Environment - how can you help to protect it?

Environment is an important part of human life and a healthy environment is a must for human existence. Therefore, it is crucial that we take care of our surroundings and help nature maintain ecological balance so that we could hand over to the coming generations the environment as we found it, if not any better. Our planet is changing. There are a lot of things that affect our planet in a bad way but the good news is that everyone can help to reduce them and do their bit for the environment. While exploring six important topics that affect our community : Electricity (Energy), Pollution, Food, Water, Rubbish, Rainforest, I'll present the damage and a list of ways that we can all contribute to help our planet get better. 1. Electricity Energy is everywhere. We use energy to move the mouse for a computer, to jump and shout and walk and run. It takes energy to power a light bulb, and the light that the bulb gives off is also a form of energy. Other forms of energy include heat, chemical energy, gravitational energy and nuclear power. Electricity is a form of energy and this is what powers the TV, the kettle, dishwasher, hairdryer, toaster, remote control, mobile phone, fridge, stereo, electric toothbrush, and more. Our growing need for energy is one of the problems facing the world today, because producing electricity also produces our next topic - pollution. How to help? When you’re using electricity think about where it comes from and how you can use less to take the strain off of the environment- here are some simple ways to make a big difference: • On or Off? Leaving televisions, stereos and computers on standby with the little red light showing still uses up electricity, even though they might look like they're turned off. To stop this you can turn them off at the wall. • Lights out! Turning lights off when you're not in the room can save a lot of energy.

• Keep cool! The fridge is an important part of the kitchen, it keeps food fresh, cool and healthy! But it takes a lot of energy to keep cool, so help it by not leaving the fridge door open or putting hot things inside. • Harness the sun’s energy - An increasing number of people are fitting solar panels to their houses. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels create electricity from sunlight, which can then be used to power their homes. Solar heating panels make hot water, reducing the need for electricity or gas to heat water or run the central heating system. 2. Pollution An essential problem of the 21st century is the world pollution. Currently the environment is so much contaminated that urgent measures should be taken. The single individual cannot be blamed for the world pollution; however every person should take care of his habitat. In addition , it is vital that environmental issues should be treated internationally. There are trivial things that we can do individually to save the environment. In making some small changes in the way we do in daily activities, we can help to protect our environment from being polluted. The first thing that we can do is by walking or riding our bike instead of driving whenever possible. In doing so we can reduce the air pollution. Also fumes from the vehicles contain carbon monoxide which is very dangerous to human life. It can cause headache, nausea, the shortness of breath and dizziness. If we can reduce the content of carbon monoxide in the air, for sure we can also protect our earth from being polluted. At the same time we can maintain our health. As we cycling we inhale fresh air which is good for our respiratory system. Seventy percent of the Earth is covered by oceans. Oceans are vital for the life on Earth. They provide homes for millions of plants and animals, provide people with food and help regulate the climate. But now they are a big dumping ground for tons of toxic waste. Most big cities pour their waste into seas and rivers. For a long time people did not realize the danger. The first alarm came from Japan: sixty people died because they have eaten polluted fish. The Baltic sea is a special case. Because it is such a small sea, it becomes dirty very easily. 250

rivers run into the Baltic. There are hundreds of factories on these rivers and millions of people live along them. Seven industrial countries surround the Baltic. Once we have polluted the sea, it is very difficult to filter it. Fortunately, all the countries realized the problems and co-operated to solve ecological problems. I would like to elaborate some practical measures which must be taken in order to improve the ecological situation: the factories and plants must be removed from cities; green zones must be created; pollution control systems must be introduced; purifying systems for cleaning and trapping harmful substances must be widely used; almost everything is recyclable today - recycling is a great way to reduce waste. We need clean air to breathe and pure water to drink. We can't get all these things by ourselves. We live in community so we can solve our problems only working together. A lot of public organizations have been established. One of them is Green Peace which was formed in 1971 with its Head-quarters in Amsterdam. The area of operation is 25 countries worldwide. Its objectives are to protect wild life and atmosphere, to prevent disposal of toxic waste and nuclear tests. But all is not lost. We can all learn a few little tips to help protect the environment and its future: How to help? • Don't drop litter. Birds and animals can mistake litter for food. Litter can end up in rivers and block drains, or in the sea and be eaten by fish. Also, some litter will stay around for thousands of years! • Save it! All of the electricity saving tips in the above section will also help reduce pollution. • On your bike. Instead of taking the car get your bicycle out or take a walk. • Pleasing products. Many household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals which are washed down the drain. Encourage your friends to buy eco-friendly products or even make your own from natural substances like vinegar and lemon juice.

