Blink and You Miss It 1. Write a summary of “Blink and You Miss it” (150 words).
We follow the main character on a flashback to his young manhood. The flashback starts when he sees a boy named Sammy crossing the street. He describes how carefully he is looking for cars before he crosses the street. He also describes how Sammy’s common sense will desert him in eight or nine years. In the flashback the main character is on a beach sitting in a circle of people, in the centre of the circle is the beach guru. Due to a police raid, the main character has to help the beach guru purchase some drugs for the nights big beach party. The main character goes with the guru into town, where the guru has a contact with the police chief. They are going to meet the guru’s contact at the docks. The guru persuades the main character to go over to the contact and buy the drugs. But as he asks for the drugs he is arrested by the police and dragged away, meanwhile the guru hands the police chief a wad of banknotes. Here the flashback ends and we are back in the present. The main character describes how he has been watching the boy Sammy and how he has tried to get in touch with him by sending Christmas cards. The cards are however returned with a note from Sammy’s father that implores him to not write anymore.

2. Characterize the main character/the narrator (150 words).
The story’s head character is a drug addict. (Side 145, Pt. 19-21) it shows that he is living at an exotic place in the flashback and his is trying to get away from it all and instead living out a paradise dream. In the present he is thinking back on his young days. (Side 149, Pt. 1-5 and side 145, Pt. 30-31) Where he was a very naive person, who not really thought things throw before doing it. He noticed that there is something wrong with the assignment he gets and how the beach guru seems strange. In a way I…...

Blink Essay

...Cecilia Abate English 114 10/6/10 Blink: A Brush With Subconscious Cognitive Reflexes Truth is often a difficult thing to discern. There is a common assumption that moving too fast and not thinking decisions through will result in a product of weak clarity and perhaps also weak quality. As a society, we encourage our loved ones to think things through, reconsider, and “sleep on” information in order to weigh all the possibilities and come to the best possible conclusion. However, Gladwell, the author of Blink, suggests differently. In direct contrast to what most of us have been told, he pushes us towards quick thinking as a profitable and easy option – to pay attention to one's subconscious is to harness the power of thoughts you did not know you were having. If you pay attention to your “gut feeling”, your decisions will take less time and may be more accurate. This is exactly the idea of thin slicing, a concept that many of us utilize in our daily lives. I have had a handful of situations where I immediately noticed and decided upon something, then thought it through and came to a completely different answer with what I thought was logical and sensible reasoning. This is exactly what Gladwall is arguing against-- he says that we should lean towards trusting our snap judgements. Once in tune with this concept, I realized that I use this tool already-- with friends, judging couples, for instance, or comparing people I barely knew and making assumptions based off what......

Life Changes in a Blink of an Eye

...Life Changes in a Blink of an Eye Life is not what it seems; we don’t recognize ourselves as we’re all lost. I think; therefore, I doubt whether I am or not. One’s life is not what it seems, nor is what we were taught since childhood. The idea of living life is reduced to a life tacked by common sense. My own significant weight is what led me down the path of realization. My life had a slight change July 9, 2010, I was charged with two felonies. January 1, 2010 was when everything began. I started dating a young man that wasn’t right for me and I knew it, but I looked past it and gave him a chance. I was in deep LIKE. His lifestyle wasn’t the legal lifestyle and his friends wasn’t right either, but I looked pasted all the wrongs and continued on with my relationship. I would do anything for this guy, I only asked one thing from him and that was to not put me in any trouble and he agreed; but his friends had a different view on others life that wasn’t theirs. The summer of 2010 was when everything started to change. We decide to move in together and continue on with our relationship. Life and Love can be a tricky thing. Rather I knew right from wrong I believe he was right for me. Again, the friends were a issue and I knew it but I trusted him to have them in order and make sure or house was our home. Life is not what you dreamed it to be. July 9, 2010 my partners’ friend asked for a ride and when I dropped him off I notices he left a black book bag in my vehicle, I......

Attentional Blink

Blink - the Power of Thinking Without Thinking

...Getty’s conservation studio to see the statue as well. Hoving always makes a note of the first word that goes through his head when he sees something new, and he’ll never forget what that word was when he first saw the kouros. “It was ‘fresh’— ‘fresh,’” Hoving recalls. And “fresh” was not the right reaction to have to a two-thousand-year-old statue. Later, thinking back on that moment, Hoving realized why that thought had popped into his mind: “I had dug in Sicily, where we found bits and pieces of these things. They just don’t come out looking like that. The kouros looked like it had been dipped in the very best caffè latte from Starbucks.” Hoving turned to Houghton. “Have you paid for this?” Houghton, Hoving remembers, looked stunned. “If you have, try to get your money back,” Hoving said. “If you haven’t, don’t.” The Getty was getting worried, so they convened a special symposium on the kouros in Greece. They wrapped the statue up, shipped it to Athens, and invited the country’s most senior sculpture experts. This time the chorus of dismay was even louder. Harrison, at one point, was standing next to a man named George Despinis, the head of the Acropolis Museum in Athens. He took one look at the kouros and blanched. “Anyone who has ever seen a sculpture coming out of the ground,” he said to her, “could tell that that thing has never been in the ground.” Georgios Dontas, head of the Archeological Society in Athens, saw the statue and immediately felt cold. “When I saw......

Blink

..."In the first two seconds of looking –in a single glance – they were able to understand more about the essence of the statue than the team at the Getty was able to understand after fourteen months . . . Blink is a book about those first two seconds." Gladwell begins his introduction with the story of a kouros – an ancient Greek sculpture of a young naked male – that was acquired by the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1983. Kouroi are very rare. As a result this particular kouros was being sold for $10 million. Because of the hefty price tag, the Getty Museum was very careful when testing to see if the kouros was a forgery. However, after 14 months of analysis, the Getty determined that the kouros was in fact real, and bought the statue. Many scholars did not agree that the kouros was real. To them, something about the statue didn’t look right. When Thomas Hoving, the former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, looked at the statue the first word that came to his mind was “fresh”. When Angelos Delivorrias, director of the Benaki Museum in Athens, first laid eyes upon the statue he felt a wave of immediate disgust. For a long time the validity of the kouros was hotly debated. Finally, the Getty’s case began to fall apart. As it turned out, a lot of the documents used to prove the statue’s authenticity were forged. Also, as experts began to examine the statue in great detail, they came to the realization that it used a hodgepodge of styles from many different......

Blink-182 Essay

...red plane, a yellow pair of pants, and a green jacket. It was a CD. I couldn’t quite place where I had seen this from before; then a vague memory of seeing it being shoved into the car stereo trickled into the back of my mind. Eager to see what artist it was by, I ran down the stairs and slipped it into the computer. An artist name popped up: blink-182. I gasped. The name triggered musical memories… the CD was called “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket”. “Could it be?!” I shouted, accidentally aloud. I downloaded it to the computer then to my iPod. Scrambling for my headphones, I finally felt the rubbery cord and yanked it out. Plugging it into my iPod, I hit play. The music flowed through my ears to my brain, and I stopped breathing for 30 seconds. I flipped through the songs, and each of them triggered memories. I listened to the lyrics, and it felt as if my heart stopped beating. They were so realistic, so true, so relatable… but each song conveyed a message. Each song told me how to get over a break-up, or how not to let anyone affect my personality, and to just be myself. Not be afraid of who I was, and just be honest. Blink-182 changed my attitude, and they also helped me through friend dramas, which I cannot imagine would have been like without their music guiding me on. Honestly, they made me a better person. I didn’t have as much of a temper, and all in all, I was so much happier. Most people would say, “They’re just a band”, but no. They’re not. To hundreds of...
