What is my purpose for attending College?

Ever since I have been attending college all I hear is all my professors ask, why we are attending college? I have thought about it really well. At first I was attending college to please my parents. Then I had a baby and as she is growing and time passes by I see that economically everything is going up. In reality I know why I am attending college. I am in college to improve my economic status, be an example for my children, and to achieve my life goal of being a petroleum engineer. As I was growing up, I seen my parents struggle in paying bills. At times we would have our light cut off and be running extension wires from our neighbor home to ours in order to manage, until we had the money for the bill. I also recall asking for things and my mother saying, Sorry sweaty we don’t have enough or we can’t afford it. Now that I am a father myself, I don’t want my children to feel the burden I felt just because my parents weren’t financially stable. Don’t get me wrong I had a wonderful child hood but there were moments that I wish I could have a certain object. I just would like to provide for my children and still have a little extra in my pocket just in case of any financial instability or purpose. The second reason I am attending college is to be a great example for my children. Neither my father nor mother attended College or graduated for High school. So far I am the only one who has graduated from high school and I want to be able to graduate from college as well. When my children grow up I would like to be able to tell them, you need to graduate from both high school and college. And if they ask why? I’ll simply reply, if daddy did it, it shouldn’t be that hard for you guys to achieve it as well. If you start building the foundation to a house it will turn into a beautiful of in the end, the hard part is all…...

They have helped me succeed, and for that, I am thankful. I think it is important to be humble, and remember all of the people that helped me get to where I am, whether it's my parents, my siblings, my close friends or even God. Being thankful is being able to not focus on the hardships of life, and instead acknowledging everything in my life that has made it better. I am thankful to God and my family, and my friends, and even my teachers for helping me improve my life. Being thankful to me is appreciating everything God has given me. Why I Am Where I Am

...years of schooling I have always had the worst exsperience. I was teased all my years of elementry, middle school I was ignored, high school I was the "GEEK" who wore her mothers and sisters clothing. It seems like I have never had a break. I was never able to concentrate on school because I was just always worried about what everyone was saying about me. I was in and out of school, skipping class, hiding in bathrooms just to ignore the akward step of walking into a classroom. I never had anyone to talk to about these things, so I just kept everything inside of me. My mother "then", was not focused on us. She didnt wake us up in the mornings, she didnt get us ready for school, she wouldnt take us to school if we missed the bus. My second oldest sister did all of those things. If we missed the bus I remember having to run across the highway, and this is elementry and middle school days, to catch the bus before it went around the turn around. I never had someone forcing me to go to school or help me through my troubled years. I had to learn to coop on my own and get through things on my own. By the time I got into highschool i just didnt care anymore, I started hanging out with the wrong people doing things that I shouldnt have been doing having to switch schools countless times all eventually led me to just dropping out of high school. By this time, I was 18 and I was forced to live with my boyfriend and his family because of my mother kicking me out right when I turned 18.......

Why Am I Here

...Why am I Here? The decision to further my education was made long before I completed high school; however, at the time I did not have the resources at my disposal to achieve my life goals. In conversations I had with individuals that I surrounded myself with I realized that furthering my education should be a top priority. The decision was made to join the armed services which had a huge impact on my life. Not only did the rigors of military life provide me with the discipline that I would need to succeed, but it would eventually avail a litany of resources thereby enabling me to pursue select long and short-term goals such as purchasing property and building a home. Over the years I’ve been motivated by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and by living vicariously through family, friends, and their college experience(s). Along comes the Great Recession; a period in our history that continues to impact every hard working American and the global society. The unfortunate events leading up to the recession and the subsequent implosion of the economy, if you will, forced me to seriously ponder my future. Why now? “Why not?” would be the easiest way to answer that question, but the more obvious answer is the fulfillment of my goals. You see I never gave up on them I just chose another route. I envision a better quality of life following successful completion of my degree program that will not only affect me but family and friends. I presume that more opportunities will present......

Why I Came to College

...English Composition I February 10, 2014 When I was inspired to come back to college Returning to school for me at this point of time in my life is very important. I have quite a few things I want to accomplish in life, and one definite thing is receiving my degree in the Criminal Justice. The point in my life when I came to this conclusion, I was at work doing yet doing another double. I had just gotten paid and my check wasn’t enough to pay all my bills I had that were due. I couldn’t understand why I still fell short. I had picked up all the overtime I was allowed per pay period and it still wasn’t enough to cover all my bills. I knew it was time for a change in my life. I then enrolled in Schenectady Community College. I signed up to get my degree in Criminal Justice. My first semester went great I was so proud of myself. Second semester I changed degrees and switched to get my degree in Chemical Abuse Counseling. After taking my second semester I realized Chemical Abuse was not for me so I switched back to Criminal Justice. I’m now in my third semester and look forward to completing Criminal Justice and obtaining my degree when I’m done taking all the required classes needed. I’m aware with me switching degrees it set me back a little but I’m in no rush and know I have a long road ahead. Hopefully the courses in chemical abuse I took can count towards my criminal justice degree. I currently work for adults with disabilities. I have been at this job for twelve......

Why I Want to Join College

...279b3918-e232-4704-b1e1-4af87b06cd7c | | Why is a college education important to me?  Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Today, in the era that we live in, the role of education in our lives has become even more prominent as science and technology are rapidly developing. In fact, people's lives are dependent on education as it provides them with the necessary skills to survive and adapt to today's ever-changing world. A college education is something that I have personally wanted for a long time. None of my family members had the opportunity to go to college, simply because they could not afford it. I am blessed enough to have many years of professional work experience, but sadly without a college degree I feel that my resume is missing a vital and key element to further my career.  When I was in high school, I often questioned the importance of a college education. I felt that if I just passed my classes, I would be fine. My parents never went to college, so I never felt the pressure or need for an academic degree. I was wrong. In this economic climate, I have learned that having a college education is vital to your career. Adding a college education to my resume will benefit me throughout the rest of my life - personally, professionally and socially. It will open many doors and allow me to explore a myriad of options. Combined with my professional work experience, a college degree can......

Why I Am a Formalist

...appeals to me is like asking whether or not I want the recipe to the food I really like. Yes, the food still tastes good without knowing the details, but it makes it even more delicious when I know them, and I can understand why it tastes the way it does. The formalist approach to literary analysis gives you more insight to understanding the piece of literature as a whole. Similarly, when you eat something, such as a slice of pizza, you are eating many parts of a whole. Dough, cheese, marinara, and pepperonis are examples of these parts. Relatedly, these components of the literature could be things like historical context, author, and/or symbolism. Biting into that mouthwatering pizza would not be the same without all of those ingredients. It is better to understand where all the tastes are coming from. Knowing why the author writes the way he or she does or knowing how the setting affects the characters’ values can really make a difference in your ability to comprehend and break down all of the little details. It is these things that make reading more enjoyable, more so than just reading what is in front of me. With the reader response method, I can get much more meaning out of literature and sometimes even more meaning out of life. The formalist approach does not appeal to me because I do not just want to see something at face value. In short, the pizza would not taste the same without all of the different flavors, so why would I not find the recipe and figure out......
