How Do You Think the U.S. Schools Can Be Improved?

...How do you think the U.S. schools can be improved? Schools should focus on the bottom of the hierarchy of the student needs, such as food and shelter. Schools should provide reduced cost or free breakfast and lunch to all students. We cannot change their home lives, but we know that learning on a satisfied belly takes better than learning over the growls of an aching tummy. School should eliminate social promotion. This would help for two reasons. First, we live in a capitalist society where work is only engaged in when there is a clear end reward such as a paycheck. Even at a young age, kids can understand that to. To get what they want they need to do the work that the parent gives them to do. Second, social promotion is the reason kids come unprepared into subsequent classrooms. This is obvious. We can blame ineffective teaching, or a numerous of other issues, but if they did not get the skills or content they needed, they ought to be given the opportunity to try again. School should reduce the teacher workloads at all levels. In elementary this would mean smaller class sizes and more collaboration time where kids are with PE, music, and art specialists. Many schools are cutting out most of the academic time for the children, which make teaching less interesting to most children. We need our schools to find what is exceptional in each child, teaching each that these strengths can be used to create meaningful lives for themselves. We need to improve education with a......

What Vpn Can Do for You. ( Written for Composition Class About I.T.)

...What VPN can do for you A discussion of how it works, and how your business can be more efficient by using it. Richard Biondo (12825561) In a vastly growing world, we are discovering new and improved… innovated technology everyday; technology that helps people live a better life, and technology that makes businesses more productive. People now have smaller desktop computers that are faster, have better storage and process memory, and are more efficient than even five years ago; and lighter laptop computers with longer battery life that are capable of networking wirelessly. These days most homes are networked wirelessly with several laptops, making it more convenient for dad to work a few extra hours at home in the privacy of his home office while his son is on Facebook in his room with his buddies. We can also subnet other hosts as well like our smart phones, Playstations, Xbox gaming consoles etc, making it possible to use the wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) saving our phone data plan usage and be able to play a video game with someone far away. It’s safe to say that we’ve come a very long way in the advancement of computer solutions and networking capabilities, enjoying its convenience for any reason, personal use or for business. Today a network far extends beyond a single home, office, store or campus; today we have several networking options to suit our needs as we have: local area networks (LAN- covering a single floor or building), campus area networks (CAN-......

6. Do You Think Companies Can Really Do Without Detailed Job Descriptions? Why or Why Not?

...6. Do you think companies can really do without detailed job descriptions? Why or why not? In one firm – British petroleum’s exploration division- the need for more efficient, flexible, flatter organizations and empowered employees prompted management to replace job descriptions with matrices listing skills and skill levels. Senior managers wanted to shift employees attention from a job description “that’s not my job” mentality to one that would motivate them to obtain the new skills and competencies they needed to accomplish their broader responsibilities. They created skills matrix which listed basic skills needed for that job, minimum level of each skill required for that job or job family. Emphasis is no longer on specific job duties, but on specifying and developing new skills and gave employees constant reminder of what skills they must improve. 1. What is the difference between reliability and validity? In what respects are they similar? Reliability describes the consistency of scores obtained by the same person when retested with the identical or alternate forms of the same test. If a person scores 90 on an intelligence test when retested the result should be the same. Validity indicates whether a test is measuring what it is supposed to be measuring. With employee selection tests, validity often refers to evidence that the test is job related. Reliability and validity are used in statistics and research design. At best, we have a measure that has......

Do You Think That Efficiency Can Conflict with Effectiveness?

