PICOT is an acronym for the elements of the clinical question:

patient population (P),

intervention or issue of interest (I),

comparison intervention or issue of interest (C),

outcome(s) of interest (O),

and time it takes for the intervention to achieve the outcome(s) (T).

When Rebecca asks why the PICOT question is so important, Carlos explains that it's a consistent, systematic way to identify the components of a clinical issue. Using the PICOT format to structure the clinical question helps to clarify these components, which will guide the search for the evidence. A well-built PICOT question increases the likelihood that the best evidence to inform practice will be found quickly and efficiently.

...Depression and decreased perception of social support are associated with mortality in several studies of ESRD patients (Cukor, Cohen, Peterson, & Kimmel, 2007). Decreased marital satisfaction, lower socioeconomic status, and disturbances in family dynamic can affect how a patient perceives social support (Cukor et al., 2007). Social support is intended to benefit the patient and their ability to cope with stress of having ESRD (Cukor et al., 2007). Support is divided into three types: instrumental, informational, and emotional (Cukor et al., 2007). Instrumental support provides material aid, such as financial assistance (Cukor et al., 2007). Since Medicare supports all renal dialysis patients of any age, this is an example of instrumental support for Amanda. Informational support refers to providing helpful information such as guidance (Cukor et al., 2007). Studies show that religious and spiritual beliefs are associated with decreased perception of burden of illness, decreased depression, and increased perception of social support, and better satisfaction with life (Spinale et al., 2008). The social worker can help bring a Chaplin to speak to Amanda about her spirituality. Another form of guidance is having a patient who had similar experiences with End Stage Renal Disease talk to the patient through a mentor program. Emotional support involves expressing empathy and providing encouragement of emotional expression (Cukor et al., 2007). Health-care professionals can......

Pico School Analysis

...Pico School Analysis What is the foundation of effective leadership? Reshaping the Path to School Leadership offers insight into the elements of school leadership by offering a case study through the political, human resource, symbolic, and structural frames. Analyzing this school and its framework offers the reader an opportunity to grow in leadership through the journey at Pico School. As the new principal and teacher begin to understand the structure of the school, they come to understand the norms in each frame of leadership. In the political frame the new principal, Jamie, becomes disappointed when his speech is not well received regarding the new school year. He had inadvertently offended veteran teachers with his personal vision statement before understanding the school’s status quo, which had been an environment of complacency. The human resources frame was an environment of severe concern with the new principal. He noticed signs of hostility varying from ethnic slurs to anonymous letters attacking him. As the year progressed, this frame was in a continuous state of flux. The system of structure continued to change throughout the school year, particularly the discipline program and the NCLB policies. As expectations changed, teachers were openly resistant and felt threatened. This norm needed to be addressed in order to begin the process of moving on from the constant presence of his reputation. The symbolic frame is present in the form of the former......

...uk), also the article states that there was no other research done on the topic therefore a combination of studies could not be gathered creating a meta analysis. By using the four step guide to Pico, which is population, intervention, comparison and outcome, a clinical question was able to be formulated. This was ‘Do adolescents minimise pain they feel?’ From the question that was formulated, keywords were picked out in order to put into an electronic database these were; adolescents, pain and minimise. This was so that the most appropriate articles and other pieces of research relating to the keywords would be brought up (Bournemouth.ac.uk). If there were to be no articles relating to the keywords other synonyms can be used in their place. However over 1000 articles were brought up relating to the keywords. Therefore the limitations were changed so that only articles written after 2006 were able to be shown, as well as the full articles having to be online, and in the context of a journal, article, book or EBook. This was so that the research and information within the articles was most up to date and reliable (support.mircosoft.com) The article “Correlation and consistency of pain severity rating by teenagers using different pain scales” was most appropriate to answer the Pico question. On the other hand, the article contradicts the first article that was looked at. This is because the first article suggests pain complaints are often ignored, however in the second......

The Effects of Tourism Demand in Pico de Loro in the Municipality of Ternate Cavite(Not Reliable)

...Introduction Mt. Pico de loro (also known Mt, Palay -Palay) is considered the highest mountain of the province of Cavite. The mountain lies the boundary of the provinces of Cavite and Batangas. The are two jump -off -points and one of it is located in Ternate Cavite. Centuries ago, the Spaniards aboard their galleons to Manila Bay noticed the form of a giant parrot, perched in the forested mountains in Cavite. They named it "Pico de Loro" - "Parrot's Peak" Today, mountaineers who visit Pico de Loro discover that it is as enchanting as its name. High on Cavite's highest point, they could behold the rocky tower that the Spanish sailors once saw as the parrot's beak, and they could gaze towards South China Sea where the galleons once sailed, all the way to the historic island fort of Corregidor. Gusts of sea breeze reach the peak, refreshing hikers after a four-hour climb. The peak's rocky outcropping is dramatic, and sharply contrasts with the plains of Cavite and the waters of South China Sea. Such an experience is only the highlight of a trip to Pico de Loro, which is located on a DENR Protected Area. Nestled near the beaches of Cavite such as Puerto Azul and Caylabne, it is actually part of a small mountain range known as Mt. Palay-Palay. Readily accessible by bus from Manila, Pico de Loro has gained fame as a perfect weekend getaway. Even during the dry season, its forests protect hikers from the sun. Pico de loro Mt. Therefore, this research essay will focus on the issues related to conflict of autism as a side effect of measles mumps rubella vaccine. The PICO process is the method to develop a framework and answer to a clinical question using evidence based practice based on literature research. The acronym PICO stands for P (Population/patient)-this addresses the specific population. From the scenario, it can be identified that the 11month baby as the patient or population. ...Title: Pain, Coping and Sleep in Children and Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease (Quantitative?) Abstract: Purpose The study examined the relationships among pain, pain coping, and sleep, and assessed factors (age, gender, frequency, and intensity of pain) that affect pain, coping, and sleep in children with sickle cell disease ( SCD). Methods Participants (66) were 39 children ( M = 11.5 years) and 27 adolescents ( M = 15.5 years) with SCD who completed an electronic visual analog scale ( eVAS), Pain Coping Questionnaire, and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. Results About two-thirds of the children reported pain the previous month. No significant differences were found between pain and age, gender, pain intensity, or frequency. Most children coped with pain by seeking information, problem solving, seeking social support, and positive self-statements. There were significant negative correlations in males between worse pain severity and behavioral distraction and internalizing or catastrophizing. The majority (91.2%) had mild to severe sleep disturbances, with 18.2% requiring sleeping medication three or more times a week. There were no significant differences between sleep and age, gender, pain intensity, or frequency. Conclusion Children with SCD experience pain that affects sleep patterns and the way they cope with pain. Nurses need to concurrently assess pain, coping, and sleep and promote sleep hygiene and positive coping strategies during pain episodes. Graves, J. K....

