The Easy Way Out

Set in Rome, before the founding of the Roman Republic, The Rape of Lucrece is Shakespeare’s narrative poem about the rape and resulting suicide of the title character. Dazzled by her beauty and virtue and his overwhelming desire to "own" her, Tarquin sneaks into Lucrece's bedroom and does the unthinkable. In an attempt to silence her after the act, he threatens not only to take her life her but claims that he will kill a slave and place him next to her thus proclaiming to the world that they were engaged in a sexual relationship and thereby destroying Lucrece's honor. Tarquin places Lucrece in, what seems to her, an impossible situation. Though Lucrece begs Tarquin to come to his senses and consider his own honor, he gags her with her nightgown and carries out the rape. Afterwards, Lucrece writes to her husband and father to come home quickly and when they do, recounts the atrocity and then stabs herself. Collatinus and Lucretius, then declare Lucrece’s tragedy to the people of Rome, which in turn leads to the downfall of the Tarquin regime and the rise of the Roman Republic. The true tragedy in the story of Lucrece is not the rape itself but the fact that Lucrece feels that suicide is the only option she has as a result. After raping Lucrece, Tarquin expresses a 'blame the victim' mentality. “Thus he replies: ‘The color in thy face, / That even for anger makes the lily pale, / And the red rose blush at her own disgrace, / Shall plead for me and tell my loving tale. / Under that color am I come to scale/ Thy never-conquered fort; the fault is thine, / For those eyes betray thee unto mine” (476-482). In other words, Tarquin blames Lucrece's beauty for the attack he has carried out and sees himself as a victim of Lucrece's sensuality. Lucrece as well, placed some of the blame on herself, reiterating Tarquin’s earlier claim that her “beauty has ensnared” her: “My bloody judge forbade my tongue to speak; / No rightful plea might plead for justice./ His scarlet lust came evidence to swear/ That my poor beauty had purloined his eyes;/ And when the judge is robbed the prisoner dies” (1648-1652). She also seems self-aware that her ignorance about the 'true nature' of men's sexual desires made her vulnerable to the attack and whereas it might be logical to blame her father and husband for keeping her in the dark on these matters, she does not. It is disturbing that Lucrece actually sees herself as contaminated by her rape. After Tarquin leaves, Lucrece constantly refers to her own “foul-defiled” (1080) or “stained blood" (1232), that somehow her own body shares in the sin that Tarquin has committed. Lucrece feels stained and although she did not intend or cause the act to happen, she feels guilty and responsible. When she finds herself victimized, the idea of pregnancy being a result suddenly comes to her mind and terrifies her. She comes to the conclusion that taking her life will somehow erase the sins she feels she is guilty of because she was incapable of preventing the attack. During the fourth century some believed that a women should commit suicide rather than summit to rape because her virtue was destroyed by the act. If she could not kill herself before the crime than she should kill herself afterwards rather than live as a dishonored woman. Lucrece’s motives for suicide are presented in the context of the Roman concept of honor and it is the fear of dishonor and shame that seems to motivate her to act as she did, "My honour I’ll bequeath unto the knife/ That wounds my body so dishonoured./ ’Tis honour to deprive dishonour’d life;/ The one will live, the other being dead. (1184-1187). It has been argued that if Lucrece was so chaste and pure, she should have either defended herself to the death or killed Tarquin, and that her suicide after the rape does not absolve her of any implied complicity. However, Shakespeare presents her as having had no other option but to surrender when Tarquin threatened that her attempts to resist would only lead to a further debasement of her image and her family's. Her exit from life, as in other Shakespearean works, has tragic dignity largely motivated by the Roman concern for honor called pietas which stressed the importance of maintaining honor and dignity for both the State and the family. The Elizabethans also cherished honor so it was a common theme in the works of Shakespeare. Not all scholars believe that Lucrece's suicide was inevitable due to the Roman concept of honor. Stilva for example argues that there is no evidence that Roman Pagans encouraged women to commit suicide circumstances such as this one and although suicide was accepted in Pagan philosophy in some situations, the prevention of rape was not one of them. As an innocent victim of rape, there was no need for Lucrece to commit suicide. The expectation of death before dishonor, or suicide after rape, as proof that a woman was virtuous was a Christian idea dating back to the martyrs and was not rejected by Christians until Saint Augustine developed the Christian view condemning suicide. There is a saying in Spanish "el hubiera no existe" that means; 'What if' doesn't exist. Although this is undoubtedly true, it is hard not to question what would have happened if Lucrece had been strong enough to stand up to her attacker and publicly accuse him instead of taking the 'easy way' out. Would she have gone down in history as a defender of her gender, one of the first women to publicly accuse a rapist and take a stand against women being 'owned' by men and only being as valuable as her 'virtue' was to them? Or would she be an obscure royal figure with a tarnished reputation, as she so obviously feared?

