This document provides key screenshots, instructions and feature of the CourseSmart Reader.

Key highlights include * Bookmarking for fast navigation to specific pages within course materials. * Highlighting and copy of content within eTextbooks to capture key information for review. * Notes management options allowing users to view notes alongside page content or in a summary view. * Search and navigation within a book and view results in line with page content. * Multiple viewing options enabling content displays providing flexible reading and navigation of course content as well as multi-level zoom of images and text without losing page clarity.

Before Launching the Reader 1. “CourseSmart’s Reader provides an efficient and interactive user experience through flexible content management tools and viewing options to offer the best path to consuming digital course materials”. 2. Access your eTextbook through The ITT Technical Institute Learning Management System – or – sign directly in to http://CourseSmart.com using your student login credentials and select a book from your bookshelf.

If accessing your eTextbook through The ITT Technical Institute Learning Management System sign into the LMS using your student login credentials.

3. Click the course you are enrolled in and you will be taken to the CourseSmart eText link.

4. Click the CourseSmart eText link.

Note – in this walkthrough we will use “Advanced First Aid, CPR, and AED”

5. If accessed via http://CourseSmart.com or a mobile app, use your login credentials (they should be the same as your ITT login credentials) and select a book from your bookshelf. Go to your CourseSmart bookshelf. 6. On the users bookshelf you will notice that there is a lot of good information available before getting into an eTextbook. For students who have an eTextbook on a subscription basis, there is an indicator (1) stating how long the rental is and how much time remains in the period. There is also the option to read course material offline (3) that requires the book be ‘checked out’ and saved on the users computer.” See Offline Reader section for offline reader content.

7. Users are also able to view the notes they have taken in a given eTextbook from their bookshelf (2). They are also able to print these notes for exam preparation, open book tests or simple review, for example.

Showing the Offline reader 8. CourseSmart offers users the ability to view their course material offline in case they know they’ll be without an Internet connection at some point. This capability ensures they will have any time anywhere access to their eTextbooks without having to rely on connectivity. Users simply select the parts of their eTextbook they want to check out offline.

9. Once selected, click to Checkout Selections

10. Users selected content will then be saved to their bookshelf for offline viewing.

11. Once completed they can then view their offline bookshelf.

12. Then the user can read offline at their leisure.

13. From the bookshelf launch the online reader.

14. CourseSmart’s Reader offers many features and capabilities that are meant to ensure the user is comfortable with course content offering an experience that both mimics the experience of a physical book as well as offering valuable features that only an eTextbook can provide.

15. Note the Exit button

Users can leave the Reader at any time with the simple click of the Exit Reader button and go back to their bookshelf.

16. Click the Print button.

Printing of the digital course content is available for users to print ‘hard copies’ of the pages in their eTextbooks. This capability is available with limits in place that allow no more than 10 pages to be printed at once and 150% of book pages in total. This is in compliance with digital rights management requirements.

17. Click Cancel.

18. Click the button that displays the table of contents in the side bar.

The navigation experience through digital course materials can be much like that of a physical book where a table of contents can be used in line with the course material to get to sections of an eTextbook much like you would any book.

Search capabilities

19. CourseSmart’s Reader provides users with the ability to search for content inside of their eTextbook in a variety of ways.

20. Click the Search button in the navigation bar to initiate the search option.

21. Type a search term, in this example “poison”.

In context search is available to the user within a book and view results of a search are displayed alongside page content. Users enjoy quick and easy navigation between search results and book contents whether they want to see results within a specific chapter, anywhere within a book or on the page the user is reading. The term is automatically highlighted in the page in the Reader view”.

Navigation through eTextbooks

22. Navigation to specific pages within eTextbooks is available in a variety of ways that both mimics physical books as well as in more efficient ways that digital course materials offer.

23. Stay within the page of the eTextbook.

Paging through content in the eTextbook is done easily by ‘flipping’ each page, going either forward or backward, by using the clearly marked arrows.

24. Go to the right hand side of the tool bar to the Page Jump navigation.

Navigating by page number can be done if users simply specify a page number and hit ‘enter’ or click the right arrow and they are taken directly to the page. This is helpful when users need to quickly get to a specific page”.

25. Click the Page View button.

26. Expand the View button.

Users in the Reader are also provided with multiple viewing options available to them when looking at and navigating through their eTextbooks. Users can view pages the way they want whether it be by single page, continuous where users can scroll through the book, side-by-side for a more natural physical book experience; and, thumbnails for fast navigation through the various pages of the book.

Notes, highlighting, bookmarking, sharing and content capture tools

27. The Reader provides users with a number of very valuable tools for managing the content of their eTextbooks including: taking notes, highlighting content, sharing, zooming into and out of; and, copying and pasting content.