3. Food We can’t live without it! With more than 7 billion people on earth the demand for food has never been bigger. The first question is - where is all this food coming from? Our food comes from all over the world - your green beans might come from Egypt, coffee maybe from Africa, perhaps your bananas have travelled from Ecuador and apples flew across the Pacific Ocean from New Zealand. All of these ‘food miles’ amounts to a lot of transport and transport means fuel and fuel means pollution. What else does food need to grow? Water and good soil! Plants and trees that give us fruit need to eat too. Some countries and farms add pesticides and insecticides to food to keep away pests and insects. These chemicals can sometimes be harmful to wildlife and their habitats and sometimes to humans too. West countries eat 7 times more than people in poorer countries. And one thing we eat a lot of is meat and dairy food. Meat comes from animals, they also need food and water. Nowadays most farmers use a more practical and fast method to breed the animals and this occurs to have bad influence on our lives. How to help? • Meat Free Mondays are an easy and effective way to cut down on meat. Make one or even two of your days meat-free. • Eat organic. Organic foods have had no insecticides and pesticides added to them which makes them a bit more natural and healthy. Eating organic food reduces how many chemicals are made and spread across the countryside. • Washing. Always wash your hands before eating to prevent the spread of invisible bad stuff like bacteria and chemicals. It’s also good to wash fruit and vegetables before eating or cooking. 4. Water Getting water is so easy that you’d be mistaken for thinking that there was an endless supply. But the world has a water shortage. 70% of the world is covered in water - we

should call our planet ‘ocean’ not ‘earth’! But most of this water is salt water, leaving only a small percentage of fresh drinking water. Countries including Spain, Italy, Peru, China and South Africa actually import water from exporting countries such as the US, Australia and Argentina. A staggering 1.1 billion people on earth have no access to clean drinking water. This global shortage is predicted to get worse as global temperatures rise. There are many simple ways that we cam reduce our water use: How to help? • Morning habits. We brush our teeth twice a day and by turning the tap off while we brush we can save 5-10 liters of water. • Rain Gain. Collecting rainwater in a water butt in your garden is a great way of collecting and reusing the water to keep plants healthy in the summer. • Shower time. Our daily hygiene is very important. By setting yourself a challenge to cut down your shower time by 1 or 2 minutes could help the environment a lot. 5. Rubbish We throw away unwanted food, glass bottles, plastic bottles, cans, wrappers, paper and cardboard. Many of these things are made up of natural resources such as trees, coal, oil and aluminum and one day some of these resources will be used up completely. Do you recycle at home and at school? Why recycle? Well, this takes us back to the topic of energy. Recycling glass, paper, cardboard and plastic should save the energy it would take to make new paper, glass bottles and plastic containers. How to help? Thinking more about what we waste helps to protect the environment by saving energy, reducing pollution, cutting costs and preserving our natural resources. • Sort it out! Not all of our recycling is taken by helpful dustmen. Choose everything that could be reused and place it in the special areas for recycling. Don't mix it with the useless things. • Recycle Bank. Some councils don’t collect plastics or cardboard but there is always

somewhere nearby with big recycling banks where you can take them. • Fashion Statement. Give any unwanted clothes to charity shops or to a Salvation Army recycling bank. A lot of our unwanted clothes go to the homeless to keep them warm or alternatively, the clothes are sent to developing countries. • Packaging. Packaging is a big problem for the environment because once the product is open you don’t need it and it’s thrown out or, if it’s lucky, recycled. So avoid buying products that have a lot of paper and plastic around them. 6. Rainforests (Deforestation) Rainforests are valuable habitats. About half of all the species of animals and plants in the world live in rainforests and thousands of rainforest plants contain substances that can be used in medicines. Rainforests are also important because the huge number of plants and trees there provide us with oxygen and help to regulate the world's climate and atmosphere. This is why they are often referred to as the ‘lungs’ of the earth. Yet despite their value, big areas of rainforest are destroyed every year, and this is called deforestation. Rainforests now only cover 6% of the world as we cut down the trees for materials such as paper and wood and use the land for farming. How to help? • Good wood. Tropical hardwoods such as teak and mahogany are grown in rainforests and take hundreds of years to grow so avoid any products made with these woods. It is better have products made with pine, beech, ash or oak. These trees don’t come from the rainforest and can be more easily replaced as they grow a lot faster. • Save trees. Save trees by recycling your own paper. If you are buying paper, buy recycled paper, whether it is writing paper or toilet paper!

