No Angel

Losing a close relative is something no one is ever really prepared for. It is as well different from individual to individual how you react to the loss of a dear one. On the one hand, you would like to remember them and still let them be a part of your life but on the other hand, you have to move on for the sake of yourself. Living in the past has never proved useful. Many experience this dilemma thus many struggle to decide when the time is to return to the daily life and continue living. This is a painful time Sometimes, the loss of beloved ones can be so heartbreaking that you might still see them in your daily life despite the fact that they are already dead. This could give you the comfort of them still being around, while you can still carry out conversations and feel like they are alive. The protagonist, Annie, experiences this supernatural situation in the short story “No Angel” written by Bernie McGill in 2011.
The story is told in a first person narrative with a limited point of view, where the reader has full access to the protagonist’s thoughts, however because we are dealing with a first person narrator, we do not hear the story from a different perspective. Thus first person narrators can debatably be defined as unreliable.
Another aspect of using a first person narrator is that the reader is able to identify oneself with the protagonist because the reader is basically inside her head. The loss of a family member is a devastating situation, which many can relate to.
In this short the period of time does not pass in the traditional chronological order where event A is followed by event B. The story includes nothing but flashbacks. Instead of introducing the characters in the beginning the author has chosen to use in medias res which is an effect where the story begins in the middle of an important event. This method is often used in short stories because of the length limitation on the short story genre.
This story begins with a long flashback in which you find out about the first time the main character sees her father after his passing. As soon as this flashback is concluded the reader is brought straight into another flashback. This is very typical for this short story as we jump from one flashback into another one throughout the whole story. In these constant flashbacks you learn about the important characters and events that has taken place.

You do not learn much about the other characters in the story besides what the protagonist describes. You are told about her father, whom she refers to as ‘’Daddy’’ and her mother, whom she refers to as ‘’Mum.’’ The two other characters you hear about in the story are Robbie, the main character’s brother, and Thomas, the ex-boyfriend. The three family members “daddy”, “mum”, and Robbie have all passed away and are no longer a part of the main character’s life. Thomas is still alive, but not together with Annie anymore. The narrator mostly describes the characters through their actions.
The main character seems like a very lonely person. In the flashbacks she is never together with any friends. She does not have any contact with anyone apart from her dead father, who shows up in her mind from time to time. Even though it is never really indicated that she is sad or lonely, it is a very plausible reason that she sees her father becauset she never got over his death. She must have shared a strong bond with her father, which would make sense, since they were together for nearly 22 years after the tragic deaths of her mother and brother. She can as well be described as an insecure person with very low self-esteem, because she used to admire Robbie’s boldness and high level of confidence, which was something she always lacked. This is also the reason why she fell for Thomas in the first place. He had some of the same boldness and confidence that she admired in her brother.
The supernatural elements play a part in the short story and they give the text an uncanny feel to it. E.g. when the protagonist sees her father for the first time after his death she notices that the growth on his face had now turned into a scar. This tells the reader that the father’s body has continued living and functioned even though he has been dead.
We are not told why the protagonist has conversations with her deceased father. That is up to the reader to interpret. A possible interpretation is that the loneliness and difficulties in coping with her family being dead makes the protagonist create these supernatural encounters inside her own mind. The title of the story mentions a supernatural element, angels. An interpretation of the title could be that it is a reference to her dad not being an angel. The father’s appearances brings nothing but negative comments with him, and therefore the father might be labeled as “No Angel”. A different interpretation could be that the protagonist does not need an angel anymore in the end. She does not need her father to be an angel or her guardian angel anymore. Annie’s mind is divided, where one part of her is trying to move on from her family’s death and live her own life. In the last paragraph you see an example of this when Annie asks her father if he will leave her alone now. On the other hand, she desperately needs her family because of her aforementioned insecurities. You could even interpret the last line “You know where we are” as an encouragement for her to join the rest of the family in heaven by committing suicide. This way she will not be lonely, and instead she will be reunited with her family.
The overall theme that the author is trying to get across is that time heals all wounds. Everyone has people that they love very much, people that they cannot imagine being gone forever one day. Death is, for many, the biggest fear, however it is also the one thing in life that is certain. Everyone dies eventually. What is important is to remember to love our friends and family, and cherish every moment with them. When they die there is nothing to do about it. People cannot spend the rest of their lives suffering from something that is the most natural thing in life. It is important to remember them but it is also a necessity to overcome the pain and continue living our own lives and try to be as happy as we can be. That is what they would want us to be.

