Rachel Maddow vs. Bill O’ Rielly
In August 2008, MSNBC announced The Rachel Maddow Show would replace Verdict with Dan Abrams in the network's 9 p.m. slot the following month. Following its debut, the show topped Countdown as the highest rated show on MSNBC on several occasions. After being on air for more than a month, Maddow's program doubled the audience that hour. Early reviews for her show were mostly positive. The Los Angeles Times writer Matea Gold stated Maddow "finds the right formula on MSNBC," and The Guardian writes Maddow has become the "star of America's cable news." Associated Press columnist David Bauder said she's " Olbermann's political soul mate" and the Olbermann-Maddow shows are a "liberal two-hour block." Distinguishing herself from others on the left, Maddow said she's a "national security liberal" and in a different interview that she's not "a partisan." The New York Times called her a "defense policy wonk" that is writing a book on the role of the military in postwar American politics. (The book, titled Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, was published in 2012.) During the 2008 presidential election, Maddow did not formally support any candidate. Concerning Barack Obama's candidacy, Maddow said during the primaries, "I have never and still don't think of myself as an Obama supporter, either professionally or actually." In March 2010, Republican Scott Brown, the junior United States Senator from Massachusetts, speculated that Maddow was going to run against him for his seat in 2012. He used this premise for a fundraising email that read "...The Massachusetts political machine is looking for someone to run against me. And you're not going to believe who they are supposedly trying to recruit — liberal MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow." Maddow said Brown's speculation was false. On her March 23, 2010, TV program, Maddow said, "I have the best job in the world. I am not running for office. Scott Brown didn't ask me if I was running or planning to run for office before he wrote a fundraising letter with my name. No, it's completely made up by him." Despite her comments, the next day Brown continued along the same line, telling a Boston radio station, "Bring her on." To help put an end to the matter, Maddow ran a full-page advertisement in the Boston Globe confirming she was not running, and separately demanded Brown's apology. She added that despite repeated invitations over the months, Brown had refused to appear on her TV program.
O'Reilly has long said that his inspiration for speaking up for average Americans are his working-class roots. He has pointed to his boyhood home in Levittown, New York as a credential. In an interview with The Washington Post, O'Reilly's mother said that her family lived in Westbury, which is a few miles from Levittown. Citing this interview, then liberal talk-show pundit Al Franken accused O'Reilly of distorting his background to create a more working-class image. O'Reilly countered that The Washington Post misquoted his mother, and he said his mother still lives in his childhood home, which was built by William Levitt. O'Reilly placed a copy of the house's mortgage on his website; the mortgage shows a Levittown postal address. O'Reilly has also said, "You don't come from any lower than I came from on an economic scale" and that his father—a currency accountant for an oil company-- "never earned more than $35,000 a year in his life." Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting has calculated that adjusted for inflation, $35,000 in 1978 would be worth over $90,000 in 2001 dollars. O'Reilly responded that his father's $35,000 income only came at the end of his long career.
On The O'Reilly Factor and on his former talk-radio program, Bill O'Reilly has focused on news and commentary related to politics and culture. O'Reilly has long said that he does not identify with any political party. On December 6, 2000, the Daily News in New York reported, however, that he had been registered with the Republican Party in the state of New York since 1994. When questioned about this, he said that he was not aware of it and says he registered as an independent after the interview. During a broadcast of The Radio Factor, O'Reilly said that there was no option to register as an independent voter; however, there was in fact a box marked "I do not wish to enroll in party." Despite being registered as an Independent, many view him as a conservative figure. A Pew Research February 2009 poll found that 66% of his television viewers identify themselves as conservative, 24% moderate, and 3% liberal. A November 2008 poll by Zogby International found that O'Reilly was the second most trusted news personality after Rush Limbaugh.…...