On a broader scale, ecosystems around the world can be abbreviated as TREES: • Teach others about the importance of the environment and how they can help save rainforests. • Restore damaged ecosystems by planting trees on land where forests have been cut down. • Encourage people to live in a way that doesn't hurt the environment. • Establish parks to protect rainforests and wildlife • Support companies that operate in ways that minimize damage to the environment.

In conclusion, there are a lot of factors that influence the environment in a harmful way but with a little effort from each of us we can make the world that we live in a better place. Following some simple rules on daily basis just cannot ruin our schedule in any way. Give it all a thought and start thinking green!

What Can We Do (to Help) in Our Environment

...What Can We Do with Our Environment? In the course of today’s situation regarding our environment and health welfare, it is indeed clear and unarguable that except nobody, we all must be concerned. The interconnections among all living and non-living elements in this planet satisfactorily satisfies the question “Why should I be concerned with the environment and health of other people?” Basically, people can leave with a poor and unhealthy environment, but believe me or not, they’ll die young; or should I say, WE’LL die young. Because in the context of today’s environmental and health situations, we undisputedly have unsatisfactory conditions of these. According to studies, about 50% of our forest lands have already been converted into commercial, residential, industrial and other purposes. Coastal resources have been suffering from the vast effects of Climate Change. I tell you, this isn’t a joke. Environmental issue is never a joke, because it can compromise huge things such as human lives. Millions of people die every year because of storms and typhoons. This can be accounted to the unstoppable flooding due to the deforestations that took huge number of trees in the mountains; resulting to the direct flow of water from mountain ridges to lowlands. Many people suffer from hunger because of continuously low catch of fish from the sea. This can be attributed to illegal fishing practices such as cyanide and dynamite fishing, which turns out to destroy the coral reefs and......

What Can Be Done to Help Save the Earth's Environment this essay, many of which can be executed by any one. Environmental problems have become so complex that many individuals feel they can have no effect on them. Problems like oil spills, hazardous waste, loss of rain forests, endangered species, acid rain, the ozone layer, the municipal waste crisis can feel out of our control. At the very least, these problems require group and corporate action or government intervention. However, there are some things the individual can control. Our waste reduction and recycling activities can make a difference. That's why so many communities began voluntary recycling programs. There are some household items that are dangerous if they are just thrown away with the regular garbage these items can damage the environment and injure plant and animal life some of these may include moth balls, spot removers, aerosol cans, fluorescent light tubes and shoe polish. Your local waste management agency has information on how to properly dispose of these items. A compost bin may be set up in your yard. Compost bins return plant and some food materials to the soil through decomposition so it can be used as a natural soil additive, called compost. Compost improves soil texture, increases the ability of soil to absorb oxygen and water. Compost also suppresses weed growth and reduces the need to add chemicals and pesticides to plants, which may be harmful to the environment. Keeping recycle bens in the kitchen may help to stop people from......

“How Would I Be Able to Help Preserve the Environment”

...BSIE -4B “How would I be able to help preserve the Environment” I definitely think it’s WAY more important to preserve natural habitats and wetlands. There was once a time before we had all these places to shop, and conduct businesses; when humans lived in sync with animals and nature and they were successful and happy. Here’s how I see it, the natural habitats and wetlands were here first, so we didn’t really have a right to just start cutting down trees, draining wetlands, building where forests once stood, etc. Then people want to start panicking when animals start going extinct, and global warming threatens our existence. No one wants to put themselves in the place of the animals’ whose homes we’re bulldozing over, you wouldn’t like it if someone just came in and tore down your home, to build the latest strip mall. Unbelievably, humans are doing that such thing to other humans, such as farmers, taking their land where the food that said destroyers NEED and WANT are growing. There are only so many resources, then watch how the same people who were destroying or using up those resources are drove insane when they’re all gone. And that’s what they get, too bad we’re all going to have to suffer. "Save the Planet," "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," "Go Green."   Quotes like these have become a commonality in today's age.   We all are familiar with the large efforts to help preserve the environment.   In "Ideals of Human Excellence and Preserving Natural Environments," Thomas E.......

