Mentors in the sport world

A mentor is a person or friend who guides a less experienced person by building trust and expressing positive behaviours’. I am going to tell you a bit about my favourite mentors in the sport world and why I have chosen them.
The first mentor is Peter De-Villiers, the former Springboks rugby coach. The reason I have chosen him is mainly because he is true to himself and of the quotes he made. He believed in equal opportunity and bringing change. He wanted the players making decisions and playing the situation. One of his quotes that stood out for me was when he said `true measure of a man's character is how you react to what people say about you`. Peter De-Villiers
The second mentor is Alex Ferguson, the ex-manager at Manchester United. He is a focused person who knows how to manage his players and knows each of his players strengths and weaknesses so he knows how exactly to position them on the playing field. He is not only all about football but is also there for his players when they need guidance or advice. Ferguson himself was also a long-term thinker, investing in youth teams and proper scouting, rather than just buying the star players. He sold off famous players, often while still at their peak, and he experimented with younger, unproven players. Ferguson was managing highly talented, overpaid and not very bright teenagers and he developed a way of working that was part coach, part boss, part father figure.

The third mentor is Antonio Conte, the manager of Juventus in Italy. He believes he is the best manager in the world right now. Conte is mainly known for radiating reliability and consistency, and you are able to trust him and can feel secure with his judgement. He presents himself as someone who values control and precision and wants to be judged on the basis of his performance, rather than his appearance. My fourth mentor is Arsene Wenger, the manager of Arsenal in England. Arsene Wenger plays the roles of a manager, an innovator, a trainer, an educator and tries to be a role model and a friend. He uses the following skills to help him play those roles: Communication, knowledge of the sport, organisation, analysing, evaluation, tactics and the basics of sport science. Lots of people look up to him and admire his spirit and his success. He tries to set an example and get others to follow. He knows that people look up to him and he tries to keep a good reputation. He tries not to argue in public or cause a scene. He himself tries to stay calm and stay on top of things as he finds that this way he is able to do his job well and not let those that look up to him, down. He is able to communicate well as well as use tactics to help him solve problems. This is what helps him to be a good role model. Arsene Wenger

José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho
José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho was born 26 January 1963 in Setúbal, Portugal. His father was a Portuguese goalkeeper José Félix Mourinho. Mourinho began his career as a footballer, but never made it as a top player. He studied sports science at the Technical university of Lisbon and spent five years teaching in schools. After working as an assistant manager and a youth team coach, in 1992, he became an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson when he got a job at Sporting Club Portugal. Mourinho also followed Bobby Robson to FC Porto in Dec 1993. They developed a good working relationship with each other and Robson increasingly trusting the ideas of the young Mourinho. When Robson went to Barcelona in 1996, Mourinho followed, learning Catalan and becoming an important part of the set up. When Robson left, Mourinho stayed on, working with Louis van Gaal in a successful two years for Barcelona. Mourinho was also given responsibility for managing Barcelona B team, and Barcelona A for some cup competitions.
He is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in football. He is a very smart, confident, brave, arrogant, passionate, and master of communication. He says things as they are, if he thinks referee is being biased then he is going to say it out loud unlike many managers who are afraid to speak out. He is the best motivator ever and can bring out the best of an average squad. He is very organized and likes discipline and organization in the squad and sees it as his main vision to success.
The reason he inspires me is because through his whole career he has achieved much more than most professional managers by taking every team he managed to win the league. He has managed four different teams in four different countries and brought them all to winning at least two trophies. It shows that when he comes to a club he brings change. “Nowadays a coach has to be multi-faceted. He has to master a lot of areas. There are quite a lot of things I have to change in myself for me to even come close to José Mourinho. Firstly I would want to gain more confidence in myself which will let me express myself better. Taking risks, being brave and being able to say things as they are. Having the ability to communicate better with others and while doing that also gaining more knowledge. Being able to motivate not only myself but others as well, to have self-discipline and be organized.…...

...Mentoring Mentoring is something that is used every day in life. People are often mentors and do not even realize it. There are two different types of mentoring that can take place. The first is informal mentoring, an example of which would be directing someone to a classroom or helping someone understand an assignment. My mentor coached me through my adjustment period and continues to be there for any question I have or just to listen to me.