Angel

...Terri Wilson English 140-01 Nicholas 10 October 2012 Angel As I slide another book onto the shelf, I am drawn back to that night….. The old oaks lining the street created a perfect canopy over the sleeping neighborhood of neat and tiny cottage homes. The branches seemed to be expertly woven together. The moon was full and fat but only small slivers of light slipped through the leaves. I stood as motionless as a statue on the corner, watching and listening for any other signs of life. The night air was so crisp and my senses so predatorily heightened that I felt sure I would be able to detect even the softest scent of another’s presence. I was alone and undetected, my natural state. I began to silently saunter down the little lane. I nonchalantly inspected the houses as I went, until I came upon the one that drew me in with that magnetic pull I had come to know and love so well. That feeling meant that that peace would soon be restored to my aching, raging mind. I knew that other voice inside of me would be silenced once I had carried out its orders once again. I cautiously crept around to the back of the home and immediately took note of the swing set in the yard. A small smile turned the corner of my lips up ever so slightly. This was the place. I looked across the back of the house, and couldn’t believe my good luck. No, not luck, destiny it must have been. Some force out there in the universe was as intent as I that my task be completed. ...

...Angels Among Us Melissa Sheeley ENG 125 Andrea Moak March 21, 2011 As the song from the band Alabama goes, “I believe there are angels among us, sent down to us from somewhere up above, they come to you and me in our darkest hours to show us how to live, to teach us how to give, to guide us with the light of love (Lyrics Mode, 2011).” I think the poem Grief Calls Us to the Things of this World (Clugston, 2010) written by Sherman Alexie has a lot in common with Alabama’s song I Believe There are Angels Among Us. The paper you are about to read is going to describe how they relate to each other and analyze the poem as to whether after someone passes if they are still around us. The song sung by Alabama tells of a boy walking home and gets lost in the dark in the woods as he takes a short cut home. A man takes him by the hand and helps him home safely. The boy’s mom does not see the man standing next to her son as he stands on the front steps holding hands with her son. The boy figures an angel has come down from Heaven and helped him get home safely. The song goes on to say how even in our darkest hours there is someone there telling us it is going to be okay and will get us through. The theme of the poem written by Sherman Alexie is that of a reminder of his dad not being around anymore physically but spiritually, he writes of a man going to a hotel room and finding a phone next to the toilet in the bathroom....

Angels

...James Coates Mrs. Kopcak English May 10, 2006 Angels Angels were a major part of ancient civilizations, but how did the whole myth about angels start and has it changed over the years? How does the past compare to today’s world? Are there different classes of angels? What are their jobs, what do their jobs have them doing? The word 'angel' comes from the Greek angelos, which itself could be considered as a translation of the Hebrew word mal'akh, meaning 'messenger', suggesting that a being responsible for carrying messages between the human world and some other realm or realms of existence, someone who is an intermediary between 'down here' and 'up there'. The origins of angels, started back in ancient Sumeria. The Sumerian society is the oldest society that has left us clear evidence of the use of a winged human motif. This evidence is in the form of stone carvings, either in the form of three-D statues or relief carvings that provide the illusion of three-dimensionality. The religion of these people was complex, embracing a wide variety of spirits and gods, but of particular interest was their belief in 'messengers of the gods', angelic forces who ran errands between gods and humans. The Sumerians also believed that each person had a 'ghost' of some sort (what we would now probably label as 'guardian angel') with this entity remaining a constant companion for a person throughout their life. After the polytheistic Semitic tribes had conquered the Sumerians around 1900...

...No Angel Losing a family member, a friend or a loved one can be very painful and difficult experience to overcome and accept. On the one hand, we want to remember the one who passed away, but on the other we don’t want to accept the fact that they’re gone and will never be with us again. Sometimes, our loss can even be so great that our imagination creates person who passed away and makes us able to talk to them as if nothing ever happened, as if they never passed away. This is exactly the case of the main character of the short story “No Angel” from 2010 by Bernie McGill, who deals with the loneliness and grief of losing her family. The short story is told from a first person limited point of view, and the events are seen through the eyes of our main character, whose name we aren’t told. We jump back and forward in time with flashbacks and flash-forwards, and there’s no chronological order to the story. This is further proven when the story starts in medias res with a very important event. The story starts with a flash back in time to when our main character meets her father in the bathroom for the first time after he had passed away. Our main character is taking a shower, when her dad suddenly appears in in the bathroom, standing in front of the sink and the mirror with a razor shaving. Her dad is described in a way that indicates she knows him very well, from top to toe: “He looked more or less the same. When he turned his face to scrape the razor along his jaw, I......