How Data Mining Can Help a Business

...How Data Mining can help a business Data mining can help business strike gold when preparing products for a consumer. However, what is data mining? The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) defines data mining as “the process of finding correlations or patterns among dozens of fields in large relational databases” (N.D.). Oracle helps refine this definition, as this method “provides a way to get at the information buried in the data” (Oracle, N.D.). Oracle goes on to state how data mining helps find “patterns that sometimes elude traditional statistical approaches to analysis because of the large number of attributes, the complexity of patterns, or the difficulty in performing the analysis” (N.D.). There is petabytes of data for many companies and agencies to sort though. Many turn to cloud systems, or run programs that extract the data for them from their sources. UCLA goes on to define data as including operational data, nonoperational data, and Meta data. They use this information to help find associations, relationships, and/or patterns with in the data. They use this to develop knowledge about historical data. Companies like Volvo started to leverage cloud computing. They felt that each car could provide information that improved each car as it was built and driven. They also felt that the information provided by each car could improve the consumer experience while driving one of their cars. To support this, Volvo developed a sensor suite that......

These Friends Can Help You Get to the Next Episode

...Dear Shirley, I just want to express my sympathy to you about Tara and let you know that I am thinking about you and your family. Although she and I haven’t talked much over the years, I thought about her quite often and would sometimes check her social media pages to see how her life has been going. I think the last time we talked she was still in the army and she seemed to be doing well. And of course, since her birthday is just three days before mine I’d often think about her around that time. I thought it might be a nice idea for me to write down some of my memories of Tara for her children. Perhaps when they are a little older they can read them and enjoy them. She will always have a special place in my heart as being my first true best friend so I would love to share with them the little part of Tara that I knew. Jakob and Olivia, As a child, your mom was the most beautiful girl in our neighborhood; all the boys wanted to be her boyfriend, and all of the girls wanted to be her best friend. I was lucky enough that she chose me to be her best friend for a few short years. We didn’t live in the best neighborhood, but our families often relied on each other to get by. I remember on one occasion my mother taking Tara and I school shopping and buying us tons of new clothes. We even had a couple of matching outfits and would dress like twins! On another occasion, I remember your grandmother Shirley knocking on our door and handing my mother some money—money that I......

...socialization is the process in which a child learns how to behave in life and participate in a group in society. Socialization has four basic agents: family, school, peers and the mass media. Each one of these agents plays a role in our lives. However, in my opinion, the most important agent of socialization for the development of the child is the mass media. The Mass Media are the different processes that facilitate communication between the sender of a message and the receiver of that message. It plays an important role in the socialization of children. In fact, there are many types of media; these include newspapers, magazines, radio, films, CDs, Internet, and television. These kinds of media, especially television, affect children’s and adult’s behavior in different ways. According to the article, “Socialization: From Infancy to Old Age”, “The average family in the United States has at least one television turned on for at least seven hours a day.” Television is the biggest mass media in this country and has positive and negative aspects. There are some programs which are very helpful with lots of information for the children. For example; on channel thirty-three, there is a good program called“Dora the explorer”. When I decide to pursue my major-electrical engineering, I also aim at figuring out an efficient way to reduce the gas emission. I think about how to make use of the solar energy in the production of solar panel on rooftop, electricity-generating devices. Truthfully, the solar energy is very important to the world. The fossil fuels cannot remain sufficient; therefore, oil and gas supplies will go down and cannot bring enough for demand. The solar energy will be the best option for a long term. Solar panel on the rooftop will focus the sun’s rays to heat fluids that produce power so that it can help engines act. Solar energy makes the productivity higher. However, the use of solar energy in production is still low due to the manufacturing high cost. In the future, if all people tend to use more solar energy, the manufacturing cost will decrease so that it can fit to the majority. Furthermore, the storing of solar energy is also considered deeply. If people constantly use an energy source without storing for later use, that source will become disappear. Those are the things I am going to do in the future to make people have a better life....

