The Carrot Cake Dessert Who would ever think a cake made with a vegetable would turn out to be a delicious dessert that is easy to prepare and serve? My dad’s favorite kind of cake is a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. This cake is now one of my mom’s famous recipes known to the family, friends and co-workers. The carrot cake was modernized in the sixty’s as our nation began looking for healthier snacks and improving and maintaining a healthier diet. It became one of the nation’s trendiest desserts in the health food department with cream cheese frosting. You can add other ingredients like pineapple, oranges, raisins, coconut, papaya or even rum to give it your own touch that will have others asking for the recipe. Prior to going to the local grocer to pick up your ingredients, you need to make sure you have a list of things you will need. After acquiring all of your ingredients, you must follow the instructions below to make a delicious carrot cake of your own. The first thing that you need to do is gather together all of your ingredients and tools. You will need two bowls, a set of measuring spoons (teaspoons and tablespoons), a measuring cup, a spatula, a thirteen inch rectangle baking pan, and Pam, a non-stick spray. Now that you have your tools, you can start with your ingredients, which consist of two cups and one tablespoon flour, two cups granulated sugar, two teaspoons baking powder, one teaspoon baking soda, one teaspoon salt, and two teaspoons ground cinnamon. Next are your wet ingredients, which are one and a half cups canola oil, four eggs, two teaspoons of vanilla extract, two cups grated carrots, half a cup of diced pineapples and one cup chopped pecans. For the cream cheese frosting, you will need six ounces of cream cheese, three tablespoons of cream, and one and a half teaspoons of vanilla extract. Now that you have everything…...

Carrots

... Carrots The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus, Etymology: from Late Latin carōta, from Greek καρότον karōton, originally from the Indo-European root ker- (horn), due to its horn-like shape) is a root vegetable, usually orange in colour, though purple, red, white, and yellow varieties exist. It has a crisp texture when fresh. The most commonly eaten part of a carrot is a taproot, although the greens are edible as well. It is a domesticated form of the wild carrot Daucus carota, native to Europe and southwestern Asia. The domestic carrot has been selectively bred for its greatly enlarged and more palatable, less woody-textured edible taproot. It is a biennial plant which grows a rosette of leaves in the spring and summer, while building up the stout taproot, which stores large amounts of sugars for the plant to flower in the second year. The flowering stem grows to about 1 metre (3 ft) tall, with an umbel of white flowers that produce a fruit called a mericarp by botanists, which is a type of schizocarp. Methods of consumption and Uses Carrots can be eaten in a variety of ways. Only 3% of the β-carotene in raw carrots is released during digestion: this can be improved to 39% by pulping, cooking and adding......

Cakes

...1 1.1 CAKES AND PASTRIES Introduction Bakery products have become very popular throughout the country. Breads and biscuits are the most common products but other items like cakes, pastries, cream-rolls, cookies etc. are also not lagging far behind. These items are consumed by people of all age groups across the board. Nature of these products is such that the consumers prefer fresh items. Shelf life of cakes & pastries is limited and thus local manufacturers enjoy distinct advantage. In spite of continuous increase in the consumption of these items during last few years, the per capita consumption is still very low compared to the advanced countries. There is, thus, good scope for these items. A good pastry is light and airy, easily broken in the mouth (what is called 'short' eating), but firm enough to support the weight of the filling. The dough must be well mixed but care must be taken not to overmix the pastry. This results in long gluten strands and toughens the pastry. Thus, the manufacture of good pastry is something of a fine art. 1.2 Objective The primary objective of the model report is to facilitate the entrepreneurs in understanding the importance of setting up unit of cakes and pastries. This model report will serve as guidance to the entrepreneurs on starting up such a new project and basic technical knowledge for setting up such a facility. 1.3 Raw Material Availability The all important raw materials will be wheat flour, sugar, eggs and ghee for......

My Favorite Dessert: Phatty Cakes

...visited a tiny restaurant by the name of Cakes&Ale. Accompanied by local Chefs and Mixologists, I had no idea what I was in store for. We ordered several small plates to share, beers, and a few desserts. Amongst the desserts was a small plate with 3 cream-filled cookies called “Phatty Cakes”, that to me, resembled little debbie's oatmeal pies. Skeptical, I picked one up and took a bite. Contrary to my preconceived notions, this little delicious treat turned out to be a marscarpone filled gingerbread whoopie pie. Soft gingerbread cookies with a sweet yet savory marscarpone filling, that almost melts in your mouth. After my initial visit, I would visit Cakes&Ale solely for the infamous “Phatty Cakes”. At 3 cakes for $6, I would stock up buying over a dozen little treats. And no, I never bothered to share, nor did I bother to tell anyone where I got them; they were truly my little secret. After years of consuming Phatty Cakes, I had to know who was behind the tiny delicious treat. Pastry Chef, Cynthia Wong was the mastermind behind this decadent little treat. “The 36-year-old Southerner has held a lot of jobs in the Atlanta food industry. She was the production manager for Via Elisa Fresh Pasta, a food stylist for the TBS program “Dinner & a Movie” and even a food reviewer for Creative Loafing. But she has found her metier at Billy Allin’s Cakes & Ale restaurant.”( Kessler 2010) In 2011, the Pastry Chef behind my favorite dessert, took her recipe to a restaurant by the......

The Reason Why I Started to Eat Carrots

...The Reason Why I Started To Eat Carrots It is Sunday afternoon; I’m hungry and I can’t take off my mind the carrot cake that I eat each year on my birthday. I’m gazing at the splendid vista that my huge picture window offers. It is winter now, and as far I can see, there is no green anywhere in the woods, only the desolate gray that is scattered among the crunchy branches, the dead frozen grass that doesn’t lure the deer to come by and say hi to the window. But here I am, the time is passing, and I have the feeling of being part of a movie playing in slow motion, one that shows my life passing by in front of my eyes, and I can’t touch it. Walking with my head down, suddenly, a sparkle of light on the ground calls my attention; it is a distortion of the sun that deceives me with a fractured hint of a gem that becomes the most important thing to me for the next three seconds. It is a leaf. Here is when the shining leaf took me back to a big moment, that moment in the past that everyone remembers once in a while. Those memories that transport us back to times of happiness. The shining leaf I had rescued has the same brown glazed color of a carrot cake. Those memories are ‘messing’ in my head, just to cause my emotions to emerge. Was this weird or just coincidence? The golden brown color in a carrot cake is the only thing I can think about right now. Yeah, life gives surprises and on this occasion it gives me a trip to the past. I was just five years old. The memories come......
