Students,

I look forward to working with you.

Dr. Alan Balfour

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course requires Management majors to integrate and apply the concepts taught in Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior Analysis, Human Resources Management, and Organizational Assessment into a capstone project resulting in a written report and presentation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Utilizing internet resources, textbook research, critical thinking, and imagination, students will integrate and apply management skills by creating and operationalizing an imaginary organization. In implementing this task, students will work effectively in a team, communicate their results through written analyses, and make presentations. In short, they will perform the tasks of managers, rather than merely studying about them. In doing so, you will be required to demonstrate competence in subject matter content, critical thinking and decision making, teamwork, writing skills and presentation skills.

ABOUT THE PROFESSOR:

Dr. Alan Balfour earned a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Albion College, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School, and a master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Labor Relations from Michigan State University. He has been at USF since 1980 and served as Management Department Chair and Director of the Master of Science in Management degree program from 1996-2011. Previously, he worked as a manager in the private sector for the Procter & Gamble Company.

Requirements/Grading:

The requirements of this course are that you attend and complete the assignments for class. If you must miss a class, you will be given a makeup assignment that develops your abilities but is a lot more work than what you missed.

The final course grade will be determined as follows:

CLASS CONTRIBUTION: 33% Each team will receive a score for its contribution in each class.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: 33% Each team will submit a written case analysis of approximately 40 pages. More details on this assignment will be given out later in the semester.

FINAL PRESENTATION: 33% Each team will present its case analysis. This will be a professional, power-point presentation to the class, with each team member presenting proportionally.

An "I" grade indicates incomplete coursework and may be awarded to a student only if a small portion of the student's work is incomplete and only when the student is otherwise earning a passing grade.

Letter grades will be as follows:

94-100 = A

90-93 = A-

87-89 = B+

84-86 = B

80-83 = B-

Major

...My major is Speech pathologist. The reason I picked this major is because I have a passion for making a difference in lives of children, adults with disabilities and senior citizens, which is also what I want to do as freshman Queen. This may not seem like a position that you can make a difference in the lives of others with, but it is. I want to show my girl peers that feel like “I wasn’t good enough to run because I wasn’t pretty” that you can do it if you believe in yourself. It’s not about a certain type of look; it’s about what you have in the inside that prevails on the outside. Another reason I am running for freshmen Queen because being a leader and helping others has always been something I loved to do. In 2006 I won Junior Miss. Juneteenth. It was a great opportunity to do that because I got to meet new people, help with the community and feed the poor. Running as freshman queen I would like to see a difference on the campus such as going green, saving trees. Also as a leader of being freshman I would like to see all the violence on campus to come to a stop. I want to show my fellow peers that violence and harm to other people isn’t a way to solve a problem. Giving back to the community is also a good thing, volunteer and social work is a good thing serving as a leader. I know I will make a great candidate because I feel I have the potential to lead class 0f 2016 in the right direction....

Major Crimes

...The Major Crimes Today’s major crimes are homicide, murder, assault and rape. With these major crimes no matter what preventive measures are put into place to help reduce these crimes, it all boils down to the individuals committing the crime to weigh out the good and the bad and if the good outweighs the bad they believe a strategic plan is in order to follow thru with the crime. For this assignment I will be providing a brief description of the crimes committed, along with what does the crime data suggest about these types of crimes and discuss the motive of the crime and if not, what are possible explanations. I will also explain if there was a connection between the type of crimes and the location and what preventive strategies could have been employed to reduce these types of crime. This crime is about four African American individuals in their mid twenty’s belonging to a gang called Campbellton road gangster. Major Neurotransmitters

...Major Neurotransmitters Major Neurotransmitters While there are many, possibly more than fifty neurotransmitters already discovered by scientists, they have all been grouped into four major groups, they are acetylcholine, amino acids, monoamines, and neuropeptides. Neurotransmitters are chemicals inside the brain that communicate throughout the entire human brain and body. They relay signals between neurons, or nerve cells. Neurotransmitters are used by the brain to tell your body to do everything it does. They tell your heart to beat and your lungs to breathe. They can control your sleep, hunger and mood. It is possible to have an unbalanced or low level of certain neurotransmitters which will cause the human body to act in a vast variety of ways. There are many thing that can also effect why these neurotransmitters are not functioning correctly. Ach or acetylcholine, a biogenic amine, was discovered in 1920 by Otto Lewis during an experiment with a frog. According to The Concise Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science, “ACh diffuses across the synapse, it binds to specific postsynaptic receptors to produce either a local excitatory effect or an inhibitory effect. Whether the postsynaptic neuron passes on the message by producing an action potential depends on the sum of the influences it receives from pre-synaptic neurons” (Neurotransmitters, 2004). Dopamine, nor epinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin are also......