28. Go to a page in the eTextbook and select a section of content.

29. When users need to clearly point out sections of content that they want to highlight or take notes on, they simply click on the beginning of the content and drag to the end of the content they’re interested in working with. They will be then be given options on what they would like to do with this content including: adding a note, highlight or copy.

30. Select to Add a Note.

By choosing to Add a Note, the user is presented with a window that let’s them give a title and context to both for notation and for organization purposes.

31. Save the Note. This will take you back to the content page where the noted content is automatically highlighted and the View Note link visible in the right hand margin.

The section of content that was noted is now automatically highlighted for the user and notes on the page are called out in the right margin. To view notes for a page, you can choose to View Notes and read your notes in context, greatly improving the efficiency of content comprehension.

32. Select a content area again and choose Highlight.

You can also simply highlight content within a page for marking up areas of the eTextbook that need to be reviewed, much like you would do with a physical textbook.

33. Select a new content area and select to Copy.

If you would like to copy content and paste inside another document you may have open for word processing or report writing, simply copy the content and paste into the new document like you normally would”.

34. Bookmark feature. To display the Bookmark feature and how it’s available regardless of viewing option, select to View in various selections. The following is done in side-by-side.

Bookmarking is available on each page and in any View of an eTextbook, much like you would do with a physical book. You simply click the Bookmark option in the margin of each page of the eTextbook.

35. Next cover the collaboration capabilities of the Reader. Click the Share button.

Users can share content between each other straight from the Reader. This allows for more collaborative content consumption, sharing and interactive use of eTextbooks. Users can simply email their peers by inputting the appropriate email address and a subject. Comments can be made to provide context and the email sent. This can also work for instructors who want to distribute important pages or information for students that may be on an exam or practical. If the user would like to just copy the link to a page or page content, the “Send Link” option allows that. Users can then place the link in other notes or documents. Note – recipients should have access to the same eTextbook in order for the links sent to resolve.

36. Click OK.
Zooming into and out of content

37. The CourseSmart Reader provides multi-level zoom options for images and text without losing page clarity. This is extremely useful when studying content that is accompanied by graphics, models, charts or images where details are important for understanding the topics of study.

38. Naviate to a page that offers a graphic and click the Zoom IN (+) button.

Users can easily zoom in and out of content they would like to view more closely such as graphics or images”.

39. Click the Pan button.

The Pan option gives users the ability to Pan the content if the content area has been zoomed to a larger size than the browser display area. The use case would be if a user wants to zoom in on a section of their eTextbook and move the page into view”.

40. Click the Zoom OUT button as much as you need to demonstrate the zoom out capability.

41. Users can also zoom out on a view to get a more comprehensive view of a page or page contents.

Content management tools

42. Within the Reader, there are tools that enable the management of user generated content. The management of this content within the Reader is a very valuable capability and offers a compelling departure from a the more traditional process of taking, keeping and managing notes and notations within a physical textbook.

43. Click the Outline button Note – the default view is the of the “Table of Contents” tab in this view

44. While in the Outline view, users are able to see the tabs for: Table of contents, Notes, Bookmarks; and, any associated eResources. Viewing and navigating throughout an eTextbook can be done within this view allowing users to see what topics are covered in the book as well as navigating to specific pages within the book through the links represented by each entry in the table of contents tab”

45. Click the “My Notes” tab in this view

46. In the My Notes tab is where users have the ability to see all of their notes content taken in their eTextbook within a consolidated and organized view. Notes are arranged in order of the chapters and sections of the eTextbook and can easily be navigated for reference information. There are date stamps for each note so that users can track their content created at different points in the class term as well as links to the content pages within the eTextbook where the notes were taken – for immediate context and efficient association of note and material. This information can be printed for use in studying or in the event of a review or test.”

47. The “Print” options available for displaying what aspects of the users notes can be printed in the checkboxes.

Users can print their notes including various aspects of their notes for review including elements such as title, date, text, etc.

48. Click the “Print Notes” link.

49. Cancel out of the print view to go back to the tabs view.

50. Click the Bookmarks tab.

Within the Bookmarks tab, users have the ability to view all of the bookmarks they have set within their eTextbook, click on each to navigate to the pages marked as well as manage their Bookmarks by deleting any that are no longer necessary.

51. Click the Resources tab.

52. If there are any associated resources available from the publisher, links to these additional resources will be visible in this tab.

53. Click the Back to eTextbook link in this view. Users can exit out of their content management view by simply clicking the Back to eTextbook link at any time.…...

