The leadership characteristics that helped Southwest Airlines move forward is the responsibility of the leader. Responsible leadership is defined as making business decisions that, upon the interests of the shareholders and also other stakeholders, for example employees, customers, suppliers, the context as well as the future generations (Definition of responsible leadership, n.d). From the text showed that the leader have the responsibility on his staff, he is caring his staff. The way to prove my point is three days after 9/11, James Parker announced that the company would be keeping all of its employees when the ramifications of the shutdown forced other airlines to cut staff. When he promised to keep all of its employees, the employees do not worry whether when their last day to work is, so the task which he delegated to employees can be doing well. And the employees created the loyalty to the company due to this action. Even when the company wanted to help reduce the company’s workforce and cuts cost, it also without laying off its employees but it was offering voluntary buyout packages to all employees who were willing to retire early.
Besides that, encouragement also is another leadership characteristic of the leader of Southwest Airline. The encouragement in leadership is defined as the action of motivating other people with the whole new courage, spirit, hope, support or confidence (Jeremiah, 2005). The power of encouragement in leadership is very unique and powerful. By implementing encouragement in leadership, an encouraged environment is created that will inspired the followers to do better. According to the case study, when other airlines are cutting staff after the terrorist attacks, Southwest Airlines is the only airlines that not only to promise to keep staff, as well as issuing a profit- sharing payment. Issuing a profit-sharing payment is for…...

...remain the same over time (Berger, 2008). There are stages in life that begins with birth and infancy then continues to early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, adulthood, late adulthood, and finally the end of one’s life (Berger, 2008). If an individual lives a full lifetime, the stages mark different developments including physical, emotional, and psychological. Currently, there are five characteristics of development. First, multidirectional is a characteristic suggesting change occurs in every direction (Berger, 2008). Another characteristic is multicontextual which suggests human lives are rooted in many contexts, such as historical and economic conditions, and family patterns (Berger, 2008). The third characteristic is multicultural which suggests many cultures are involved in how an individual develops (Berger, 2008). The fourth characteristic is multidisciplinary which illustrates multiple academic fields contributing his or her data and insights (Berger, 2008). However, no single stage controls all development because the fifth characteristic of development is plastic. The term “plastic” suggests development can go in many directions and can be influenced by events occurred in the past (Berger, 2008). The most important developmental study is science. Science depends on theories, data, analysis, critical thinking, and methodology making the study of human development multidisciplinary with the various medical and scientific fields. Also,......

Follower Characteristics

...The five characteristics/styles of a follower are described by Robert E. Kelley as an alienated follower, conformist, pragmatic survivor, passive follower, and effective follower. Each has different characteristics and can be the effect of different leadership styles perceived in the workplace. Alienated followers are usually very effective and independent followers, yet they do not have very good relationships with their superiors. They spend a lot of time complaining about their boss’s shortcomings instead of committing to work. While a critical thinker, they are usually capable of fulfilling tasks, but unwilling to do so. An alienated follower is typically the result a superior not keeping a promise, or when the employee runs into obstacles. An example of an alienated follower is an accountant who is given the option to relax in the break room and complain to fellow employees and their boss, versus putting in extra effort to help a client for their boss, they would stick to the break room. The second characteristic is a conformist. Unlike the alienated follower, a conformist is very involved in a healthy relationship with the boss. While not as much of a critical thinker, a conformist simply does what he or she is told. They are over dependent on their leaders and do not look at possible consequences that could result from their actions. No matter what task is being requested of them, they follow orders without question. This is usually the result of working with......

Leadership: Charismatic Individuals or Contingent Characteristics?

...Table of Contents 1. Introduction 2. What is leadership? 3. Who is a leader? 4. Key Theories of Leadership 5. The Charismatic Leaders and their leadership 6. Contingent Leaders, a model to follow? 7. Conclusion Introduction This report reviews and examines the theories behind leadership; identifying and analysing the concept of leadership and leaders from an analytical perspective. Some of the key points will focus on areas I have particular disputes with. Areas such as: • What is leadership? • Who is a leader? • Key Theories of Leadership • The Charismatic Leaders and their leadership • Contingent Leaders, a model to follow? These are the key points I will address in this report taking an analytical perspective into the idea of a leader being thought of as caring and developing followers. 2 WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? I believe the actual concept of leadership is intangible; this is due to the reliance on the members of the group the “Leader” has to try and influence to reach its target goal. Therefore Leadership is commonly defined as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts towards goal setting and goal achievement (Buchanan and Huczynski. 1985, 2010). Leadership appears to be a critical ingredient in effectiveness; a process of social persuasion in which one can enlist the aid and......

...If one examines predialectic appropriation, one is faced with a choice: either accept textual neocultural theory or conclude that the goal of the reader is deconstruction, given that neomodern cultural theory is valid. Lacan promotes the use of predialectic appropriation to challenge capitalism. In a sense, the premise of neomodern cultural theory states that class has significance. “Society is impossible,” says Derrida. The characteristic theme of Porter’s[1] essay on Debordist situation is the role of the observer as writer. However, if predialectic appropriation holds, the works of Burroughs are postmodern. The main theme of the works of Burroughs is the futility, and eventually the paradigm, of capitalist sexual identity. The subject is contextualised into a neomodern cultural theory that includes culture as a totality. Thus, Lacan uses the term ‘constructivism’ to denote the role of the observer as artist. The characteristic theme of Cameron’s[2] analysis of neomodern cultural theory is not, in fact, theory, but posttheory. It could be said that the opening/closing distinction depicted in Eco’s The Name of the Rose is also evident in The Limits of Interpretation (Advances in Semiotics). The subject is interpolated into a pretextual constructivist theory that includes consciousness as a reality. Thus, Sontag’s model of predialectic appropriation holds that the significance of the observer is social comment. Lacan uses the term ‘neomodern......

...“Arabs are an ethnic group and Muslims are a religious group.” Other differences’ between the two are that they hail from different geographical and ancestral backgrounds, and they arrived to the United States at different times.” One policy change that has occurred in the past few years (post 9/11) is that there is a close surveillance of Muslims charity organizations. Another change is that it has been a decrease in the number of visas being given to people coming from Muslims countries (Voices of America News.com, 2006). Orientalism is defining by our text as the simplistic view of the people and history of the Orient with no recognition of change over time or the diversity within its many cultures (Schaefer, 2006). A couple of characteristics of orientalism are that it is an outdated way of looking at Muslim and Arab people without taking into account changes over the years and how they live currently. Also it is a blanket concept that does not look at all of the different cultures within these groups (Schaefer, 2006, p. 286). Orientalism is an ignorant concept and ignorance often leads to meaningless violence hence this uneducated state of mind can directly relate to hate crimes. The best way to promote tolerance and reduce prejudice is by educating people to whom and what Arabs and Muslims really are. Usually, prejudice is caused by a fear of something. If that fear is taken away, by learning about Arabs and Muslims, then there will be no need for prejudice. Another......