...the question a PICO principle is used. This principle identifies four key elements to consider, which guide and structure the answerable clinical question. The elements are: Population, Intervention, Comparator and Outcome (Hastings & Fisher, 2014). PICO question development When treating the elderly (aged 65 and older) with symptoms of depression (P), does engaging in a complementary intervention such as music therapy (I), in comparison to anti-depressant medications (C), have a greater effect on decreasing the symptoms of depression (O)? Identifying the population determines the target patient or process of interest. In this case, geriatrics or older adults (aged 65 and older) with depression is specific and marks it achievable to locate information that is relevant to the clinical question. The intervention is a guide to the best practice to be assessed, for example, music therapy as being an effective alternative to improve symptoms of depression. A comparator is essential to review the most effective form of practice, for instance, reviewing anti-depressant medications as the most or least effective practice. Finally an outcome is provided to clearly understand the success of the clinical question. In this case, the success is to decrease the symptoms of depression. Searching for the evidence To ensure that the evidence is accurate and found correctly, a specific search strategy is to enter key terms, based on the PICO question,......

Hlsc 122 Scenario 2

... This essay will discuss the scenario of a 22-year-old woman, Susan, who is suffering from a UTI, who wishes to drink cranberry juice as part of her treatment, instead of taking her prescribed antibiotics. Wanting to receive the best treatment for her condition, she decides to investigate further about the use of cranberry juice as a treatment for UTI’s. PICO Question Development The research that is being undertaken is using the framework of a PICO question. A PICO question is framed by studying the four elements of a clinical investigation: Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcome. (Liampattong, 2013). The population in this scenario is Females aged 18-30. This age range is the most common ages for females to contract a UTI. It is important that the age range is specific so that the PICO question can be answered. Intervention for this scenario would be the use of antibiotics and the comparison would be to drink cranberry juice. The outcome is based on the ability to compare the between the two groups, and so is if cranberry juice would effectively treat a UTI. From the PICO steps we can develop the PICO question of: do females between the ages of 18-30 have a higher treatment rate using antibiotics than those who drink cranberry juice? Searching For Evidence The key words used in this research are: Urinary Tract Infection, UTI, 18-30 years old, females, cranberry juice, antibiotics. The alternative words would be: treatment and condition. Words that could......

Formulation of a Picco Question

...Formulation of a PICO question and online defence of that question. Is the NHS Otoacoustic emission hearing screening (I) for newborn babies (p), more accurate in diagnosing hearing loss(o), compared with the Health visitor distraction test(c). The assignment aim is to formulate a PICO question, discuss and demonstrate the skills, in formulating evidence based practice (EBP) questions, using the PICO framework and defence of that question. The question above was formulated by the student utilising the PICO framework by (Sackett et al. 1997), which focused my enquiries, PICO is a mnemonic used to describe the four elements of a good clinical foreground question P for population, I for Intervention C for comparison, and O for outcome, as devised by (Sackett et al. 1997). According to Sackett et al. (1997) the process of enquiry occurring within practice, stimulates questioning and these enquiries can be posed as (EBP) questions. The inspiration for the (EBP) question was, based on practice experience, when clients asked how effective the Otoacoustic emissions test (OAE) method recommended by (United Kingdom. National Screening Committee, 2006) (UK NSC 2006), and how it compared with the, Health visitors distraction test (HVDT) (Great Britain. National Health Service patient choices, 2011). I became aware of a gap in my knowledge (Lai, 2009) proposes the ability to recognise issues in practice settings and translate into explicit questions to fill knowledge gaps, is......

...nursing care. Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) involves the process of researching and implementing proven evidence in providing better patient care and is crucial as the role of the nurse is ever expanding (Banning, 2005). This essay will demonstrate that as a student nurse, the author has gained the necessary skills to conduct an evidence-based literature search and review and implement that knowledge into practice. Starting with a brief discussion on EBN it will go on to identify a suitable research question. During a placement on a medical ward the author noticed that nurses experienced many interruptions whilst conducting medication rounds and this review will consider ways to minimise interruptions and thus improve patient safety. Using the PICO acronym a suitable research question was formulated, ‘do interruptions during medication rounds increase the drugs administration errors made by nurses?’ A short description of the literature search is given and a summary of findings is presented in tabular form. Five original articles were selected and one chosen to critically appraise (see appendix 2). The rest of the essay will focus on reviewing the five articles. It will furthermore demonstrate the link between interruptions during drug rounds and patient and nurse safety, consider the implications of the studies for nursing practice and include the nurse’s perspective of these interruptions. Dale (2005) defines EBP as ‘the nurse making conscious judgements about available......