...Bill Davis Davis 1 Professor ENG 111 15 September 2010 Not Your Typical Fast Food Restaurant When you first look think of McDonald’s, you probably think of just a place to pick up a quick, cheep meal. In some cases, this is true. McDonalds is one of the most widely known and popular fast food restaurants around the world. It may not be a place for a romantic date, but there are not too many places you can go have a dinner with your family with the bill coming out to be under twenty dollars. Sure the food may be unhealthy, but it is the cheapest and most efficient route to satisfying your appetite. This may be why McDonald’s has become such a powerful food chain. But after visiting I realized the many different features that make this restaurant so attracting to people. Around lunchtime at noon, I walked across the parking lot, I noticed the drive through was packed with people just waiting to get their meals and get on the road. So I walked inside the doors of the McDonald’s, passed the cashier, and took a seat in one of the booths in the dining area. The booths were big and comfortable and they were all along walls of the dining area. This area was designated for people that wanted to sit down and enjoy their meals. People are spread out around the tables and booths far enough to where they are not invading other peoples conversations. ...

...Bill Miller and Value Trust Case Analysis Case Facts: 1  By middle 2005, Leg Mason Value Trust managed by Bill had outperformed S&P 500 index for 14 years in a row. This was longest successful run by any fund manager.  The average return on the fund was 14.6% which surpassed the S&P by 3.67% per year.  The value trust only had 36 holdings, 10 of which accounted for 50% of the fund’s assets.  No manager had matched Miller’s consistent index beating record.  Miller’s results were in contradiction to the conventional theory which suggests that it is extremely difficult to beat the market on a sustained basis as it is characterized by high competition, easy entry and informational efficiency. Problem Statement:  The Lag Mason Value Trust has been able to outperform the S&P 500 index for 15 consecutive years till 2005. Will the trust to able to consistently deliver similar performance in future?  Should a rational investor buy shares in Value Trust as on middle of 2005?  What can be possible reasons for the exemplary record of the Value Trust?  Can the reasons of the trust’s success can be only attributed to the trading skills and style of Bill Miller or is it sheer luck? US Mutual Fund Market:  The mutual fund market in the US has seen exponential growth in the last 30 years. The numbers of mutual funds have increased from 361 to 8,044 in between 1970 to 2005.  By 2004, Mutual fund owned nearly 20% of the outstanding stocks of US companies.  The value......

...ECPSC- 2013 CURRENT AFFAIRS HANDOUT NO 13 LOKPAL BILL 1. Background. (a) The Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC) while recommending the constitution of Lokpal was convinced that such an institution was justified not only for removing the sense of injustice from the minds of adversely affected citizens but also necessary to instill public confidence in the efficiency of the administrative machinery. Following this, the Lokpal Bill was for the first time presented during the fourth Lok Sabha in 1968, and was passed there in 1969. However, while it was pending in the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha was dissolved, and so the bill was not passed at that time. (b) The bill was revived in 1971, 1977, 1985, 1989, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2005, 2008 most recently in 2011. Each time, after the bill was introduced to the house, it was referred to some committee for improvements a joint committee of parliament, or a departmental standing committee of the Home Ministry, and before the government could take a final stand on the issue, the house was dissolved. Several flaws have been cited in the recent draft of the Lokpal Bill. Meanwhile the activists of India Against Corruption (IAC) have prepared a draft for the bill called Jan Lokpal Bill. 2. Composition of Lokpal. The Lokpal will be a three member body with a chairperson who is or was a chief justice or Supreme Court judge, and two members who are or have been high courts judges or chief justices. Jame Rachels Essay

...James Rachels argues against the traditional doctrine in medicine that prohibits the physician from taking any action which would contribute to the death of a patient. Rachels takes the position that in some cases, abiding by this doctrine leads to more suffering. In the situation where continued medical support would prolong suffering, doctors have the option of discontinuing support. If, according to Rachel, they choose that option on the basis of reducing suffering then they can do better with active euthanasia. He points out the inconsistency in discontinuing medical support but not going further with active euthanasia, because he sees no moral distinction between active and passive euthanasia–they are both intentional acts to terminate a life (which is in fact murder, but more on that later). Simply letting someone die is morally the same as killing someone. When a doctor lets a patient die, the doctor is not doing nothing. In other words, contrary to how it may seem, doctors are acting by not acting. One is acting in the choice to not do anything. Rachels uses the example of a situation in which a doctor does not treat a patient of a life-threatening illness that is known to be treatable. By withholding treatment, the doctor is actually committing murder. It seems to me that Rachels puts doctors in a situation where they must strictly either be torturers or murderers. In choosing to prolong the patient’s life, the doctor is criticized for prolonging suffering. If it......

