Hum/176 Week 4

...Hum/176 8/19/2012 Lisa Prince Week 4 assignment Social media has taken over the world over the past few tears. From social media sites like twitter, facebook, and youtube many different companies, and people have all benefited from the use of social media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills......

Hum 176 Week 3 Question1

...HUM/176 Week 3 Assignment Hello, I hear so many good things and am so fascinated with what you can do with the Internet. Finding all this information so quickly must make your life very easy. But please tell me: how do you assess the value of all this information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? Also, I have heard the term “digital divide.” What exactly does it mean, and how do you think this divide could be bridged? Thank you for helping me to understand these issues! Best regards, Your friend Dear Friend, I just wanted to see if I can help you understand a little about the internet and answer some of the questions you had. In the beginning you had to have a phone line, but the big cable companies started to use the cable system to transfer the data making it faster and more reliable. Private companies would start-up web browsers and search engines, internet service providers and email; all quickly changed the landscape and the culture around us. Many people became rich and powerful, but along with them came the scammers and those that were less ethical. Because of them the reliability of what you were reading, viewing or watching became suspect. There was so much money to be made because the net had exploded into almost every household in America. You had asked how to check the reliability of what you are reading; there are many ways to do this. The simplest way is to look at the internet as a vast array...

Using the writings of each given in our class text or at the Websites below, make your case for the side you chose and against the other side. Very briefly, identify one (1) modern situation in the world where these issues are significant. Philosophers Debate Politics * Chapter 24 (pp. 768-9) * Hobbes: text at http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl302/texts/hobbes/leviathan-contents.html; summary at http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hobbes-moral/; also http://jim.com/hobbes.htm * Locke: text at http://www.thenagain.info/Classes/Sources/Locke-2ndTreatise.html; General background of the concept at http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/teachers/lesson_plans/pdfs/unit1_12.pdf The philosopher that I mostly agree with is John Locke. ...HUM 112 Week 1 Discussion 10/12/14 "Baroque Style" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:  * Listen to one (1) composition that demonstrates the qualities of the Baroque musical style. It may be from the Websites below or from this week’s Music Folder. Identify your choice, and describe it by relating key terms from the textbook to your selection. Explain what you like or admire about the work. Briefly, compare it to a modern soundtrack or song that evokes a similar mood.  AntionoVivaldi’s Four Seasons, is a group of four violin concertos in which sonnets were written to describe the seasons. I found Four Seasons Spring very refreshing. As I listened closely, I could hear sounds in the music that mimicked birds chirping, a brook, a breeze and a thunderstorm. All the sounds of spring are in the music and remind me of a beautiful spring day. The concerto begins in allegro and slows down and picks up again as if it is telling a story of spring. What I like most about the Four Seasons’ Spring is that I feel refreshed, renewed, everything that spring represents. After listening to all four of the concertos, I was able to relate to each season through the music. I also enjoy jazz music and I can sit and listen to the instruments and they sometimes sound like words that speak to your soul and spirit, soothing and refreshing, creating a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the......

I listened to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in its entirety. I’m not musically inclined and I do not have the ability to read or write music, however after listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 is Romantic more than classical. Although you can find some of both characteristics while listening like the frequent changes in the tempo that is typically found in Romantic music and the texture of Classical music which is essentially homophonic. While listening to the first movement, the gentle sounds of the instruments warming up softly with violins played with a structure rhythm and drums adding to the volume. The next two movements was at a faster pace. There was some emotion present in the way the music went from fast to slow as the volume build from soft to very loud. ...world. 2. How does the motion of the tectonic plates affect the geography? They can cause ridges which are formed when plates spread apart from another. When continental or oceanic plates collide, they create mountains. They also cause rifts and valleys and hills. 3. How does the motion of the tectonic plates affect the distribution of organisms? When landmasses separate due to the motion of tectonic plates it carries and distributes plants and animals around or when the plates collide or connect it allows the organisms to spread themselves from one landmass to another. Part 3 Earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis have all been linked to plate movement. Indicate how plate movement would create them. 1. Earthquakes: Tension and pressure build up as the plates slide past and bump into each one another and sometimes they get stuck together. But even after being stuck, the plates keep pushing and pulling against one another. Over time the pulling becomes too much and the plates break free from each other causing an earthquake. 2. Volcanoes: When the plates are spread apart from each other, the hot magma rises up and fills the space in between the plates. 3. Tsunamis: They are created by earthquakes that occur in a subduction zone which is a place where a plate is being forced down into the mantle by plate tectonic forces. The friction between places is enormous and cause the plates to get stuck. The stuck plate continues......