When you come across a paragraph like one of these, label it in the margin. 6. Within each structural subdivision find out what points the author is making. (In the essay about the English 1 final, find out specifically what the author says to do in order to prepare for the exam.) In other words, identify the topic sentence of each important paragraph. Underline the sentence. Sometimes the topic sentence is at the beginning of the paragraph and sometimes at the end. Sometimes the topic is not stated but is only implied 7. You now have the skeleton of the author's argument and should be able to follow his reasoning. If you are still having trouble, try scribbling a word or two in the margins and summing up the paragraphs as if you were annotating a textbook. In the essay about the English 1 final, for instance, you might write "Mark up textbooks" in the margin after one paragraph, and "but not too much" after the next. You can also underline key transitional or structural words or phases like "but", "however", "moreover", "on the other hand", "nevertheless". 8. Now write out , at the beginning or end of the essay, a thesis statement for the essay. Remember, the thesis was his guiding PURPOSE? What audience did he have in mind? 25 Ways to Get the Most Out of Now

...EN110 Achieving Academic Excellence Assignment 02 EN110 Achieving Academic Excellence 25 Ways to Get the Most Out of Now There are several time management techniques to help a person get the most out of now. The following ten methods are what I feel to be most beneficial: 1. Be aware of your best time of day. Being aware of the best time of day to study is especially beneficial to me because throughout the years, I have learned that no matter how hard I try I cannot study late at night – least wise not effectively. I know I am simply a morning student. Knowing when you are most productive helps to schedule your day and also reduces the guilty feeling of “slow” periods because you have planned for them. 2. Learn to say no. In the beginning of my studies, learning to say no was an easy task for me. I was excited about class and I wanted to succeed. As school continued, I found it harder to say no because I was nervous friends and family would begin to think I was “giving them excuses.” I learned an effective way to communicate my needs with them, and soon “saying no” was a perfectly acceptable and efficient response for both parties. 3. Avoid noise distractions. Avoiding noise distractions is an area that requires the most focus for me. I cannot study or work when I have background noise. Knowing this helps to plan my activities throughout the day so I can be the most productive and not back track my efforts constantly. 4. Ask: Would I pay myself for...

...Kyle Kisling April 7th, 2013 Composition 1 Food and Family Food holds a special place in society. Aside from its obvious purpose of survival, food also is a great way to bring people together. The first real example I can provide is the common celebration of Thanksgiving. The day has no real significance other than eating food with family. A turkey is placed at the center of the table, football provides entertainment, and family members enjoy the company of one another. I feel like some people underappreciate the true value of food and the cultural reunions it creates. Though not all countries celebrate Thanksgiving, food still carries an important role in countries all over the world. The first documentary we watched was called Smokin’ Fish. The film went into deep investigation of the culture of Cory Mann. The title alone should give away the idea that food is somewhat involved in Cory’s culture. Cory is an entrepreneur who annually returns to his home village for a few months to catch fish from the river and smoke them. Initially, I questioned his motives when he simply abandons his business and returns home to fish. It came off as strange because most people are not willing to risk their financial security to go fishing for a few months. The film continues on and as it progresses you see that smoking fish carries a much deeper meaning to Cory. Cory is part Indian and smoking fish is a tradition his peoples have had for centuries. He feels as though it is his duty...

...Easy A The Princess Bride, Groundhog Day, and Ferris Bueller’s Day off have all become some of the great classic comedies of all time. What makes a classic comedies movie? A classic stands the test of time. It does not matter the period the film was made, because people can relate to the storyline in each era. The plots are solid. The films are enjoyed generation after generation. I believe Easy A will be joining this group of classic comedies as move generation moves to the next one. What makes Easy A such a great movie, that will last for generations, is its story. About how one lie can change the way everyone see you. It is a relatable and clever movie, with great humor and quotable one-liners. Easy A is about a high school student, Olive Penderghast, played by the talented Emma Stone, finds herself the victim of her school's "rumor mill". When she lies to her best friend Rhiannon, played by Alyson Michalka that she has a date with a nonexistent community college student, so that she doesn’t have to spend the weekend with Rhiannon and her family. The two of them are over heard in the bathroom the next Monday as Olive lies about her encounter, telling Rhiannon that she lost her virginity that weekend with her fictitious boyfriend. The rumor spreads through the school like wild fire; she soon becomes the scandal of the school after the religious fanatic Marianne decides to make her the school outcast. Meanwhile, Olive is studying "The Scarlet Letter" in the English...

