Where is the center of the 3 dimensions of actions (ethical, legal, prudential)?
In reality, human mankind always comes across situation, occasions, or even dilemma, consisting of the ethical, legal and prudential elements. According to the 3 dimensions of actions, we should try to select within these frameworks, while the best solution always lies among the center of these 3 dimensions.
From “Ethics for the Real World” by Ronald A. Howard and Clinton D. Korver, I understand there are a lot of conflicting situations, whereby we are facing dilemmas or complicated decision-making process. For example, Ethical vs. Prudential: you are in hurry to your job interview meanwhile an elder woman being robbed is asking for help; Prudential vs. Legal: you are given an A-grade in a course, but the paper does not belong to you; Legal vs. Ethical: the books quoted Sir Hartley Shawcross’ rejection that obedience to unjust laws and orders absolved man of responsibility for crimes, i.e. there is no excuse for a thief to claim he is being told to steal.
The author also commented that we only faced ethical issues if we are tempted to commit something wrong or illegal. Most cases are simply temptations. This comes to a short conclusion, where a man always has a choice to proceed. Whenever we conclude as so-called dilemmas, we are actually unburdening our consciences.
Recently, I watched a movie called “Mr. Nobody”. It mentioned about the butterfly effect and the consequences of choices. Within the movie, the character pointed out that each choice bear the same value of consequences or future; time is dimensional and unidirectional, i.e. no turning back; and there is none regret in life.
Applying to the 3 dimensions of actions, each choice based on either dimension bear the same value of consequences or meanings. Therefore based on assumption of no regret, humankind ought to make the best choice within the time-flow, thus hereby meaning the center of 3 dimensions of actions.
Throughout MGMT2120 lectures, I learnt that there would not be a perfect solution, since solutions are subject to individuals’ utilities and choices, yet we should strive our best such no regret is made in our lives, since there is no turning back once made. It does not mean we should strive our best for something wrong for no regret; instead, fulfilling all three dimensions, we promote the self-interest and social interest together.…...

Nelson describes four dimensions which are not only components of love but necessary dimensions in order to satisfy sexually and amorously. These four dimensions are Epithymia, Eros, Philia, and Agape. Epithymia is the first of the four dimensions. This is the dimension of love that involves the sexual desire and fulfillment. This dimension involves all the physical aspects and expressions of love. This is a crucial element as all humans have strong desire to satisfy their bodily desires. Eros, the second dimensions of love, could be argued that it is the most natural and deep dimension of all. Eros is the yearning to be united with another. Nelson states it this way “Eros is aspiration and desire for the beloved” (Nelson, pg. 110). This is one of the most basic human instincts. I believe that Nelson would argue this point, by describing how Eve was created for Adam as he craved for the compassion of another. This predates the desire for physical fulfillment and as such can be considered more natural or innate. Philia is the third dimension of love and is a very interesting aspect of it.
