These Things I’ve Learned….

If you really stop to watch….stop to listen and take in the moment, you realize how fast the world is moving around you. You also realize that you have missed a million moments by (personally) moving--just as fast as that world. As cliché as it may sound, I blinked and I was 18 years old, I blinked and I was 30, and I blinked and now I am 50. That is how fast it feels. I swear my children were just born….but suddenly, they are adults. It feels like just yesterday that I was a young woman able to raise a child, work full time and take a night class all at once with ease, and now I’m a grandma with a good few aches and pains, looking at retirement plans. Very rarely do we think about our life’s purpose or reflect on the big picture when we are growing up or even when we are in our 20’s or 30’s. I’m sure it happens at different ages for different people…maybe some never do, I don’t know. I believe I started “getting it” when I was in my 40’s. By this…I mean that I truly realized what was important in life and what not to sweat about. Losing family members had a lot to do with it. It was hard enough when I lost Grandma and Grandma ...parents are security blankets that are very, very hard to lose. But when Uncle Bob died…I felt a major change in my soul. It was as if I’d been on a spinning top my whole life and then it just stopped. Everything was suddenly right there in front of me to deal with…think about, from my childhood to the present. It was as if I was seeing things with new eyes…and it wasn’t a bad experience at all. Looking back, I knew that I had made mistakes, but also that I had done the best I could with what I knew at the time and with the resources that I had. I was proud that I had learned to be a kind, caring person with a great sense of humor who, still to this day, sees the good in all…...

...Wisconsin in 1886. Hoy was a smart, fast and alert ballplayer who put together arguably "the greatest career of any seriously handicapped player" (Shatzkin and Charlton, 494). Hoy began his major league career in 1888 with Washington of the National League. A left-handed batter and right-handed thrower, he played with Buffalo, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Louisville. When Hoy joined the Washington ballclub, he posted a statement on the clubhouse wall: "Being totally deaf as you know and some of my teammates being unacquainted with my play, I think it is timely to bring about an understanding between myself, the left fielder, the shortstop and the second baseman and the right fielder. The main point is to avoid possible collisions with any of these four who surround me when in the field going for a fly ball. Whenever I take a fly ball I always yell I'll take it--the same as I have been doing for many seasons, and of course the other fielders let me take it. Whenever you don't hear me yell, it is understood I am not after the ball, and they govern themselves accordingly." Hoy's yell was actually a squeak. Hoy was with Buffalo in the Players League in 1890, with the St. Louis team of the American Association in 1891, then back with Washington in the National League in 1892 and 1893. He moved on to Cincinnati of the National League in 1894, where he stayed until going to Louisville of the National League in 1898 and 1899. He then played for Chicago of the American League in 1900......

...a better writer. When it came to English I was one of the people who hated it, because I knew writing was involved. With the help of a challenging assignments, Lexicon quizzes, and a guiding professor I can finally say I’m on the right track to a brighter future. I’m the type of person who loves to be challenged, and with the assignments given in this semester class I feel like I can accomplish any hard task thrown at me. I remember when I first entered the class my mood was very lethargic, because it was my second time in English A. I thought if I didn’t get it the first time what makes people think I’m going to be able to the second time around. As I think back, I remember the first paper issued was a reading on Abraham Lincoln. We had to read what I thought was a boring passage, so the class had already lost me there, then we had to write something about and that was another “oh no” for me. As I was writing the paper I grew more and more chuffed about it. You may not believe but I finally finished the paper, I wasn’t too confident about it but I was thinking “hey, at least it’s something to turn in.” However the day it was due I wasn’t allowed to turn it in do to tardiness, then all I could think was “welcome to college English A.” Now the nest project was due, which was the annotated bibliography. By this time around I started growing confidence because it was something new and was way different from my last English A class so I thought to give it a chance. The......