Angels

... This was what it was like. It was very strange to live in that realm. And it didn’t just suddenly go off. See we have barely touched the fringe of what God wants. When I saw the benefits of praying in tongues for 8 hours, it stirred my desire to see what happens if you go further. That was when I went for 2 days without sleep and for 48 hours I just went on in tongues. And you would have to have a big jar of water. You will get pretty thirsty in the natural. But at the end of those 48 hours something snapped. It was like a veil was opened. It was like moving back into the Garden of Eden where if God comes you see God. You look out into the sky you could actually see where the thrones of the demons are. And you could actually see angels flying up and down. It was like living in an open vision. But it slowly began to fade and I realized it has to be maintained. There is a certain realm that is there. Words Are Pictures In The Spirit World One characteristic of the spirit realm is that every word is a picture. Part of the observations is that while in that realm whatever words that is spoken form an object. And after that the Lord began to show me what heaven is like. See what I was experiencing is what heaven was like. Like when I said the word chair, a chair would appear. Literally in the spirit you see a chair being formed in front of you. It is like in heaven you ask God, "I would like extra rooms to my mansion." In an instant it is there. I back this...

The short story is about how people handle death and the effect it has on a person. The short story circles about the main character Annie who sees her dead father´s ghost. In this essay there is an analysis and interpret the short story´s composition, supernatural elements, theme and the relationship between Annie and her father. The composition in the short story contains flashbacks because it jumps back and forth in time. In the short story there are some streams of consciousness, and that is why the chronological order has been unregulated. There is harmony between the start and the end. The use of flashbacks has an effect - it gives a full picture of the theme to understand the main character and her problems dealing with her father’s dead. It is a common element for a short story to have flashbacks. “The first time I saw my father after he died, I was in the shower, hair plastered with conditioner, when the water stuttered and turned cold. He was at the sink in front of the misted-up mirror with the tap running, his back to me. It was two weeks after his funeral. No Angel

...No Angel The short story No Angel is written by the Bernie McGill in 2010. She is an author who lives in Northern Ireland, where the story also takes place. It is from the anthrology The Best British Short Stories 2011. The story is about grief, loneliness and how to recover from a death of a loved one. People got different ways to move on, but no matter what, it is terribly painful to lose a loved one, because you suddenly are alone. On the one hand you recover by trying to forget about the pain the loss has brought, but on the other hand you want to remember the one who passed away, because of the fear of loneliness and because the death is hard to accept. Others don’t want to accept the fact that they’re gone and will never be here again, and thereby they find a rather special way to keep the memory of the lost person. They create the lost one(s) inside their head, and pretending they see the dead(s) as ghosts or angels. This makes them able to talk to them and get advices from their beloved, even though they are no longer here. This is the way our main character of No Angel is using to handle her sorrows of her family’s death. The main characters name is Annie. You get to know it when the father says “Have you forgotten what they did to your brother, Annie?...”(p. 3, l. 63). Annie has lost her brother and both of her parents and deals with being left on her own without them to support, guide and, most of all, love her. She still sees them after they’re dead as......

No Angel

...We all have different ways to deal with grief, longing and loneliness. In this essay I am going to analyze and interpret the short story “No Angel” by Bernie McGill from 2010. It’s a story writ-ten with a very unique spoken language and with an unusual composition, which I will de-scribe even further later in this essay. Additionally, I will make a characterization of the per-sons, get around the use of supernatural elements and in the end explain how I have inter-preted the short story. The story is written in a 1st person narrator, who is Annie – the main character. The spoken language is unique because the story takes place in contemporary Northern Ireland, and the writer has chosen to show the Irish dialect in the spoken language. The language, especially when the father speaks, contains a lot of slang and unusual ways to pronounce the words. An example of this, appears in this quotation: ““What’s that oul’ shite you’re listening to?” he said, and near put me off the road. A twitter of a laugh: “That would deave you,” and his arm reached out, and turned down the dial.” (Page 5, line 133-135). The fact that the short story is written from the narrative’s perspective, gives the reader an opportunity to feel like he is inside An-nie’s head. Her narrative language is not very formal; as an example she calls her father “Dad-dy”. The story begins in medias res, because the reader is thrown directly into the action when Annie sees her dead father for the first time in the...

