Caterpillar Inc. Overview

The Caterpillar Tractor Co. was formed in 1925 as a result of the merger of the C.L. Best Gas Tractor Company and the Holt Caterpillar Company. Restructure as Caterpillar Inc. in 1986, and it is currently one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. Caterpillar has over 3 million machines in usage and it runs in three primary lines of business such as Machinery, Engines, and Financial Products. .

Strategic Overview

In order to remain to excellently grow the business and success against the competition, Caterpillar has implemented Vision 2020, an enterprise strategy that emphases on the Company’s customers, employees, and stockholders. Vision 2020 is built on Caterpillar’s strategic goals, operating principals, and core values. The three primary strategic goals of Vision 2020 are to produce superior financial results, be a global industry leader and have the greatest team. Involved in Vision 2020 are Caterpillar’s “Big 8” requirements for 2011 through 2015 which is focus on how Caterpillar will success and preserve and improve its leadership position. Over Vision 2020, Caterpillar expects to win by delivering valued, quality products, services and solutions to customers that deliver the lowest total owning and operating lifecycle costs. This value plan, enabled by incomparable customer support, generates the largest global field population, highest customer loyalty and attractive profitability through the business cycle.

...Required Return for Equity Investors We used the CAPM equation to come up with Caterpillar’s cost of capital. Using weekly returns on one-year treasury bills, the S&P 500, and Caterpillar’s stock since the beginning of 2010, we used regression analysis to determine the beta of the company. The beta we calculated for Caterpillar is 1.56. Next, we estimated the risk free rate using knowledge of what we believe will happen in the near future. Currently, the yield on 10-year treasury bills is 1.98%. This is low because the country is recovering from the latest recession. We believe that because of the expected economic recovery, this will change in the next few years and that a more realistic risk free rate looking forward is 3%. Next, we determined an appropriate expected market return. ...Caterpillar Machinery Company Lockout Caterpillar, a construction heavy-machinery manufacturer in London, Ontario, has just recently locked out over 500 workers who were within the Canadian Auto Workers union. The recent lockout of these experienced industrial workers was because of Caterpillar’s idea to decrease wages from $35.00 to as low as $16.50 which is less than half. Caterpillar also decided to slash employee benefits by 55%. The Canadian Auto Workers union has demanded that this will not be accepted, but Caterpillar is basically leaving behind the veteran workers who were being paid $35.00 an hour and covering up for their absence with replacement workers who are happy to receive the $16.50 an hour. The sad part of the situation is that Caterpillar was not a company that was largely in debt or losing money, quite the opposite actually since Caterpillar was making fairly healthy profits before they slashed wages. Now they are currently enjoying their new all-time high profits and due to the over 50% cuts on employee wages and benefits. The company declared that the employees were on strike, and the workers union replied back by saying that no such strike was called and that the employees would be attending their regular shifts.
