Florida Summers

Each summer my entire family on my mothers’ side piles into a packed conversion van, a mini van, and an SUV and travel the 495.8 miles from Maiden, North Carolina to the Royal Floridian hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida. (Mapquest Maps) The following week is filled with excitement, relaxation, and like most other families, a little tension too, but most importantly, bonding. My family has done this the week of the 4th of July every year for the past 20+ years. Everyone in my family knows it is not acceptable to skip the annual family vacation. I am eighteen years old, and I have been to Florida eighteen times thus far in my life. It is a tradition. Especially after working full time jobs and striving through schoolwork for nine months, everyone is ready for that little break where everyone has that place where they go to escape the pressures and worries of life. There is always that one spot that can soothe all of your problems and trouble times of stress. Each time we go, more and more aspects of the trip take on ritualistic, almost sacred, significance. Indeed, going to Florida is a tradition, and one that I have come to cherish very much. While the week holds many events that change us as a family, the car ride down there is the most memorable. This specific car ride challenges us as a family and pushes us to put aside our differences and learn to accommodate others particular personalities. The main thing I will always remember from this long drive is how my grandparents interacted with each other. One thing one should know about my grandparents is that they are the exact opposite of one another. The main one focused on this trip is their body temperature. Everyone in my family receives a good laugh over witnessing them bicker over how cold my grandmother keeps the A/C on and freezes my grandfather, who is the type of person who…...

Summer

...It was the first day of summer and I was so excited I got to relax until 10:00am. I was woken up by a delicious smell I wasn’t quite sure what it was but it smelled extremely good. “Are you awake?” mom asked. I replied loudly, “Yes mother.” She told me to hurry down because we needed to discuss something. So I gotten up showered, comb my hair, put my clothes on and headed down the stairs. “Morning mom,” I said. Mom was down here all alone cooking breakfast Pancakes, eggs, grits, and sausage. “Yummy,” I said. Everything looked so good because mom always cooked everything she made from scratch. So I got me a small portion of the breakfast and sat at the table. Mom came along and joined me. She explained to me that I’ll be staying with my dad this summer because she have an important job she had to attend. I wasn’t excited about this because I thought this summer was going to be the summer that mom and I was going to be able to spend time together. I had to be understanding because mom was a travel nurse and when hospitals are short of employers they call people like her to come out to work. So she told me after breakfast pack my clothing she was taking me to the airport my plane leave at 4:00pm. Dad stays in Miami, Florida so I had to pack clothing for that type of weather; which it’s always sunny down that way. So I packed all my shorts, tank top shirts, bathing suits, and sandals. Thirty minutes later “Are you ready?” mom called. I wasn’t ready to leave her but I guess......

Summer

...the summer was hot From an astronomical view, the equinoxes and solstices would be the middle of the respective seasons,[1][2] but a variable seasonal lag means that the meteorological start of the season, which is based on average temperature patterns, occurs several weeks later than the start of the astronomical season.[3] According to meteorologists[4][5],summer extends for the whole months of June, July, and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January, and February in the southern hemisphere. Under meteorological definitions, all seasons are arbitrarily set to start at the beginning of a calendar month and end at the end of a month.[6] This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season with the longest (and warmest) days of the year, in which daylight predominates. The meteorological reckoning of seasons is used in Austria, Denmark and the former USSR; it is also used by many in the United Kingdom, where summer is thought of as extending from mid-May to mid-August. In Ireland, the summer months according to the national meteorological service, Met Éireann, are June, July and August. However, according to the Irish Calendar summer begins 1 May and ends 1 August. School textbooks in Ireland follow the cultural norm of summer commencing on 1 May rather than the meteorological definition of 1 June. From the astronomical perspective, days continue to lengthen from equinox to solstice......

Florida Alligators

...Florida Alligators…… Are They Really That Scary????? By: Krista Source: Me with the help of Florida and some alligators My First Time What would you do if you walked into a store and saw three alligators lying on the floor? Well that is exactly what happened to me, and like every other human being, I freaked out at first. At this store you were able to hold an alligator for five dollars. After watching my mom and best friend hold one I thought that I couldn’t miss this opportunity, and I’m glad I didn’t. About Alligators! How many teeth do you have? Well, alligators have 80 teeth. Their jaws are very special. You probably think that they are stronger than anything. But you’re wrong an alligators jaw is strong enough to close on something big, but if something is holding it together it is not strong enough to open. Alligators have many special facts about them. The black bumps around an alligator’s mouth are called nerves. Therefore an alligator can feel every single touch. Alligators are very sensitive because they spend a lot of their time underwater. If a gust of wind came and the alligator’s mouth was open the wind would act its senses and the jaw would automatically snap shut. Alligators have two sets of eyes. One set is for under water and the other is for above water. An alligator can stay under water for approximately 40 minutes to 2 hours if needed. When they are under water there heart rate slows down to 3 to 5 beats per minute. Everglade......