Essay of the Angels

...Angel investments bear extremely high risk and are usually subject to dilution from future investment rounds. As such, they require a very high return on investment.[9] Because a large percentage of angel investments are lost completely when early stage companies fail, professional angel investors seek investments that have the potential to return at least 10 or more times their original investment within 5 years, through a defined exit strategy, such as plans for an initial public offering or an acquisition. Current 'best practices' suggest that angels might do better setting their sights even higher, looking for companies that will have at least the potential to provide a 20x-30x return over a five- to seven-year holding period.[10] After taking into account the need to cover failed investments and the multi-year holding time for even the successful ones, however, the actual effective internal rate of return for a typical successful portfolio of angel investments is, in reality, typically as 'low' as 20-30%.[11] While the investor's need for high rates of return on any given investment can thus make angel financing an expensive source of funds, cheaper sources of capital, such as bank financing, are usually not available for most early-stage ventures, which may be too small or young to qualify for traditional loans. Profile of investor community The term "angel" originally comes from Broadway where it was used to describe wealthy individuals who provided money for......

No Angel

...No Angel When you lose some of your beloved, it can be awfully difficult to move on with your own life. If they were a part of your everyday life, it's not abnormal to feel like something is missing, and a feeling like this can cause a confused mind. Some people move on like nothing has happened when a family member dies, but others don't know how to keep thinking straight. At times it can be dreadfully painful to think about dead people you used to love, and some people even envision the dead standing in front of them and think that they are actually able to have a conversation with them. "No Angel" is a short story written by Bernie McGill in 2011. The theme of the story is "the loss of beloved family members", and it shows an interesting example of a persons' life and thoughts after this person loses her nearest family members. "No Angel" is briefly about Annie, who is the protagonist of the story. Annie tries to live a normal and stereotypical life after her brother, mother and father pass away, but her father continuously appears in front of her after his death, and this makes it hard for Annie to live a normal life. Annie tells about her father's appearances through flashbacks. The plot of the story takes place in the 2000's, and is told by a first person narrator, Annie. The plot is written in chronological order, but there occur several flashback throughout the entire story. The story is set in in Northern Ireland, where McGill was born, and the environment there...

...emotion. There is no "right" way to grieve, there is no answer to how each one of us will heal from the feelings of sadness, anger, loss and loneliness. There are a lot of reasons to be in grief, but the most intense grief usually comes from the death of a love one. Feelings such as sorrow, sadness, guilt, regret, anxiety, fear and helplessness isn't uncommon to go through after you lost a loved one. There is no way to know how long the grief will go on. But overtime the intense grief and sorrow will subside. In 1969 Elizabeth Kübler-Ross introduced the 5 stages of grief: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I think we all can agree that these are stages we go through when we have lost a loved one. In the short story "No Angel" written by Bernie McGill, in 2010, our main character Annie, goes through grief and loneliness after she lost her father. The short story is written in first person narrative, we see the story through the main character's eyes whose name is Annie. The compositions is jumping in time between, present and flashbacks. The story starts in the middle of the story, media res. The first event is the first time Annie sees her father after his death. She sees him in the bathroom, where they are small talking. Right after this we jump right into a new flashback, which is the second time she sees her father after his death. Here we learn a bit more about the main character, we learn about how her mother and father used to take the train. We......

No Angel

...No Angel By Bernie McGill Be it family or friends, we are all going to lose someone that are close to us. It is inevitable, therefore a very natural part of our life and we all have to process the grief in our own different ways. Everyone has his or her own way of dealing with the loss of a loved one. Some want to get liberated from the pain and loss. They try to compensate from it by forgetting. Others want to keep the memory of the ones they have lost, because they fear the loneliness, which can make it difficult to let the lost ones go. In the short story “No Angel”, Bernie McGill processes this theme of grief. ”No Angel” is told in first person narrative in a limited point of view. This gives us detailed information about the main characters feelings and thoughts, but we only see the events from the characters point of view. This can be a disadvantage since the specific and circumstantial information given from the character can be unreliable. The main characters is a woman named Annie, whose father has recently passed away. Although her father technically is haunting her, she does not seem to be scared or angry in any way. We have to decide for ourselves whether the ghosts are real or merely a product of Annie’ mind. The composition is jumping in time with flashbacks and flash-forwards. Some of the telling is streams of consciousness, and for that reason, the chronological order has been unregulated. As an extension of this, the author tributes the short......
