The Last Breath Twisting the doorknob on the mahogany door towering over me, I listen attentively for the familiar woofs of Pongpong. I remember when my mom asked me what I wanted to name my dog. I was imitating the sounds of firecrackers, and my mom thought I said Pongpong while I was actually shouting: “boom, boom!” That’s how my dog’s name came to be. After pushing the door open, I steady myself before Pongpong pounces on me with all his strength. Being a lot taller anda stronger than me, Pongpong pushes me to the floor and I wince at the pain. I playfully nudge him off of me and follow him inside. I run my tiny fingers through his fur, which feels like combing through a million silk threads. Pongpong may be a little frightening in my six-year-old mind, but he became a big part of my life and I know I wouldn’t be able to live without him.

I didn’t know if it was the fluorescent lamp on my desk that was causing the pounding in my head or the words that I just heard. They replay over in my head, like a song I really don’t want to hear anymore.
“It’s Pongpong. He’s sick. His lung problems are causing him to bleed. He’s at the hospital, and the doctors say he won’t live much longer.” My sister’s rushed whisper repeated in my head again. I regret not giving Pongpong all of my love and staying by him for his entire life. I regret the days and moments lost because we gave him away. He was given to my sister’s friend when my mom started having serious allergies. Pongpong was tossed around from a friend’s house to a factory to a pet shop. And I regret every decision now that his life is slowly slipping away.
The smell of rubbing alcohol that every hospital possesses immediately entered my nose as we walked into the tall building labeled “宠物医院”, but I couldn’t think of anything else other than Pongpong. Pongpong, the one who never forgot to greet me when I came home from school. Pongpong, the one I said goodnight to right before I fell asleep. Pongpong, the one who sat with me patiently, listening as I made up immature stories. Pongpong, the one who sometimes liked to mischievously chase his own tail just to make me laugh. After pulling myself up the stairs, I walked into a room full of metal cages, which looked about as comfortable as jail cells. I had to hold back my tears when I saw Pongpong, sitting up with all his might, in the biggest metal cage. A pool of blood was sitting right next to him. I saw his eyes light up in familiarity when he saw us and it was almost like he has been waiting for us to come so we could say our last goodbyes. I couldn’t comprehend that my childhood friend was grasping onto his last moments because his eyes were still filled with life- they were trying to tell me a million stories I might never hear. Immediately, I rushed to Pongpong’s side, desperate to make up for the lost time.
“What happened, Pongpong? No matter what you will always be my best friend. Always! I will remember you! You’re a good dog.” I frantically talked to him in the childish voice I always used when he was young. I held on to Pongpong’s hand, providing some comfort to the anguish he was going through.
After spending half an hour with Pongpong, the blood that he coughed up started to increase. Both unexpectedly and expectedly, he became too weak to even sit. Falling to his side, Pongpong still attempted to muster up a last small smile in his eyes. I never noticed until then, but his eyes were truly wonderful, like they could see right through you. His eyes spoke words that we would never understand, but words that gave us a slight idea of his thoughts. And now, his eyes flutter, and then they close, not rapidly, but gradually, like dimming lights. My mom’s cries filled up my ears, but I settled for silence, because I couldn’t put my feelings into words. I felt guilty, because I couldn’t seem to squeeze out any tears. But I guess that all the words have been spoken, tears shed, and my childhood friend has left me.…...

Breath Tests

...Random Breath Tests for Drivers is a Smart Thing to do As a six year old little girl I was faced with what I thought was the worst news of my life. In April 1989, my father was hit head on by a drunk driver and was killed instantly. Almost twenty years later and this horrific memory still plays over and over in my head. If random breathalyzers were performed more often by police officers then maybe my father would still be alive today. I believe random breathalyzers for drivers is a smart thing to perform on a daily basis around the world because they will keep intoxicated drivers off the road and keep our roads and highways safe. Far too many people drink near the legal limit not realizing that they may innocently go over the limit. It’s not uncommon for us to be out on a Saturday night with a group of our close friends, have a few drinks and drive home. Sometimes it’s difficult to gage ones alcohol intake and is easier to assume that we are okay to drive. The legal limit in most states is 0.8%. If a person is driving while above the legal limit they are arrested and charged with drinking and driving more commonly referred to as a DUI or DWI. Driving under the influence of alcohol can be seriously harmful to themselves and innocent bystanders such as my father. Alcohol blurs our judgment and decreases our reaction time which can be crucial while operating a motorized vehicle. Driving while under the influence is illegal and those that violate that law......

The Last Leaf

...The Last Leaf Many artists lived in the Greenwich Village area of New York. Two young women named Sue and Johnsy shared a studio apartment at the top of a three-story building. Johnsy's real name was Joanna. In November, a cold, unseen stranger came to visit the city. This disease, pneumonia, killed many people. Johnsy lay on her bed, hardly moving. She looked through the small window. She could see the side of the brick house next to her building. One morning, a doctor examined Johnsy and took her temperature. Then he spoke with Sue in another room. "She has one chance in -- let us say ten," he said. "And that chance is for her to want to live. Your friend has made up her mind that she is not going to get well. Has she anything on her mind?" "She -- she wanted to paint the Bay of Naples in Italy some day," said Sue. "Paint?" said the doctor. "Bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking twice -- a man for example?" "A man?" said Sue. "Is a man worth -- but, no, doctor; there is nothing of the kind." "I will do all that science can do," said the doctor. "But whenever my patient begins to count the carriages at her funeral, I take away fifty percent from the curative power of medicines." After the doctor had gone, Sue went into the workroom and cried. Then she went to Johnsy's room with her drawing board, whistling ragtime. Johnsy lay with her face toward the window. Sue stopped whistling, thinking she was asleep. She began making a pen and ink drawing for a......

