The Negatives of Social Networking

Ninety four percent of American teenagers maintain a Facebook account (Sterling). In this modern day and age, society has created new means of communicating and interacting via the internet. Instant messaging, strangers and “friends”, likes and favorites; One has now entered the virtual world of social networking, where information and photos of anyone and everyone are available at one’s fingertips . Social media refers to the interaction among people via the internet in which they create and share information. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat just a few networks that teenagers constantly check, update, and gossip about everyday. As a teenager myself, I experience the effects of social media first hand. A walk in the park with friends turns into a photo shoot for a new profile picture or a debate over what to tweet. Social Networking changes the way teens interact with each other and how they interact with society in general. Although it useful for communicating and sharing information, Social Media’s negative influences outweigh its positive influences.
Silence at the dinner table, procrastinating on homework, and checking one’s phone instead of exercising are all negative effects of social media. People who use Social Media feel required to maintain their profiles and constantly check newsfeeds in order to stay up to date with what their friends are doing. Often times people won't even realize that they have been scrolling the newsfeed for thirty plus minutes. Time can be a main problem in all aspects of life and because of what social media secretly mandates in teens and members of the community of Social Networking, a significant amount of precious time is put towards it. According to Business insider, Americans spend an average of thirty seven minutes per day on…...

How Social Media Is Changing the Way We Communicate

...it pains me to admit, I am an avid user of all of these social networks. It is interesting to think that there once was a time when writing letters, using only home phones or physically going to see a person were the only means of communication, a time that recent generation children will only learn about from reading history books, or hearing from their families. Today I am going to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of social networks. The good being origins and advantages, the bad being disadvantages and the ugly being the dangers of social networking. In today’s society, where technology is the driving force for almost everything, there is no escaping social networking. We have all heard of these social networking outlets, but they were not the first in the business. According to an article A Brief History of Social Media, ‘the first social networking website was SixDegrees which let people make profiles and connect with friends in 1997. This kind of interactive, social web application style became popularly known as “Web 2.0” and it really gained momentum with Friendster around 2002, followed by MySpace (2004 – 2006) and then Facebook (2007 -> ).’ In the social networking industry, many have tried and many have......

How Social Media Makes Society

...How Social Media Makes Society Let us take a trip into digital cyberspace and see what we will find. It is a never ending wonderland of bytes of data never before seen by men of different walks of life. Yes, dear reader, we can discover a whole new world in this digital frontier. However, is it worth it to venture the digital landscape if we could find out everything we ever needed to know on the social media landscape? Yes, it is. And in the end, it may be better to find out information outside of social media since social media leads to a possibility of spreading false information, a lack of privacy in one’s daily life, and a facilitation of endangering children through harmful social media sites. All in all, Social Media is more likely to do more evil for the society than it does justice. Forms of digital communication over the internet, such as social media, have become increasingly popular in information transmission since the dawn of the internet in the 1960s (Museum of Science and Industry). Today as of 2013, over 50% of people worldwide receive their information over common social media mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube (Kidwali and Imperatore). Mediums such as radio, television, and print publication have slowly dropped in use. With this rapid increase in information being spread over social media, any individual with a decent understanding of the English language and a terminal to the greater World Wide Web can become just as credible as any......

How Technology and Social Media Control Children and Adolescents

...Hernandez Jeffery Runyon ENG122 December 11, 2013 How Technology and Social Media Control Children and Adolescents Incredibly many people look at their phones throughout the day to see if they have a text-message, email, notification from social media, missed calls, or simply just because it has become an addiction. Technology has been changing over the years, and new apps and newer upgrades for electronic devices are being developed. High tech is advancing at an incredible rate. Consider how technology has expanded and evolved in the last ten years. How to manage this new phenomenon was not taught to us as children because it did not exist. Many children and adolescents born in the 20th century cannot imagine their lives without TV, smart phones, computers, tablets, or iPods and many other devices; youth have technology surrounding them. As a result, many of the young people raised in the world of technology do not have the same level of emotional skills of those ten or more years ago. Adolescents and children depend on the Internet more than on themselves. They no longer have the same innovativeness. Obesity and cyber bulling has increased over the years. More suicides have occurred. Those who are exposed to violent video games, movies and TV programs have shown aggression. However, parents do not realize how those devices affect their child’s development. Social media already affects many adults; now think about how strongly modern technology affects toddlers and......