Florida

...Florida The other night I was sitting by the blazing fire eating a juicy orange, and the sweet smell reminded me of my vacations to Florida over winter break. I will never forget the fresh smell of the air when we stepped off the airplane. I could see my grandparents from across the crowded airport. I would always be so excited to step on the soft, white, sandy beach. The first thing I would do is change into my bathing suit and run out to the beach. My sister and I would spend the day splashing in the salty water, until we were too tired to keep our heads above the water. Then we would lie on the soft damp sand and take a nap. It felt so good to have the bright sun blazing down on me. My favorite thing to do was build gigantic sand castles on the beach. My sister and I would have contests to see who could build the tallest sand castle. The grains of sand glistened in the sun like a diamond ring. I will never forget how the gigantic orange trees towered over me. Every day my grandpa would pick me an orange; they were so juicy! Every time I think about an orange, my mouth waters, and I think of how sweet they taste. Normally bedtime was a problem for me, but in Florida I fell right to sleep every night. I would leave the windows wide open, and I would fall asleep to the waves crashing on the sandy beach. I could hear the birds chirping outside my window along with the rustling of the wind. In the mornings we would walk to this little breakfast place......

...My perfect summer I never imagined a wonderful summer as the one I have spent in Logan. Global Academy 2012 gave me the opportunity to experience the most unforgettable moments of my life. Despite the cultural shock, the lonely I felt at the beginning and all de embarrassing moments I had, Logan have been the perfect place for me to grow as a person, to improve my English, to make new friends, and to become more independent. I just can describe this summer as my best summer ever, my perfect summer. My most memorable moment in Logan was the ropes course because I was doing really challenging things, things that I never thought I could do. After I achieve my goals at the ropes course and overcame all the challenging things I felt a great satisfaction and self-realization. At the beginning I was shock by American culture but as soon as I started understanding it I enjoy every single moment in Logan. I really loved my first academic track excursions. I went to a restaurant in a small town called Ogden and I tried the Mormon Muffin, it was so delicious. I also had a great time at the Independence Day celebration at Rommie Stadium, the fireworks were amazing. I had never seen so many fireworks in one night. I was so amazed and I took a lot of pictures with my camera. These experiences gave me the opportunity of talk with native speakers and improve my English skills. Florida Everglades

...The Florida Everglades is the name of the area that consists of subtropical wetlands on the southern tip of Florida. At one point, it extended from Lake Okeechobee 100 miles south to Florida Bay. Now, however, it is only 1/3 of its glory, since the Everglades National Park (what is left of the Everglades) only currently covers 1,509,000 acres at the southern tip of Florida. The two biggest abiotic components that are unique to the Everglades are weather and location. The weather plays a huge part because of the precipitation The weather is known to be warm, with a distinct wet and dry season. Despite having some dry periods, the area is known to have 40-70 inches of rain and that rainfall is what drains into Lake Okeechobee. Location is important because it is what determines the flow of water. Southern Florida is very flat and because the terrain is so flat, the rainwater that overflows from Lake Okeechobee during the rains is what creates a wide, shallow, slow-moving river that flows through the marshes. The ecosystems that make up the Everglades have been described as “both fragile and resilient” (Toops). Take for example, the Florida apple snail, which are an amphibious fresh water mollusk (Whitney). Apple snails must lay their eggs on sawgrass stalks around six inches above the water line because they are intolerant of being submerged for long periods of time. In that case, when the eggs hatch, this allows the young snails to enter the water quickly. If......

Prohibition in Florida

...Prohibition in Florida Your Name Professor Name and Class Prohibition is defined as the act of forbidding something by law. In Florida the prohibition alcohol encountered many issues due to the close proximity of neighboring countries and the illegal import of the alcohol. Florida’s coastal line was one of the most prominent factors in its battle during the prohibition of alcohol days. The thought of prohibition of alcohol was proposed to the citizens, by the government and the church as an attempt to reduce crime, improve health, and protect the women and children in society (www.floridahistory.org). The government officials went into the neighborhoods and town meetings and told the families and homeowners that prohibiting alcohol would make their neighborhoods safer and the pastors preached about alcohol and the bible to their congregations instilling the fear of displeasing God. The whites would be concerned of their safety and power and restricted blacks from alcohol whether they were free or still in slavery due to their concerns of having less power or being ineffective in slave ownership. In any effort, their attempts to abolish alcohol led to many more illegal operations and the people of the Florida are became very creative about finding ways to obtain the illegal alcohol. The 18th amendment was established and declared the sale, production, and transport of alcohol illegal. The amendment became law on January 17th, 1920. The advocates of the......