...Factors in Choosing a Major In the university, choosing a major is extremely important to all of the college students, especially for people who are sophomores. Nowadays for the students, there are several factors that influence student’s decision. They have to consider money, family, and interests. I think the most two important factors are parental and students. I also believe there are some advantages and some disadvantages about those factors. Parental influence is the first factor in choosing a major. The reason why parents are the most influential factor is because most children will follow their parents’ orders. For my opinion, I think it may be harmful idea to follow what your parents say. I think it all depends on the students’ personalities. For example, if a student’s goal is to become a lawyer, but this student’s parents want this student to become a doctor, then this might be a problem within this student’s family. The reason is because no matter which choice that the student chooses, this student will still need to work diligently on his choice. The disadvantage of follow parents’ orders is you might regret their decision someday in the future. For instance, if a student follows parents’ expectation to become a doctor, then when this student finds a doctor’s job, this person might feel remorse everyday due to it is not the job that this student wants. Therefore, we should all follow our goal and dream. Interest is the second factors that affect......

Because it is Statistics and Probability, we can do most of the research, but we just need more time to understand what the research’s field is and need more time to understand. At Michigan State University, we can go on to MSU undergraduate research to find some, or can directly ask a professor we feel interested to work with, and see if the professor can provide some research for us. ...honeybees internationally. The 15 billion dollar agricultural industry in the United States relies heavily on the pollination provided by honeybees and without them the system that feeds the country would collapse. It is estimated that ten million hives at the value of two hundred dollars each have been lost since 2006 due to CCD (Mahre). The extreme decrease in the honeybee population has caused many farmers to begin to import bees internationally from places such as Australia. California is responsible for 80 percent of the world’s almond supply. Almond farmers now require 1.5 billion colonies of honeybees to be brought to their farms in order to keep the 4 billion dollar industry alive (Mahre). Before the disappearance of honeybees on such a major scale began, there would have never been a need to bring in honeybees to pollinate the almonds. Among the suspected causes of CCD, the use of systemic pesticides is leading the pack. Multiple studies to determine the effect systemic pesticides have on honeybees have been conducted. One study filmed bees gathering pollen from an organic sunflower as well as from a sunflower treated with systemic pesticides. The lead researcher Maryann Frazier found, “the bees gathering pollen from the organic sunflower followed a steady and precise pattern while the bees gathering pollen from the treated sunflower were very disoriented and confused. They repeatedly tried to clean themselves to the point that they would just fall off the flower”......

The Major Threes

...I knew I have always had an indecisive nature but I did not realize it would spill over into higher education. I never thought I’d be the one to say that I have switched my major two times, but I have: from Biology to Exercise and Sports Science to Nursing. Let me explain or better yet take you down the path of my college journey of majors. Before coming to this University, I set up goals into becoming a Dermatologist. I was very adamant about it, passion was at an all time high and knew everything I was supposed to do with help of a mentor. I was enrolled my freshman year as a Biology major. As you’ve heard, medical is really competitive and expensive so undergraduate grades must be in tip-top shape. With a semester of heart retching C’s, dreaded B’s, analysis of my work ethic and distractions I realized that I probably wouldn’t be able to handle the coursework Biology had to offer, my passion and drive was no longer sufficing. I indefinitely just wanted to appreciate my major and actually love it. Going into my second year, my desired course of major was Exercise and Sports Science with a concentration in Physical Therapy. The summer of 2014, the summer before my sophomore year here at Texas State, I went through a phase where I went to the gym or worked out any chance that I got. My body was my drawing board and I was in control of how I wanted it to look, not exactly feel and I liked that feeling. My body begun the chance intensely which developed my interest in......

What are the laws or rules of that particular government? Is this a profitable market for our company? These questions are answered through identifying the three major foreign markets. Understanding the individual consumer markets, industrial markets and government markets will give a solid understanding of global business. Analysis of the major markets. The major markets within all Foreign Markets Consumer markets are products and services for the consumer. They make up about fifty percent of the gross domestic products (Gaspar, 2013). Consumer markets are divided into categories. Consumer products, food and beverages, retail such as clothing and transportation. Consumers are purchasing products and services for their individual use. They are not companies that are purchasing product to sell to people. This is important because as history has proven cultures change. Typically styles and trends tend to last a while before they move on to the newest fad. This is particularly important as the producers in consumer markets will be affected by this ever changing industry. The aesthetics and appeal to the consumer is of utmost priority in......

Major Crimes

...Major Crimes Major Crimes Jesus Hernandez Strayer Unniversity The major types of crimes listed in the UCR are violent crimes and property crimes. Violent crimes include murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. These two crimes are committed all over the united states, at random times and random places. These are the most popular crimes in the database. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The property crime category includes arson because the offense involves the destruction of property; however, arson victims may be subjected to force. Because of limited participation and varying collection procedures by local law enforcement agencies, only limited data are available for arson. Arson statistics are included in trend, clearance, and arrest tables throughout Crime in the United States, but they are not included in any estimated volume data. The arson section in this report provides more information on that offense. Violent crime suggests that violence is a behavior by persons, against persons or property that intentionally threatens, attempts, or actually inflicts physical harm. Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and......
