Problems in a Situation

...Problems in a Situation Eric Nsiah Gyabaah Solutions Leadership | B7777 UA Defining and Identifying the Problem Problem solving includes more actions such as problem definition, generation of alternatives, implementation, and evaluation. The first step in problem solving involves the discussion and documentation of individual views until everyone agrees on the nature of problem. It is essential for each group member to clearly understand the problem so that all energy will be focused in the same direction. Even the literature on problem solving (such as cognitive psychology) has traditionally emphasized the solving part of the process, and has assumed that the individual either “knows” what the problem is or is presented with the problem by some other person (Newall, et al 1958). Teams often are given ill-defined problems and underdeveloped criteria for evaluation. Teams that rush through the definition stage often waste time by returning to the initial stage. A good way to define the problem is to write down a concise statement which summarizes the problem, and then write down where you want to be after the problem has been resolved. In other to successfully define a problem by an individual or a group the following questions needed to be asked. The objective is to get as much information about the problem as possible. 1. What can you see that causes you to think there's a problem? 2. Where is it happening? 3. How is it happening? 4. When is it......

The Economic Situation

...The economic situation is fluid and dynamic. We may have a rapid recovery, which would be great, but, we might have a long, deep, and painful recession. We plan to use the Internet in the years ahead, while the book is in use, to update the situation on a chapter-by-chapter basis. As events related to the different chapters occur, we will provide updated vignettes and other information on the book' web site. We anticipate many important developments, hence a lot of updates. Still, the good news is that the basic, fundamental contents of the book will remain the s IS SHAREHOLDER WEALTH MAXIMIZATION A WORLDWIDE GOAL? Most academics agree that shareholder wealth maximization should be a firm’s primary goal, but it’s not clear that people elsewhere really know how to implement it. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), a global consulting firm, conducted a survey of 82 Singapore companies to test their understanding and implementation of shareholder value concepts. Ninety percent of the respondents said their firm’s primary goal was to enhance shareholder value, but only 44% had taken steps to achieve this goal. Moreover, almost half of the respondents who had shareholder value programs in place said they were dissatisfied with the results achieved thus far. Even so, respondents who focused on shareholder value were more likely to believe that their stock was fairly valued than those with other focuses, and 50% of those without a specific program said they wanted......

...the current situation with Clyde and Dan? Provide your rationale, including what factors you considered in making your selection. Your response should be at least 100 words. Getting both parties in the same room will eliminate the behind the back talking. Talk to David, make him leave the room and then ask for James. I would get both sides of the story. Write down everything each one stated. Come up with a solution within ten minutes. Bring both employees back into the same room and iron the situation out. Mainly there is a miscommunication between the two. The problem will be smaller than expected. Once David finds out James was unaware of the trouble being caused, the situation is lessened with no tension. This works good in a group setting. 3. Situation Ethics

...absolute love is universal, no matter the situation, while situational ethics is solely dependent on the situation. There are two extremes of situational ethics: legalism and antinomianism. Legalism is "the insistence that the predetermined laws are to be put into action when they are relevant to the situation at hand" (Wilkens, 2011, p 168). On the other hand, Antinomianism is completely situational, and no guidelines, rules, moral or ethics are involved. Love, though it seems like a simple ethic, can be viewed in a multitude of different fashions, even when being viewed ethically. Positive Side to the ethic; potential problems There are four main positive elements in regards to situational ethics and love. The first positive element is that there is always one cornerstone to build on, which is love. If a decision is made out of love, it is hard to criticize that decision. The potential problem with this element is that many Christians view this as '"anything goes"' (Wilkens, 2011, p. 171) but this is not how Fletcher views it. The second main element is that the one absolute that Fletcher builds his beliefs on is a positive one. Something done in love can rarely harm another person. He is using love (and God) to aid him in making the right and good decisions. The third element in the positive side of the ethic is the rejection of legalism. As I stated above, legalism means following a strict set of laws, no matter what the situation entails. Lying to someone about......