Home Depot- They Can Build It, and You Can Help

...They Can Do It! You Can Help! Since Home Depot opened their doors in 1979, they set out to lead the market in excellent customer service. Their motto of “ whatever it takes” shows their commitment to differentiate themselves in that field (website, 2011). And it certainly seems to have helped them lead the market and continue to grow their business beyond U.S. borders and be competitive on a global scale. It is a part of what founders Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank deem the “Three Legged Stool” of their overall business strategy (Darrow, 1994, para. 8). The first leg is to provide the best selection and quantity of home building supplies to satisfy as many do-it-yourself customers as possible. The second leg of the stool is to offer their products at the most competitive price compared to the rest of the market so there is no reason to shop anywhere but Home Depot. These first two legs are substantial components of their competitive strategy and have helped them edge out most of the competition. From the start, however, the organization’s founders knew that that having quality, knowledgeable employees interfacing with their customers was one of the most crucial investments in which they should invest. The third leg, therefore, is to provide the best service in the industry (Darrow, 1994, para. 12). All of the legs of Home Depot’s strategic make-up are important and provide stability to their competitive advantage over the rest of......

Global Warming and What You Can Do to Help

...We hear the term “greenhouse gas” a lot—but what is it? Humans add various gases to the earth’s atmosphere every day; these gases (known as “greenhouse gases”) consist primarily of carbon dioxide, ozone, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and methane, and tend to warm the earth. Trees help counter greenhouse gas production during photosynthesis, by taking in carbon dioxide as waste material and producing oxygen, which of course we all need to survive. Scientists predict that the daily addition of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, combined with daily removal of large portions of the world’s forests, will raise the earth’s average temperature by several degrees in the next century. This in turn will raise the level of the sea and potentially create significant changes in weather patterns on a global scale. As we move into the future, many climatologists expect that most of the United States will warm. What we do not know yet is how to scientifically predict which parts of the nation will become wetter or drier. We do know there is likely to be an overall trend toward increased precipitation and evaporation, and more intense weather systems, in the form of violent rainstorms, blizzards and sun-baked, drier soils. The Facts—What Do We Already Know About Changing Global Conditions (Global Warming)? Global temperatures are rising. Observations collected over the last century suggest that the average land surface temperature has risen 0.45-0.6°C (0.8-1.0°F) in the last...

I should pay more attention at what's in front of me. Like the whole slew of cars during this bitch of a rainstorm. Nearly four years it was since I last saw him. Four years since I had last saw his boney frame and unchanged, soiled clothing. Four years since I thought this world was just compiled of shit and dirt. And four years since I couldn't wait for him to be taken away, to see what life is like without him. Maybe he had changed or maybe he was still drinking away the tiniest bit of man he had left. Hoping he would remain the drunk he always was, I pulled up to the house he supposedly was squatting in. Remembering the address I read on the restraining order documents, I couldn't stop repeating the numbers to myself. Stomach twisted, I walked up to the house. How Can Tax Cuts Help Revive the Economy

...How can tax cuts help revive the economy? Based on the theory of the Business cycle we know that, the economy can raise or fall, over time. In the United States of America as everywhere else in the world when the economy rises it is an economic boom just what it sounds like when business is booming. When it falls the sound is bad, fear, just like a bomb with the decline of the GDP, high unemployment rate, increased business failure( prices fall, people purchase fewer products, and business fail ), and overall drop in living standards. This situation causes all kinds of disruptions to the businesses and the households, and the government always look for the solution to bring the economy back to the phase of recovery which may eventually lead to an economic boom again then the business cycle continue. Here are some of the solutions used by US government to keep the economy away from slowing too much such as the tax cut, decrease of unemployment rate, and government spending. In this paper we are going to focus our development on the tax cuts and the unemployment rates to answer and give our point of view on the topic in question here. First, theoretically, low tax rates would tend to give the economy a boost because they draw money away from the government and put it into the private sector. Households have money to spend which is favorable for the economy and small-business ownership also increases profit which also helps the economy. However the......