How Social Media Can Affect Privacy and Employment

...How Social Media Can Affect Privacy and Employment The right to privacy is a value in American culture; however there is no Constitutional right that protects an individual’s privacy. Everyone has an opinion to what privacy means to them; personally I feel that privacy is the information about myself or my family that I do not want others to know. When individuals choose to expand their space or allow things to become public on the internet or digital media, they are allowing themselves to be viewed by others, and therefore relinquishing privacy. When individuals post images and opinions online they are unaware that the post may limit future employment opportunities. People need to be conscious of the possible impact that social and digital media may have. I agree that privacy should be a personal choice to determine. It is our responsibility to post information about ourselves that represents who we are as a whole person. How an individual portrays themselves should be the same online as it is off. When applying for a new job you are prepared for the drug testing, and the background check; however it never crossed your mind that this potential employer may also run a check on your Facebook page, Twitter page or any social media groups you may be associated with, “75% of recruiters are required by their companies to do online research of candidates, and some 70% of recruiters in the United States report that they have rejected candidates because of information online”......

Social Media or Anti-Social Media?

...Social Media or Anti-social Media? In 2013 a study found that teenagers were experiencing a decline in intimate friendships as they chose Facebook over face-to-face communications. The image above displays a young girl on her computer; she seems to be focusing intensely on her computer screen. She is wearing a black jacket with black eye shadow and she looks exhausted, which is associated usually with emo teens or depression. The title on the image contradicts purpose and meaning of what social-media means to most people. Social media was administered to help keep friends and families in contact from all over the world, but according surveys taken, social media is actually stopping people from communicating face-to-face. Why has social media made people more antisocial rather than making them social? Why has social media replaced outdoor activities and face to face conversations almost completely? How are parents or adults stepping up to help make their children or friends more sociable? Why is social media an escape outlet for people’s emotions? How does it contribute to making people anti-social? What are reasons why social media can make a positive impact on our daily lives? The girl’s black eye shadow and black hoodie portray a state of loneliness and depression, proposing that social media is causing our youth to be depressed or anti-social. Aside from the fact that the girl is on a social media site she stares at the screen with a blank expression. Conforming to......

How Social Media Is Revolutionizing the Apparel Industry?

...Running head: HOW SOCIAL MEDIA IS REVOLUTIONIZING THE APPAREL INDUSTRY1 “How Social Media Is Revolutionizing the Apparel Industry” Alaa El-Bially Johns Hopkins Carey Business School HOW SOCIAL MEDIA IS REVOLUTIONIZING THE APPAREL INDUSTRY 2 Social media is a buzzword. Social media is “like teen sex. Everyone wants to do it. No one actually knows how. When finally done, there is a surprise it’s not better”, says Avinash Kaushik, co-Founder of Market Motive Inc and the Digital Marketing Evangelist for Google. In just a few short years, social media has revolutionized the way people communicate and share information, turning conversations into 140-words blips and making e-mail- the original electronic communication tool- seem quaint. In the business perspective, social media creates a kinship between the brand and its consumers and prospective consumers, which drives purchase intent and word of mouth. In this context, I will address the role of social media in revolutionizing the apparel industry as a business model, and its challenges and projections. Why Is Now the Right Time for Social Media? Growth & Interest Are High. A recent survey from eConsultancy shows that social networks and blogs are the fourth most popular activities online, (ahead of personal email, even) and that 10 percent of all time spent on the Internet is spent on social media sites. How Will the Advancement of Cyber Security Affect Communication on Social Media?

...Cyber Security topic because it is a big concern for me how my information (the data) is stored online. This is a topic that everybody worries about because nobody knows where the cloud is or who has access to it. It seems to me that every week there are new headlines about hackers bringing an organization to its knees by doing things such as stolen funds, bad publicity, and embarrassing revelations that are on the front page news. Then I ask myself, how can we protect ourselves from these issues? I guess the best protection is for both ends to implement plans and procedures or maybe the best way to demonstrate the needs for those procedures is to perform a Cyber Security audit and implement the resulting recommendations. Moreover, work in conjunction with IT departments can ensure that implementing the resulting recommendations will make both sides of the social media communication more secure. Like most criminals, hackers look for easy targets. If your media has simple security issues that are easy to exploit, hackers will dive right in. If your infrastructure is strong on your end, hackers will become frustrated and move on to the next easy mark. Furthermore, in these days it is almost impossible to be in an online business with an organization that does not collect or hold personal identifying information like names, addresses, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or other account numbers. So, how comprehensive is Cyber Security if it cannot......