Florida Air

...Florida Air, Inc. 1. Evaluate Florida Air’s search for capital. What, if any, key mistakes were made? -Dan failed to fully utilize high profile networks of Scott and Henry, who were both graduates of an Ivy League School (Did Scott graduate from Ivy League School?). Also, Dan did not try to reach out to his network he established while he was buying and selling airplanes. Even if there was no one interested in their direct network, perhaps someone in their network knew someone who might be interested. Scott later contacted his 100 alumni later but rather passively; instead of calling to actively initiate a conversation, he mailed out information. -Also, the team initially decided that the best group to approach for capital would be the ones with airline experience to appreciate the benefits of their idea. However, we think the investors do not necessarily needed to have that airline experience, as long as they saw potential and some benefits of the venture. By selecting that "best pool" we believe the team limited themselves to a small group of potential investors. -The team did not do enough research and did not come up with a well-structured business plan. When potential investor candidate Jason Daulton had asked seemingly basic questions about how Flordia air will handle maintenance costs, scheduling, fuel efficiency economics, underlying......

...terrain” and is susceptible to a sinkhole event. The most damage from sinkholes tends to occur in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. In west-central Florida and elsewhere, their increasing frequency of sinkholes corresponds to the accelerated development of ground-water and land resources. Most of Florida is prone to sinkhole formation because it is underlain by thick carbonate deposits that are susceptible to dissolution by circulating ground water. Florida’s principal source of freshwater, ground water, moves into and out of storage in the carbonate aquifers (most productive). Development of these ground-water resources (municipal, industrial and agricultural water supplies) creates regional ground-water-level declines that play a role in accelerating sinkhole formation, thereby increasing susceptibility of the aquifers to contamination from surfacewater drainage. Such interactions between surface-water and ground-water resources in Florida play a critical and complex role in the long-term management of water resources and ecosystems of Florida’s wetlands SINKHOLES ARE A NATURALLY OCCURRING IN FLORIDA LANDSCAPE The exposed land mass that constitutes the Florida peninsula is only part of a larger, mostly submerged carbonate platform that is partially capped with a sequence of relatively insoluble sand and clay deposits. Summer Vacation

...My favorite summer vacation was when my Father took me to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. What made it even more memorable was the fact that it was my very first time on an airplane. I cannot recall another time in my life when I experienced so much joy. That trip to Universal Studios was the first time my Father and I actually did something together, just the two of us and was something brought me close to my Father. In this essay I will tell you about my plane ride over there, what I did right when I got there, and about my time at Universal Studios. I can still remember how excited I was before take off, I mean it felt like forever while we sat in the plane waiting to take off. Just all the anticipation that was inside of me had just made the wait even longer for me. Finally, I heard the pilot say 'prepare for take off'. When I heard those words I was so overjoyed I could hardly contain myself. That rush I got once the plane took off was an experience like no other. The plane ride was about hours long and I enjoyed every minute of it. Little did I know, that was less than half of the fun I was going to have at Orlando. After we got off the airplane, we rented a car and drove to my Uncle Joe?s house. We finally got there and then we all went out to eat dinner. We went to some Italian restraunt and boy was it good. To this day, I have never tasted anything as good as the Veal Picata I had that day. I ate...

Florida Power

...Florida Power and Light Summary The deregulation of the energy industry has offered Florida Power and Light the opportunity to adjust its internal structure in an effort to provide better products and services to consumers. The adjustments and creation of different management programs have aided in guiding FPL from being a local utility company to a national energy services enterprise. Analysis The energy industry is maybe one of the most stable industries in the market. Much like any other industry it has its strengths and weaknesses, but in terms of consumer demand it’s safe to say that the energy industry will be around for quite some time. If we look at technicalities it is also safe to say that energy resource refinement and utilization has been around since the beginning of time. The energy industry is one of enormous depth because of the many different resource types and respective uses. There are two more common sides of this industry; one could even imply these are the two main types, power and lighting as well as oil and gas. It is true that in many cases when we refer to oil and gas it is an industry in its own, much like power and lighting. However, when we understand all that is included in the energy industry we begin to realize and understand that the two latter industries are in essence offspring of the energy industry. Because electricity and fuel are created differently we separate the two and create industries specific to each. However,......