...12, 2013 In the movie easy A, a teen comedy, the main character Olive is initially presented to the viewers as the virginal and feminine high school student who dresses like the average high school student, mostly in pants, and turns out to be transformed into the sex object/pin-up girl to resemble her counterparts in the movie. One being her best friend Rhi and the other Marianne, both whom which throughout the entire movie are always in very short skirts and/or extremely revealing tops, especially Rhiannon. Nonetheless, the one normal, dressing female in the movie, Olive, is then in turn forced and presented as a skank, a whore, and a home wrecker. Although one of the central themes of the movie is the loss of virginity, there are no sex scenes and it does displays a witty, contemporary, modern day spin on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel, The Scarlet Letter. Moreover, the message depicted throughout the movie is that an innocent, little white lie can get blown out of proportion and that teenagers in general are concerned of how others perceive them in their day to day lives. The movie starts off with Olive being portrayed as a virginal, down to earth, average high school student with no cares in the world but is hastily transformed into the slutty female character very commonly used throughout Hollywood films to depict females nowadays. When a little white lie about losing her virginity meant for her best friends ears only gets out of hand and spreads across......

How to Set Goals the Easy Way

...Setting goals is extremely easy, although it can take some time to decide exactly what goals you should set for yourself. An easy way to begin is to first create a list of everything you would like to do in life. It doesn't matter what you write, and the more things you can think of the better. When writing the list, try not to think of whether something will be possible or impossible to do, but instead write as though you were writing a wish list where you could have anything you wanted. By doing this you take one step closer to achieving your goals, as often many of our goals are simply left in the mind and forgotten about because we believe that we are incapable of achieving them. However you would be surprised at how many things you thought were impossible, were actually possible if you just took the time, and made the effort to go after them. Once you have created your wish list you should now choose 5 goals that you want to start working on immediately. These goals can be anything you like, although to give your life balance it is a good idea to choose 1 goal for each area of your life. For example, a goal for financial, romantic, personal, spiritual and health are good areas to begin with. Although do what you feel is best, so if you want 3 financial goals and 2 health goals that would be OK. However avoid concentrating your goals on one single area, as this will unbalance your life. Whilst it may be tempting to choose more than 5 goals, 5 is a good number to......

Compare the Ways the Poets Present Different Attitudes Towards Eating Out in the Poems ‘the Sweet Menu’ and ‘Eating Out’

...Compare the ways the poets present different attitudes towards eating out in the poems ‘The Sweet Menu’ and ‘Eating Out’. 1000 Words. In both poems ‘The Sweet Menu’ and ‘Eating Out’, the poets use a range of linguistic techniques to convey the different attitudes towards eating out. In ‘Eating Out’ the poem is written in unrhymed couplets, 14 lines with an extra last line. This gives the somewhat effect of a sonnet possessing an extra line. The poem is told in a series of different experiences in restaurants. Throughout the poem, Fanthorpe recalls visits to restaurants taking the form of initiation in fine dining which was experienced in the poets childhood as her father rehearsed with her the ‘grown-up’ eating out. Fanthorpe has built most of the poem on particular incidents and memories. However the first line encapsulates the whole meaning of the poem: ‘Adventures into rehearsed but unknown living’. This is gives a slight sense of contradiction. ‘Adventures’ should be spontaneous and exciting, but here they are in set patterns of idealised middle-class behaviour about good restaurant dining ‘rehearsed but unknown living’. Throughout the poem, the gradually maturing poet feels dominated by her parents, in clearly Freudian terms. Even as a grown-up woman, when ordering food at a restaurant with her mother, she is unsettled by her mother saying ‘I’ll have whatever you’re having dear’. ‘The Sweet Menu’ is also written in unrhymed couplets with one final......

Their customer service is one of the top rated among fast food restaurants, including McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and more. In-N-Out is characterized for giving customers invisible options or “secret menu” which makes the restaurant even more attractive and famous among fast food chains. Evaluate In-N-Out’s performance relative to customer expectations. What is the outcome of this process? In-N-Out has such a good attention and service to customers that the clients give the franchise an amazing advertisement. The customers give enough advertisement to the franchise so they don’t have to spend millions of dollars paying other advertisements. “Quality you can taste” is what keeps them popular in the market. Another important part of their success is the quality and the freshness of their product; it hasn’t change in years. Do you think In-N-Out should adopt a high growth strategy? Why or why not? I believe In-N-Out should remain with their slow growth strategy. This franchise has definitely gone beyond expectations. In-N-Out is not in every state and that makes it more desirable, so if there is someone near one there is a high chance he or she would be visiting it. With so many customers drawn into In-N-Out’s “no change” philosophy, why don’t more......
