3) Gør rede for filmens form.

Back to School

...Barack Obama is a master of speeches. In his speech “Back to school” Obama encourages students to study hard and urges them to make their education a priority, because they are the only people who are responsible for their own future. The speech takes place at Wakefield High School in Virginia, and goes out to every student in America. Obama starts out by politely greeting everyone watching from the school, TV, and thanking everyone who has been helpful. He modifies his language to children and young people so he is easily understandable. He doesn’t talk down to the audience, he shows them understanding. He is also using humor to put himself on the same level as the audience, making them feel comfortable; “… some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning” (p. 1- L. 8-9) This way he doesn’t come off as this strict man from the White House, who is just trying to lecture the students about homework and school. He is not the president of the United States; he is just a man trying to reach these students, trying to tell them the importance of education. When Obama speaks in public, he uses a lot of different techniques to create a more emotional connection, and therefore he creates an impact on his audience. By using himself as an example he tries to encourage the students to take responsibility for their education, the future of their country, and their lives. “I know that feeling. When I was young...

...Essay about President Barack Obama’s speech “Back to school” Education is enormously important. The wish of having a good education system and people who freely use it is not something that only a few countries want or wish, but almost the whole world takes aim at this. The focus on education has particularly in the United States big mentions and support. The current Government, which are sitting on the power right now, has this area high on their list of upcoming plans for the future of the US. President Barack Obama has therefore also this topic involved in most of his performances and in most of the speeches he makes. Therefor, it’s definitely an option for the President to talk about the education topic in his speeches, which we also see in one of his speeches from 2009. This speech was held in Arlington, Virginia on September the 8. Obama visited Wakefield High School and presented his speech in front of a lot of older students, but also upcoming students, who was just about to start in a new step in the school system. As mentioned earlier, a clear point in President Barack Obama’s speech is how important the role of education has. This may also be the most important point he tells his audience about. He explains how, in this century one only can count on being considered for a job if one has an education. One can’t just expect that a job will appear and choose one, if the person has no proper education. Therefore will many good properties and abilities of the......

Back to School

...Back to school Obama starts by establishing a contact between him and the audience. He does this by telling the children of the schools that he knows it might be preferable for them to stay home under the bed sheets instead of getting up early for school. He also expresses his understanding for anyone nervous about going to a new school or a new part of school. Then he tells a short anecdote about his mother getting him up at 4:30 in the morning to be home schooled in Indonesia. Obama tells the children that he did not like getting up early either. He does this to make them understand that even the president himself did not love getting up early for school in his youth. The little story also works as an icebreaker with the punch line of the joke coming in the end, when Obama says he had to get up at 4:30. Having established a contact and gained some trust through his intro, Obama goes to a more serious tone in his speech. This is obvious when he says: “But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.” He starts out by assuring the students that he does everything in his power as the president to give them the best conditions in their schools. This brings him to the core of his speech; the responsibility of the students. Responsibility is a word he brings up several times throughout the speech from that point. Obama brings up the...

...that everyone takes responsibility for their education and make sure to do what the country needs. This is some of these values Barack Obama focus on in his speech “Back to school”. He appeals first of all to all the young students, who have a lot of problems and therefore a hard time, when trying to educate. These recipients all have to try, and if they quit, they will let down their country. So there are a lot of expectations to these students, which Obama clearly repeats. Obama’s most important argument in this speech, are all the American values, which he remind the students of. If the country must be able to retain its glory, the students have to preserve the American values, such as the education, and the inclination for learning, so they can educate and make their parents and their country proud. This nationalism is a very important value is; to do what’s best for their country. “You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers” (page 2, line 47). He points out the importance of a good education, if they are going to ensure that their country maintains its glory, and gets a lot of success. Back to School Event

...”Back to school event” In Barack Obama’s speech “Back to school event” his main topic is how important it is to focus on your studies. He is not only encouraging the students that are present in the room, but also every person in America that are currently in school to keep strong, even though the odds are against you, so you can finish your education. To get out the importance of the speech, Barack Obama is taking a heavy use in the rhetoric forms. For an instance, one of the rhetoric methods Obama is using is ethos. It is important that you trust, believe and feel with the person who is trying to get his words through to the listener. Here Obama is being highly successful with his connection to the people in the room, due to the fact that he is using himself as an example in his speech, which makes it more trustworthy. He makes an example of himself as an example as to why it may seem hard to study at the moment, but how it will be worth it in the end. He uses himself to get the message out that if you are heading towards a bad road, focusing on completing your studies will take you back to a more even and safe path. He is refers to education as your safety net, your only safety net. He simply let down all other options to succeed in life. Education led him to where he is today, so he wants to encourage the young society to continue pursuing their studies. Another rhetoric method Obama takes into use is pathos. Obamas Speech