You, Reader and Idle Time

...Collin’s poem, “You, Reader,” is a humor-filled narrative that catches the reader’s attention and illustrates how two strangers are interlaced with one another all while showing how idle time can be used productively. While reading the poem, it can also be noted that time and what you choose to do with it is a constant theme. The persona in this poem, who happens to be the speaker, expresses how he is linked to the reader. The main link between the reader and the author is the poem itself in its literal sense. Grabbing the Reader’s Attention The poem begins with an attention-grabbing dramatic monologue; “I wonder how you are going to feel when you find out that I wrote this instead if you” (as cited in Clugston, 2010, section 12.1). This very first line comes off as arrogant and cocky, in result creating dramatic tension between the speaker and the reader. The persona grabs the reader’s attention by using detailed imagery about the particular day that he sat down to write the poem. The narrator paints a picture by describing the environment that he was in while writing the poem. He remembers to, “mention with a pen the rain soaked windows, the ivy-wallpaper” (as cited in Clugston, 2010, section 12.1). The scenery in this line creates a miserable pathetic tone for the reader. ...Introduction to Literature (ADI1303A) Reader-response approach was the best way to look at The Story of an Hour. I connected on different levels with the story of a woman who fell out of love with her husband. The short story is written with two tones one of somber and one of joy. The writer goes between the two and shows how one event can span different emotions. The Story of an Hour is a wonderfully written short story that spoke to me. The two completely different tones of the piece drew me in. The story begins with a somber mood as the lady of the home is being told about the death of her husband. “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance.” The tone in this sentence can be seen as somber, but it my also have a happy undertone. The loss of your soul mate should be a sad event, but perhaps that may not always be the case. As the story goes on the tone changes to one of elation as Mrs. Mallard begins to realize she is free from her husband. She begins to imagine her life without the burden of pretending to be in love with him. She makes her way down the stairs only to find her husband waiting at the end. ...ompar Comparison between 'The reader' – Book/Movie Usually when it comes to books and movies books are a lot more detailed and descriptive towards characters and their feelings. Movies usually cut out important parts or aren't as deep as a book. In this case i felt that the movie was very much alike to the book and included all emotions and important scenes, what i really liked also was that the story line wasn't changed in the movie. They emphasized really well Hanna and Michaels relationship in a way i thought wouldn't be possible. They managed to portray their relationship exactly how it was explained in the book, every detail came across to the viewers and also made it a lot easier to understand the book itself in ways one couldn't before seeing the movie. I thought they wouldn't emphasize the fact that Hanna was illiterate but they really made that come across well therefore the whole movie had better understanding as did the book. I do feel that the book was much slower with the reading between Michael and Hanna but in a way that was well done because then the movie would have become too slow and gotten a bit boring. It's different in the book because you expect that slowness but it was good that in the film they put together most of that in a few minutes, still emphasizing it. McDonald Professor Williams ENC 1102 12 January 2011 Reader Response 1 The first time I read “The Cranes” by Peter Meinke, it appeared to be nothing more than a story about an elderly couple sitting in their car at the Gulf of Mexico reflecting on their lives together. However, the second time I read the short story, I began to pick up on the author’s symbolism. It wasn’t until I read the story for a third time that I realized the couple was committing suicide. I truly enjoyed this story. There is so much more to it than I originally thought. The initial shock of realizing that the husband and wife were taking their own lives was quite disturbing to me. In order to make and emphasize her point and affect the reader, Morrison laces her main character’s timeline with violence, vulgarity, and sadness. It’s probably one of the most affective instruments the author uses in my opinion. She manipulates the readers feelings and expectations by insinuating flashbacks within her story without warning, all the while providing the reader the necessary information on how her main character, Sethe, had gotten to where she is in present day. Violence plays a huge role in the storyline and the emotional aspect that’s portrayed to the reader. When the speaker describes the tree embedded into Sethe’s back, and how she got it, the description allows the reader to really understand how badly she and the others were treated and be made aware of the circumstances that she had to live in. As the author describes the gruesome injustice done to Sethe by the inhumane man that had brutally beaten her to the point of her back being torn, it makes the reader feel sorry for Sethe. The symbolism behind the tree truly is literary genius. The author was able to take a traumatic event, a horrific one at that, and manage to symbolize it as something as peaceful and simple as a tree. ...“An American Childhood” Reader’s Response Many details in Annie Dillard’s “An American Childhood” suggest that the author is retelling the events of an early childhood experience from the viewpoints of herself as an adult. Ms. Dillard’s essay uncovers the differences between how adults and children view the world and seek happiness. However, there are a couple points to this essay. It seems as though, one of the author’s main points was to convey the message that some of the simplest moments in her life were also the happiest and most memorable. For example, she says, “I got in trouble throwing snowballs, and have seldom been happier since”. Also, I noticed that the author seemed to be motivated to inspire readers to chase life’s experiences passionately until one is satisfied. In the essay the author uses two rhetorical modes: narration and description. Ms. Dillard uses narration to describe her perspective of what it was like to be a child in America.