Iefficiency of Splitting the Bill

...The Economic Journal, 114 (April), 265–280. Ó Royal Economic Society 2004. Published by Blackwell Publishing, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford OX4 2DQ, UK and 350 Main Street, Malden, MA 02148, USA. THE INEFFICIENCY OF SPLITTING THE BILL* Uri Gneezy, Ernan Haruvy and Hadas Yafe When agents are ascribed selfish motives, economic theory points to grave inefficiencies resulting from externalities. We study a restaurant setting in which groups of diners are faced with different ways of paying the bill. The two main manipulations are splitting the bill between the diners and having each pay individually. We find that subjects consume more when the cost is split, resulting in a substantial loss of efficiency. Diners prefer the individual pay to the inefficient split-bill method. When forced to play according to a less preferred set of rules, they minimise their individual losses by taking advantage of others. Economic theory is unambiguous in its prediction that if externalities exist, outcomes are likely to be inefficient when agents selfishly maximise. The literature on externalities, as well as its derivatives in public goods, tragedy of the commons and moral hazard studies, has shown that externalities lead to inefficient levels of production and consumption. This result depends crucially on the general assumption taken by such studies that human agents maximise selfish payoffs without regard for others. With the emergence of behavioural economics, economists have come to question......

Rh Bill: Kasamaan O Kabutihan?

...RH BILL: KABUTIHA O KASAMAAN? Reflection on Rachels

...THE CHALLENGE OF CULTURAL RELATIVISM by JAMES RACHELS “Morality differs in every society, and is a convenient term for socially approved habits.” Ruth Benedict, Patterns of Culture (1934) 2.1 How Different Cultures Have Different Moral Codes Darius, a king of ancient Persia, was intrigued by the variety of cultures he encountered in his travels. He had found, for example, that the Callatians (a tribe of Indians) customarily ate the bodies of their dead fathers. The Greeks, of course, did not do that—the Greeks practiced cremation and regarded the funeral pyre as the natural and fitting way to dispose of the dead. Darius thought that a sophisticated understanding of the world must include an appreciation of such differences between cultures. One day, to teach this lesson, he summoned some Greeks who happened to be present at his court and asked them what they would take to eat the bodies of their dead fathers. They were shocked, as Darius knew they would be, and replied that no amount of money could persuade them to do such a thing. Then Darius called in some Callatians, and while the Greeks listened asked them what they would take to burn their dead fathers' bodies. The Callatians were horrified and told Darius not even to mention such a dreadful thing. This story, recounted by Herodotus in his History illustrates a recurring theme in the literature of social science: Different cultures have different moral codes. What is thought right within one group may be utterly......

O vs Othello

...depression, jealousy can lead to anger and violence. Humans are not privileged to this emotion alone but all mammals are susceptible to such feelings. It has been suggested through research “jealousy first evolved in the context of sibling-parent relationships where dependent offspring compete for parental resources” (Harris and Prouvost). In both the movie O. and the play Othello jealousy is the driving emotion that causes the major conflicts. Despite their 400-year time difference, O. exhibits a near exact representation of Shakespeare’s Othello. In Othello, the character Iago is jealous that he was passed over for a promotion. Because of this, he attempts to get revenge by lying and deceiving others to discredit their character. An instance of this is when Iago deceived his friend Cassio by getting him drunk and causing him to fight Roderigo. This fight caused Cassio to lose his lieutenant position, which was the promotion Iago was jealous about. Iago also lied to Othello to convince him that his wife was being unfaithful with Cassio. These lies caused Othello’s jealousy and rage that lead him to murder his wife. In the movie O., the character Hugo is jealous that his father, the head basketball coach, has chosen two other basketball players as the MVP’s of the team. These two players, Oden and Michael, seem destine to have bright futures. Hugo, being jealous of these two, concocts a plan with the help of his friend Roger to discredit them.