...Do you think that efficiency can conflict with effectiveness? Explain and provide many real live examples as you can. Basically Efficiency and Effectiveness are two sides of a coin. Efficiency is competency in performance or ability to accomplish a job with a minimum expenditure of time and effort while effectiveness to achieve the intended or expected result. Ex. 1 In an advertising campaign. A company could spend millions of dollars on commercials and billboards to get a product out there. That example would be effective, but not efficient. That same company could make a silly viral video and "leak" it for free on the internet. That would be efficient. But the best way would be to balance between both approaches. That would be both efficient and effective. Ex. 2 Suppose that two guys, X and Y, are trying to change a flat tire on their cars (each one has his own car). X starts by taking out the jack and placing it under the car. He quite doesn’t know where to position it, so he goes by trial and error and wastes a lot of time doing it. After 30 minutes he finally manages to fix it, so he proceeds to lift the car and change the tire. As you can see X was doing the right thing, but he was doing it poorly. We can say that he was being effective, but not efficient. Y, on the other hand, starts by grabbing a towel and cleaning the tire. He wants to make the thing shiny before he changes it. And mind you he is very good and fast at cleaning every little......

Global Warming and What You Can Do to Help

...several degrees in the next century. This in turn will raise the level of the sea and potentially create significant changes in weather patterns on a global scale. As we move into the future, many climatologists expect that most of the United States will warm. What we do not know yet is how to scientifically predict which parts of the nation will become wetter or drier. We do know there is likely to be an overall trend toward increased precipitation and evaporation, and more intense weather systems, in the form of violent rainstorms, blizzards and sun-baked, drier soils. The Facts—What Do We Already Know About Changing Global Conditions (Global Warming)? Global temperatures are rising. Observations collected over the last century suggest that the average land surface temperature has risen 0.45-0.6°C (0.8-1.0°F) in the last century. Precipitation has increased by about 1 percent over the world's continents in the last century, with more rain in high latitudes and less rain in many tropical areas. Sea levels have risen approximately 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) worldwide in the last century, due to melting mountain glaciers and ocean expansion from warmer ocean temperatures. The Future—What Predictions Can We Make About Climate Change and Global Warming? Rising global temperatures are expected to further raise sea level, and change precipitation and other local climate conditions. Changing regional climate could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. In the......

What Makes Your Tired and What You Can Do About It

...ESSAY: What Makes You Tired-and What You Can Do About It Here is an astounding and significant fact: Mental work alone can't make you tired. Sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labour without reaching "a diminished capacity for work", the scientific definition of fatigue. To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If you took blood from the veins of a day labourer while he was working, you would find it full of "fatigue toxins" and fatigue products. But if you took a drop of blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins whatever at the end of the day. So far as the brain is concerned, it can work "as well and as swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning". The brain is utterly tireless. ... So what makes you tired? Psychiatrists declare that most of our fatigue derives from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England's most distinguished psychiatrists, J.A. Hadfield, says in his book The Psychology of Power: "the greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin; in fact exhaustion of purely physical origin is rare." One of America's most distinguished psychiatrists, Dr. A.A. Brill, goes even further. He declares: "One hundred per cent of the fatigue of the sedentary worker in good health is due to psychological factors...

If You Can Dream It, You Do It

...IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN DO IT...!! In childhood, we all have had many crazy dreams. But how many of us would really go behind those dreams and pursue them?? Time changes everything. And very few follow their dreams. It’s not that they forget their dreams, but the fear in them, pulls them back from pursuing their dreams. The courage they had in their childhood to do anything and everything is lost, the innocence is lost forever. They forget to think how much happiness it would bring into their life rather they are more concerned with what others would think if they follow their dreams. Even I have a dream, dream to be different. To stand out from the crowd, and to do things which no one ever had thought about. I always wanted to try those things which no one ever dared to do, because that helps me to know more and better of myself. I never followed anyone, because I never wanted to do the exact things what others did in their life. I wanted to be different, different from what others do and think. For me doing things differently, always means discovering myself, knowing more about myself, because what I always believe is, “if we want to do something different, we have to do that one thing which we feel we can’t do. Sometimes we may fail, but then we can proudly say, I’M DIFFERENT.” And for me the most daring thing is to be myself and to do exactly what I want to do at that point in time and not to be worried with what other people think or are doing. Yes I know......