Maria's Situation

...Maria’s Situation Workplace discrimination is an extremely relevant issue here in the United States. According to federal officials, as per Foy (2012), “Workplace discrimination complaints based on national origin — which often involve language ability — rose by 76 percent from 1997 to 2011, when more than 11,800 complaints were lodged with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.” The scenario presented is an excellent example of what could be a true to life example of this type of issue and does indeed raise the question of whether discriminatory practices are to be considered in Maria not receiving a promotion. We learned several important factors from both sides of this issue. Maria, who has a graduate degree, has been working in the company for ten years, seven in this current position is a native-born American and is of Latin descent with a distinctive accent. Some of Maria’s coworkers state that she is loud and aggressive and Maria has had past tardiness and attendance issues which she stated were due to family reasons. The man who received the promotion is a white anglo male named Alex. He has a graduate degree but hasn’t been with the company or in his current position as long as Maria. His job evaluations are better than Maria’s and he is considered an “up and comer” in the company. Both sides of this issue could make valid arguments on whether the company’s decision could be considered discrimination or not. It seems to me the three......

Legal Situations

...000400693 Ardoin LIT1 Task 310.1.5-02, 11, 13 Situation A: This situation consists of an employee who has been employed with a company for two consecutive years. This employee’s spouse recently gave birth prematurely to a set of twins. Based on these circumstances, the employee chose request a leave of absence from work, in which he was granted. The employee remained on leave for 11 weeks, at which time he requested to return to his previous role with his employer, and in addition he also requested 11 weeks of back pay for the time that he was out on leave. The employee’s previous manager left the company during the duration of the leave, and was replaced by a new one. The new manager allowed the employee to return to his place of employment as well as maintain his previous pay rate. Given the provisions stipulated in the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA), the following will provide supporting evidence as to how the FMLA relates to the facts outlined in this particular situation. The employee was rightfully granted leave based on FMLA, which states that an employee is entitled up to 12 weeks of leave, upon the completion of one consecutive year of employment, for the birth of a child and other domestic hardships. Considering that the employee returned to work within the 12 week timeframe, and was given his previous role with comparable pay, it is fair to say that this action aligns with the provisions of the FMLA. On the subject of back pay for the 11 weeks......

Abusive Situations

...There is no clear reason for abuse, but it’s suggested that there are certain factors related to abuse, and that the existence of more than one of these factors place a person at high risk of abuse. There are many factors which can lead to an abusive situation; this could be disabilities or mental health problems, the environment, family conflict. Many groups of people are more vulnerable and at risk of abuse than others. This could be a person with a learning disability or a physical disability and/or someone who suffers with mental health problems. Other people also at risk of abuse are older individuals that may suffer from dementia. Older individual’s or individuals who suffer from mental illnesses or have disabilities tend to be over compliant and accepting to whatever happens to them in the care of others. This can be because they have difficulty communicating and with their interaction; and do not understand the differences between right and wrong – some adults with autism may experience this. This can lead to individuals taking advantage of them, and manipulating the vulnerable adult into thinking that this situation is normal, so they are not aware that abuse and exploitation is taking place. Vulnerable adults who suffer from communication difficulties are often incapable of communicating to someone that they are being abused. . Adults that suffer from dementia can also be abused. This can happen, as it is not unusual for individuals who are suffering from dementia......

Situation Ethics

...Situation Ethics General Principles: 1. Middle Way between Legalism and Antinomianism (e.g. Enron - if it had loving intentions then it would have been OK). Only break law if most loving outcome in given situation; teleological (e.g. Hiroshama/Nagasaki justified because ends war?) "it relativises the absolute, it does not absolutise the relative" 2. Conscience; what it is and what it is not (e.g. Nike - love = non-preferencial therefore should treat workers well - factory in Indonesia 177x legal toxic fume limit). [ NOT: 1. intuition/inner-feeling, 2. "guidance by the holy spirit" external decision maker, 3. "internalised value system of the culture and society", 4. "reason making moral judgements" (Aquinas). ] WHAT IT IS: function, not a faculty - something you do, rather than have, verb not a noun, there is no "conscience", just a word for "our attempts to make decisions" (e.g. Huckleberry Finn decides to befriend slave, Jim). "Antecedant rather than consequent conscience" - prospective, not retrospective (no guilt/regret/hindsight etc) 3. The idea of situation (e.g. Fletcher's lifeboat - captain orders sailors to jump overboard to save women & children). "Unique and concrete moment in which the decision is required" - every situation is unique/relative (e.g. Ford Pinto case - cost benefit analysis) 4. Making decisions rather than following rules - teleological, not deontological. "A-rational, not irrational" Don't just blindly follow rules, use conscience......