It was 20th of December I still remember the day .the warm wind brushing through my cheeks, the engine roaring, booming music from my stereo of our car, the bursts laughter and gossips from some of the best people in my life. This Much I Know

...This Much I Know “Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom.” ― Gabriel Garcí¬a Márquez. One day I got up and as a mechanical act I went to the bathroom to wash my face, I saw myself in the mirror and… WHAAAT?! What’s that hair buried in the front of my head? Hidden among the others! It looks different, it looks… WHITE!! It feels frustrating. I’m too young to be old already! I started searching with close attention at every corner of my head and I discovered that the rebellious hair was not alone, he had made some friends of his kind, and to make things worse… on my face I also had crow’s feet!! Those wrinkles my mother has!! Let’s face it, I’m only 25, couldn’t those elderly symptoms appear later on? It’s hard to see in the mirror an image you don’t feel identified with, I think I’m still 18 years old, in fact I still do the things I did when I was that age, but with new residents in my head and face which show that time has passed for me too, that I’m not that teenager I once was, that every candle I blow on each of my birthdays marks an year more in my life, marks the flow life is, which never gets rest. However, I still think that every hour, every minute and every second that we go through is an instance of learning. Time helps us not only grow up physically, but also mentally and spiritually. Those wrinkles and white hairs only show that we have experienced more things than younger......

... Mama Johnson is first presented immediately as someone who can be trusted through her knowledge of things presented to her firstly by describing her misfortunate youngest daughter Maggie by saying “She is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passed her by,” as well as stating she “was never a good singer” and “never could carry a tune” (Alice 163). These blunt observations helps the reader trust what Mama Johnson says because they are things personally significant to her and personal within her life and about her family. She does not sugar coat the truth or try to mask what is in front of her because she has no reason to hide what is her heritage because it is the life she lives everyday. When Dee finally arrives she instantly begins taking snap shots of her former home. She pushes to preserve the heritage she left behind by taking these captured shots of a heritage fading away and by literally taking it back with her which is the case with the dasher and quilts. Dee eagerly attempts to take back with her things of past lineage stating “This churn is what I need” and wanting “the dasher too” (Walker 165). She does the same with the quilts “saying sweet as a bird 'Can I have these old quilts?'” in her hopeful delight of trying to preserve these relics that Mama Johnson and Maggie use for everyday use (Walker 165). However, Mama Johnson still reveres these things as something that should be put to use instead of put up for display by not allowing Dee to get......

... 3/10/12 The Reflexive Speech Today I stand here to talk to you about Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream Speech. Dr. King's was very surreal, was something that had to be said in the sake of all the black people suffering from racial segregation. The white  people should stop treating the black people as if they were something different as if they weren't human because treating black people equally will help us americans become greater people, people that God can admire. I say this, because I myself James Swerg and all the other Freedom Riders have been through many tough times where we will be attacked by men armed with bricks, clubs and knives. Also one time in Anniston Alabama, when we where going on one of the freedom rides we will be divided in two buses, the white people attacked us leading to many injuries and  one of the buses was burned and all the white people held the doors shut so we couldn't get out of the bus and get burned to death, why luckily that didn't happen. That's why I'm here today, to further explain to you why this must stop, because as Dr. King said "now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood". That's what we are suppose to be a brotherhood because I ask this to myself,  do all this people really enjoy killing so many innocent people just because of their color? cause I don't think that's what God  will do in this situation, he will just see......

...book. Granted, Marlowe is our point of entry into the film, and by "confining our range of knowledge to Marlowe's, the film can create curiosity and surprise," (Bordwell and Thompson 102). Just as in the novel, our knowledge of the crimes committed during the narrative is limited to what Marlowe knows. However, even though we are restricted to Marlowe's knowledge and know what we know only through him, "we very seldom see or hear things from Marlowe's perceptual vantage point, and we never get direct access to his mind," (Bordwell and Thompson 105). This is not to say that we do have direct access to Marlowe's mind in the novel of The Big Sleep. Although we never explicitly receive his thoughts on certain matters, we can see into his mind through his actions, reactions and, of course, his rich sense of humor. The novel creates an implicit access to Marlowe that the film simply cannot give us. Rather than relying on Marlowe for interpretation, then, we rely on the conventions associated with film noir. Even if a viewer is not familiar with the term, the genre has become so present, pervasive and parodied in American cinema that almost anyone knows the rules of the game: the sidewalk is always wet and glistening (even if it's not raining), a lone saxophone always wails plaintively just out of sight, and you never trust a character who is followed by two guys who he refers to solely as his "men." The fact that The Big Sleep is a very......