Hum 176 - Week 3

...Disney Movies are more than entertainment; they are a piece of pop culture that generations of children will remember forever. It all started in 1937 when Disney released its first feature length film, Snow White. To date, Disney has released more than 300 films. Each generation will have its own memory of their favorite Disney movies. For instance, any child born in the last 15 years will remember Toy Story. It was released in 1995 and followed by Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3. Disney really made an impact on kids with Toy Story. It was a wonderful story about a boy and the friendship between his two toys, a lovable, stuffed cowboy named Woody (voice by Tom Hanks), and an astronaut toy named Buzz Light-year (voice by Tim Allen). Today, Toy Story and the characters are a big part of Disneyland Amusement Parks. There are Toy Story rides that excite kids of all ages. It seems with every Disney movie launch there are mass toy sales and fast food restaurants selling “Happy Meals’ with Disney movie character toys. It is almost impossible to avoid the media and advertising explosion after a Disney movie release. What is nice about Disney movies is that parents can feel good about their kids watching them because Disney represents “wholesome.” A parent can be assured that the content of the movie will be age appropriate for their child. Disney movies are an icon in American pop culture. What Disney movie do you remember the most?...

...Analyze, Critique, and Discuss The Gladiator HUM/150 It has been said that a gladiator is a warrior, one who was a slave or prisoner, who competed in different gladiator events. Gladiators would fight in rings and be pit up against animals, or other gladiators. These fight usually would consist of fighting to the death. The fate of the gladiators lives was often derived from the unanimous decision of the crowd. (The Roman Gladiator) Usually if a Gladiator was victorious and took the lives of many men, he would be awarded a wooden sword that would signify their freedom. How iconic was it for director Ridley Scott to direct a film by David Franzoni, to depict exactly what it was to be a gladiator. From the infamous fights that took place in the Roman Coluseum, to the melancholy dramatic feeling that overcame Maximus (Russell Crowe) as his family were killed through the treacherous actions of his rival Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Gladiator begins with the battle with Romanian Army under the leadership of Emperor Marcus Aurelius against the Barbarian Tribe of Germania. This scene showed many striking points. For instance take the scene and where it takes place. Both armies are dressed in the traditional Armor helmets with steal chest plates and large shields. The uniforms are made with immaculate detail. The swords the bows, axes, and all the other weapons look as real as the weapons that were used in real life. The ash and corps infested battlefield......

...Week 1 assignment editorial blog entry April 14, 2012 HUM 111 Global warming has become a great concern amongst many people throughout the world because people are finally starting to realize that through all this horrible pollution we are killing are planet more and more rapidly each and every day. According to ("Global Warming And Climate Changes", 2012) our planet is hotter today than it has been in two thousand years. If the current trends continue, by the end of the century our planet may become too hot for human civilization to live on. We (the U.S.) are driving these climate changes by burning fossil fuels, such as, coal and oil. Coal fired power plants are the one thing that produces the most pollution within the U.S. I admire what the Greenpeace organization does because they are trying to get factories/companies to stop burning coal and other fossil fuels and start a clean energy movement. I think companies need organizations like this to make them realize that their processes are really destroying our planet at a rapid rate and something really needs to be done to conserve some of the natural resources and not destroy our planet so quickly. Not only are America’s coal-burning plants destroying our planet, but they are also making our children sick, poisoning our waters and air, and killing tens of thousands of innocent people every year. Again, according to ("Global Warming And Climate Changes", 2012) over the next few years Greenpeace will be doing a......