...President Obamas Back To School Speech “When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school.” This is an example of exemplum. This enhances the speech because it illustrates a story of President Obama’s childhood. He didn’t have much growing up and relates to the audience as being an ordinary person just like us. “This is no picnic for me either, buster.” Obama uses an oxymoron when he refers to this. It enhances his speech because it emphasizes an example of when he was a kid. The word buster helps him connect to little kids and be at their level. Obama is trying to connect to all different ages to help us take his advice. President Obama uses an allusion to Michael Jordan when he quoted him, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And this is why I succeed.” This line enhances his speech because his personal experiences helped him display the obstacles that he overcame in his childhood. We all have obstacles so it helps us feel that everyone goes through a hard time and we will get over it with perseverance. Obama helps enhance his speech by using the rhetorical device apostrophe. He used it when he stated, “asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength.” He uses emotion to connect with the audience because we sometimes struggle and are afraid to ask for help. For some people this is emotional because they are afraid to talk to......

Obama Speech

...that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference. It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America. It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America. Barack Obama: 'A new dawn of American leadership' Link to this audio I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices...

I must start in the paper earlier than a day before, this would also make me remember those things above. Back to school Every time we all hear about how important it is to finish an education. People without an education do not have the same possibilities, as the people who worked hard to finish it. Making it through the whole education system and getting started with working and developing the place around you, is important for everyone, no matter if they believe in it or not. Barack Obama wants to make this clear for the students at their first day at school at Wakefield High School in Arlington. The speech has a typical composition for a speech of this kind. Obama Speech - Analysis

...Prepared Remarks of President Barack Obama: Back to School Event President Barack Obama held a speech for school students at Wakefield high school in Arlington, Virginia back in 2009. Obama's focus in the entire speech was about the importance of education and the young peoples enthusiasm for education. The speech was for students in all ages since the main message in the speech ”you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country”. Obamas main intention with his speech was to get the students to think the entire future of the country was depending on them, so the importance the students will get of the speech is hopefully a good motivation, so they will work harder for a brighter tomorrow and a promising future. But a good education does not come by itself it requires hard work and willpower. Barack Obama. The President. A president who has a lot of electors because he knows how he can get them. He starts his speech asking, “Hello everyone – How’s everybody doing today?.” Already there he has their attention. He can be a very formal guy, but in this occasion, is he very informal. He tries to sound more personal than professional in his speech the huge different in age from kindergarten to high school makes it hard for Obama to reach the whole audience. He involves the receivers and talks on a level where pupils from kindergarten can understand without he makes the speech boring for seniors in high schools. The president does not sound like a higher......

Barrack Obama Addresses the Schools

...Prepared remarks of Barack Obama: Back to School Event Prepared remarks of Barack Obama: Back to School Event The text ‘Prepared remarks of Barack Obama: Back to School Event, are the words spoken by the United States’ President Barack Obama. The Speech was given in 2009 at Wakefield High School in Virginia. It works as a motivational speech for every single American who will be starting his school after that years''s school holiday. As President Barack Obama is speaking for the schools all over America, he’s using very direct speech, with a lack of metaphors, as it would probably do more harm than good. “So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back to school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you.”(P. 7, l. 17) It’s important to keep in mind, that Obama is speaking to pupils from smaller grades. Actually pupils who just started school or kindergarten. Therefore it needs to be simple, so it’s possible for everybody to understand. When a president suddenly shows his face on the TV screen of every school in the country, that president has to do an effort to be taken seriously. And to show the viewers that he can be trusted. He does that in various ways: “Hello everyone - how’s everybody doing today?” (p. 7, l. 1), in this example he’s speaking as if he was talking directly to the listener. This creates Ethos, as he’s appealing to the moral. “I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. … it’s......

He also emphasizes who his audience is; “the American people”. Furthermore, the quotation is an example of his use of the appeal form pathos.