...life skill, but the fact is I obviously don’t and neither does anybody else. I’m here to write about what I do know, such as what I do at work, know when to shut my mouth, historical events, and etcetera. I’m not big on psychology in a broad range, but I do enjoy abnormal psychology and learning about anti-social behavioral people that make-up society. I started working at an airport after I graduated high school back in May of 2015. My job seems pretty simple in what I am told to do, but the work is a pain in the ass. I clean planes for a bunch of rich bastards that do nothing it seems except fly planes and go to swinger clubs. I also mow the airport mainly in the summer and not so much in the winter. Mowing is my favorite part because I can go do my own thing and not listen to dumbass Bill (who just got fired recently, Thank God) rant about how Fox News is what kids need to watch to learn something. I’m not a liberal, but I hate Fox News by the way. All Fox News does is rant about something non-stop and repeat the same thing over and over. Well anyways, the job pays the bills and that is what matters. School is very important as you may know, but at the same time homework sucks. My favorite area of learning is about history. Partly due to the fact I can easily memorize historical events. Another area of what I know but strongly dislike is math. Math is one of those things that I’m good at and hate, but do it anyway because I know how. I know that abnormal psychology......

...nurse’s commands. Ratched convinces the patients by saying, “I tell you this hoping you will understand that it is entirely for your own good that we enforce discipline and order” (Kesey 171). There were a few notable experiments that occurred during the 1950s American society. One of them was the syphilis treatment experiment. Black men were recruited to test a new treatment for syphilis. But they only treated a portion of the participants, and didn't tell the others that they would go untreated. Those untreated thought that they were receiving treatment. The hospital staff basically treated black people like lab rats. Although people had been told the treatment was good for them, no one would know if it was the truth. Same as the asylum in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, everyone in the mental institution has to listen to the nurse and take the medicine every day, but no one knows what they are taking and if it is good for their health. When nurse Ratched asks the patients to share their stories, she thinks this is one of the therapies for her patients. However, she does not care whether the patients are satisfied with this treatment; she does not give the patients the choice. When Ratched asks the patient to spill their secrets, they are afraid to go against her even though they need to tell their secrets: “They were all shouting to outdo one another, going further and further, no way of stopping, telling things that wouldn't ever let them look one another in the eye......

...Sophocles' Oedipus is a perfect fit to Aristotle's Ideal Tragic Hero. Oedipus follows all of the rules, with a hamartia, an anagnorisis, and a peripeteia. The audience is introduced to the hamartia, or tragic flaw, of Oedipus early in the play. Oedipus believes he can dodge the oracle given to him at Delphi that he will kill his father and marry his mother. By leaving the city of Corinth and heading to Thebes, Oedipus thinks that he can outsmart the will that the gods have for him. However, the audience knows that one cannot run away from an oracle. The oracle will come true no matter what is done. Therefore, the hamartia of Oedipus is his belief that he can evade his oracle. Oedipus' anagnorisis, recognition, later comes when he is told that it was he who killed the former King Lauis and that he is, in fact, now married to his own mother. The city of Thebes had been searching for King Lauis' murderer in order to drive him out of Thebes to save the city from the plague. With this anagnorisis Oedipus is finally led to his peripeteia, or downfall. First of all, Oedipus is put to shame in front of his entire city because of his incestuous act of marrying his mother. But, more importantly, he realizes that he had not successfully avoided the oracle. In order to try to save himself he blinds himself. If he is not able to see the truth with his own eyes, he should not be able to enjoy the gift of sight. http://personal.monm.edu/ysample/aristotle.htm Oedipus follows ten of the......

Me as I Know Her

...Me As I Know Her When I think of my life as a child and now as a parent. My views on life have changed to think of how to become a better person and parent. I will briefly discuss some of my life experiences that shaped me into the person that I am. I will also analyze some of the theories that apply to psychological development and how some of these theories pertain to my life. I grew up in a single-family home with my mother finishing school and taking care of my older sister, older brother, my baby sisters and I. A man who was absent from my life, that was my father I did not know. My parents got divorced when I was just an infant. I feel this is where my trust issues come from. I also believe what Erik Erikson theories “in stage one, infants must learn to trust their parents”(Witt & Mosser, 2010, 2.3) which teaches a child to trust others easily. I spent majority of my time with my grandparents who I looked up to. I took my papa as my father because that is all I knew as a child so the few times my father did call I just felt that this was a just a man with the title my daddy. On television I had seen that parents were together like on the Cosby Show and Leave It to Beaver so I did not understand why my mom and dad were not together. A thirty-minute drive away is a place called the International Drive; this is where I stay during my time in Florida. Orlando's 14.5 mile long International Drive is a place I know only to well. Having been fortunate enough to stay on the International Drive several times I am aware of all of the great things it has to offer.