Breath

...Can't Breath Most of you may not think of asthma as a killer disease, yet more that 5,000 Americans die of asthma each year. “According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute web page, asthma also accounts for more that 400,000 hospital discharges annually” (What is Asthma?, 8/24) . As the number of people with asthma increases, the more likely you are to meet a person who has the disease. I have a close and personal relationship with asthma. My ex wife three sons have asthma and they deal with the disease everyday each case a little different. Today, I will discuss some interesting facts about asthma; I will specifically focus on what are asthma, warning signs, symptoms, causes, and the treatments that are used. What is Asthma? Asthma is best described by its technical name: Reversible Obstructive Airway Disease (ROAD). In other words, asthma is a condition in which the airways of the lungs become either narrowed or blocked. The results are usually temporary but they cause shortness of breath, breathing trouble, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. To know what it really feels like to have asthma, I would like everyone to pick up the straw and put it in his or her mouth as if they were using it to drink something. Then, pinch your nose. Try breathing for twenty seconds. A real attack can last up to more than ten minutes and you are only doing it for twenty seconds. Juice, the youngest child, chest would rise so big because he could......

Thankful Breath

...Thankful Breath Through this story, the author portrays what everyone goes through in life; life is like a hail of arrows (impact of the giant diving bell) that you continuously maneuver through with an open mind (mind takes flight like a butterfly). This story is about a person going through “locked-in syndrome” which is paralysis from head to toe after resuscitation from a brain stem accident and despite all of that, they are still able to see the brighter side in life. Day in and day out, people look for the easiest possible way out. Choosing wants over needs, a person’s poverty becomes another person’s luxury. On the eight of December, “I was brutally introduced to the importance of the brain stem when a cerebrovascular accident took my brain stem out of action.” You are able to survive, but you survive with a symptom known as “locked-in syndrome”. The inability to move, your own mind imprisoned within yourself, doesn’t that sound familiar? The feeling of paranoia and anxiety seeping through your heart with every beat as your life takes a wrong turn. Your feelings constricted, the exact way your soul is when deciding to listen your heart or your head. There are times when listening to your head will suffice when compared to what’s being said in your heart. Persistence comes to mind; your “diving bell becomes less oppressive, and your mind takes flight like a butterfly.” You are what you eat; the same mentality is embedded in life. You are what you experience and......

The Last

...Benjamin Lucas COMM240 – Interpersonal Paper The Last I recall a brightly lit room on a Sunday morning, as I kissed her on the forehead, “I love you…” Slowly she opened her eyes and as she sat next to me, “Hey… Um… How many were there before me?” she asked. “Like, how many girls did you love before me?” “Love? Five…” I stated. “I loved five women before you.” The disappointment in her eyes after a sigh, though she smiled… “What are their names?” “…Who, What, When, Where, Why…” I said to her. “Can you tell me about them?” “Who I loved, was a girl from college. I wasn’t exactly close to her, but with some superficial facts and a few interactions over a semester, you know, like most guys fantasizing over girls they barely know, I filled in the blanks like a fairytale author. And who she became in my head was probably more than the reality. She was a third year, sorority girl, and yeah, I was an infatuated freshman, sure, but the several times you get to spend together outside of class… It really allowed me to see, she also had a good heart and a bright spirit. The only problem was, so did just about every other guy. And while she turned me down nicely, I swear… There were times when it seemed like the cliché sorority girl may have felt something for the typical awkward freshman.” “What I loved, was an old friend, but she was more than just a friend. We met early in college and kept in touch through the years. We saw each other grow, and change...

Last Breath of Innocence

...Joseph Atchley Mrs. B Jones English 102 9/21/15 Last Breath of Innocence Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury Othello is a respected Venetian general who is manipulated by his subordinate Iago into believing that his newlywed wife Desdemona was unfaithful to him. Iago then aides him in plotting the execution of his wife and her supposed lover Cassio, whom are both innocent. In their plan Iago is tasked with dispatching Cassio, while Othello takes the responsibility of extinguishing Desdemona’s light. Leading up to the night of the murder I will show examples of the premeditated, intentional, and deliberate actions on the part of Othello. Although he is manipulated in the belief that Cassio and his wife are having an affair, it is ultimately his decision to have them both killed for their alleged crimes. Othello is guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt for the first degree murder of his innocent wife Desdemona. While concealed Othello observes Iago elicit a pseudo guilty confession from Cassio, then shortly after, Bianca (Cassio’s actual lover) enters the room and questions Cassio about the strawberry laden handkerchief (the gift from Othello to Desdemona). This evidence convinces Othello of his wife’s adultery. Armed with this skewed evidence Othello becomes enraged and responds to Iago saying, “Aye, Let her rot, and perish, and be damned tonight, for she shall not live...” (4.1.169-70). Othello later adds, “I will chop her into messes…” (4.1.183). He then demands of Iago,......