Situation Analysis

...Case Study: Mountain Man Brewing Company Situation/Background Analysis: Mountain Man Brewing Company (MMBC), located at West Virginia State, was a family-owned beer company, which possessed respectable market shares in the Central East beer region of the United State. Thanks to the unique bitter flavor and the high quality of its only product -- Mountain Man Lager, which was selected as the “Best Beer in West Virginia” and “America’s Championship Lager” recently, the small company gained a national well-known reputation and therefore was able to survive in the fierce competition of the U.S beer market. In addition, the core customers of MMBC, baby boomers, blue-collar, middle-to-lower income and mid-aged men, still shared their ultimate loyalty to the brand and formed a stable, large portion of annually profits to the company. In spite of all the strengths above, in 2005, the company encountered the first decline on products sale during its 80-years history. Based on market researches, the company believed that this decline was induced mainly by two reasons: 1. Over the past 6 years, the traditional premium beer segment to which MMBC belongs had shrunk, due to the growing light beer segment. 2. Mountain Man Lager, as MMBC’s core product, is not popular among younger drinkers who constitute the vital consumer segment for beer companies. Such a decline became a clear alarm to the MMBC management team after the company had seen so many other regional breweries disappear in......

Situation Ethics

...Situation Ethics is a teleological theory, which evaluates certain acts in light of their situational context. It is not a universal law, but it is the law of agape. The ethical theory is based on the main Christian duty to, ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’; therefore, love is the prerogative as it’s the only aspect that is intrinsically good. Many debates have been developed around the argument whether ‘Situation Ethics is always practical’. According to Joseph Fletcher, ‘Situation Ethics is always practical’. The philosopher developed the teleological theory of Situation Ethics according to the teachings of Jesus Christ, a being who lived his life according to how God demands mankind to live. Within The New Testament, Jesus implies that we do not have to follow a set of rules and laws, especially when love is demanded. This can be seen within the example Jesus set, when The Son of God defended his friends for working on the Sabbath day. The New Testament highlights, Jesus taught his followers that all Christian actions and decisions should be seen in the light of love. Therefore, this supports Fletcher’s claim that ‘Situation Ethics is always practical’, as he developed a series of rule breaking principles according to Jesus’ teachings, which would bring about the most loving outcome, and serves the majority according to those in loves need. An example of this is Fletcher’s principle that, ‘only one thing is intrinsically good; namely love – nothing else’. This......

Conflict Situations

...CONFLICT SITUATIONS Arguments and conflicts are rarely pleasant. When they take place at work, they disrupt efficiency and poison interpersonal relationships. At home, they add stress and tension to everyday life, and can lead to further dysfunction if they aren't settled amiably. Resolving conflicts agreeably is an invaluable life skill, and can reap immeasurable benefits both in family life and in a professional environment. The key is to approach the conflict with basic psychology and a RESPECT for both sides. WORKPLACE CONFLICT Dispute Resolution 1. CALMNESS The first step to resolving conflict is to stay calm and approach the subject rationally. Undue emotion obscures the issue and exacerbates argumentative tendencies. Stay calm, speak objectively and apply rationality to the situation. Identify the SOURCE of the conflict rather than responding to the surrounding anger. Once the issue is clarified and the terms are known, it becomes easier to resolve it. 2. RESPECT Going hand in hand with calmness is a willingness to acknowledge and respect the other person's point of view. This is not the same thing as simply surrendering to him or her, or allowing your own arguments to be shunted aside. Rather, it means verbally recognizing where the other person is coming from and accepting his or her emotional state. Allow him or her a certain amount of venting, if necessary (so long as it remains "blowing off steam" and not deliberate hurtfulness), then express your point of......