Last Chance

...Carrying my bags and lunch along with scars of disappointment and defeat this event center had brought before. Meeting the participant door for the last time couldn’t have been any sweeter. Confidence at an all-time high an essential to the job that was to be done on this day, forty wins and only one loss on the season, there was no other option but for the losses to remain that way. Memories of one who past, of the scars that led me to be here one last time an uncrowned champion, and of all the ones who brought me here. It was the last weigh-in of my life and I couldn’t have been any happier about it, all those winters married to the scale would end on this day. Herded like sheep up the freezing stair well into the meat market of the top of the event center, stripping yourself down to your nothings, holding all your clothes in hand, and standing there among all your opponents as the Nazi of a guy comes down to check hair and fingernails. 147.4, six tenths under the limit, beautiful, now it was time for one of the best parts of every tournament, eating after weigh-in. It was then time to warm up, coach always made sure that we were to be one of the first teams to be down on the mats warming up. Looking around the stadium seeing all the empty seats and clumps of kids in their team colors all eating away after their last weigh-in of the season or of their life. As I tied up my shoes I made sure my lucky state penny was still in my lace cover. I had found it the......

Managemenht of Thougt, Breath and Time

...Management of Thought, Breath and Time Today, we are standing at such a juncture where many of us are busy managing or mending external resources or people, but hardly think it is necessary to manage our own important never ending resources like our thoughts, breath & time! Let’s start with THOUGHTS – the thing which all of us have in plenty but most of us never give a THOUGHT on managing our THOUGHTS! Faster than sound or light our mind can travel at great speed to any corner of the universe without us moving an inch! Our own thoughts give us happiness or sadness, without the need for any stimulus. We often wander in to the past or future without appreciating the present, causing misery. This misery is the result of our mind not seeing the beauty in front of us but instead, wandering in imagination and seeing things that are not in front of us. So why should we manage our thoughts? The mind is constantly engaged in the waking state and even in the dreaming state. As such, it has no rest at all. Naturally, a restless mind is the cause for blood pressure. A mind that is constantly engaged is responsible for diabetes. Too much worry and too much anxiety are the causes of cardiac complaints and heart diseases.. The mind expresses its pain through the body by the way of ailments or diseases which are nothing but expressions of a restless and agitated mind. Most of the hospitals are very, very busy because of the over active mind of the individuals How can we manage......

Deep Breath Meditation

...A 5 Minute Morning Meditation to Lift Your Spirits and Put a Smile On Your Face "Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony." - Mahatma Gandhi Set your alarm five minutes earlier tomorrow. When you get up, find a quiet place to sit and gaze out a window. Look up at the sky. Really notice the color and expanse. Follow the shape and movement of the clouds. Let your thoughts drift as you enjoy the morning stillness. This is your time to focus on what is good in your life - not the worries of yesterday, today or tomorrow. Begin your meditation by focusing on your breathing. The rhythmic rise and fall of your breath. Since breathing has a strong effect on emotional change, it is a natural bridge to begin to meditate. Slow measured breathing has a calming effect. Gently close your eyes and tune into your body. A word will come to you that describes what you are feeling. Calm, relaxed, peaceful, happy, confident. That is your relaxation keyword. Spread the word throughout your body. From the top of your head to the tip of your toes. Put your relaxation key word in a phrase that inspires you to handle stress differently today. For example, "I am calm and relaxed" when you are feeling tense and anxious. Use this phrase whenever you need it throughout the day. *Inhale slowly and mentally repeat, "I live with a happy heart, a peaceful mind and a playful spirit". Stay with it for a minute or two. Inhale deeply and in the privacy of your own mind...

...Listerine: The Answer to Bad Breath DeVry University   Have you ever worried about your breath? In certain circumstances your breath can play a role in whether you get a job, go on a date, or make the sale. It is a representation of your personal hygiene to most people. If you’ve been asked to light candles by blowing at them you know you have an issue. Then there is the health concerns that bad breath could be a sign of another issue like gum disease or gingivitis. Listerine may be the answer to your concerns. The 1971 Listerine ad, “I hate it, but I love it,” can be assessed using reason, reputation, and emotion. Let’s start by looking at the reason for buying Listerine. This 1971 Listerine ad utilizes an “if… then” format that is very effective. The text in the ad states, “I figure that anything that tastes this bad has got to work”. The taste of the original Listerine is basically a trademark for the product for many years at this point. So if the Listerine tastes this bad, it then has to work. Also, the text includes some data which states that, “It even kills germs that can cause bad breath”. This is direct communication of some facts about the product. Beyond the very highlighted, “I hate it, but I love it”, the “kills germs that can cause bad breath” is an excellent cache phrase that has been marketed for years. The ad is utilizing logos with these ad phrases to expound on the logic for buying Listerine. The above reasoning supports an......
