Class and social mobility in Persuasion

Admiral Croft who was among the nouveau rich, had the financial means to rent

Kellnych From Sir Walter, one of the so-called landed gentry. How does Jane Austen's

treatment of class and social mobility reveal about these men and their women such as

Anne Elliot and Mrs. Smith? Which group fares better and why?

In Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, treatment of class is demonstrated focusing on the importance of social status as well as how social status can change significantly. In addition, Austen’s novel displays the variation of class differences as social mobility becomes further accepted after the war. The novel presents two different types of Englishman. One type describes the likes of Sir Walter, a traditional, titled, land-dwelling gentleman who splurges and enjoys the finest luxuries in life. The other type describes the likes of Admiral Croft, a naval officer who worked hard and made his own fortune. Admiral Croft was considered nouveau rich and didn’t have the same high social position as Sir Walter. Many of the naval officers had titles but did not have money because their property value was declining. (Austen).
During this era, the nouveau rich were perhaps better off financially but were not recognized socially by titled men such as Sir Walter. Sir Walter believed his wealth and his high social class would last forever. Unfortunately, when Sir Walter’s wife died he lost all logical reasoning regarding money. At this point, realism hit home and he was forced into forfeiting Kellnych to a naval officer and he moved to an apartment in Bath to lessen his money problems. Though Sir Walter dislikes that the Navy, as it brings "men of obscure birth into undue distinction," he is satisfied with Admiral and…...

Mr Robert Allison

...Robert Allison W12020458 Business with International Management Global Supply Chain Management MO255 Alireza Shokri Word Count: Task 1 – 834 Task 2 – 989 Task 3 – 828 Summary – 500 Overall – 3000 Task 1 In recent years the media has a lot to talk about with regards to the British supermarket industry. The main issue raised has been targeting the “horse meat scandal” which has been a major talking point amongst the British public since the media began making it such a relevant topic. This issue is mainly down to the supply chain link between the raw materials supplier and the retailer. An example of this is frozen foods company Findus having to recall a large amount of its lasagne meals due to their supplier Comigel raised concern that its products didn’t “conform to specification” (Bowling, 2013). Tests were performed on the products supplied by Comigel and out of the 18 products tested they found 11 to be containing between 60 and 100 percent horse meat traces (Bowling, 2013). Another good example of the horse meat scandal in the media is with Tesco supermarkets. Tesco’s everyday value frozen burgers which used meat supplied by Silvercrest Foods (Hegarty, 2013) were tested to analyze the percentage of meat in each burger. Out of the 27 beef burgers that were trialed 10 tested positive for horse DNA and 23 positive for pig DNA (Hegarty, 2013). The highest level of horse DNA found in any of Tesco’s value burgers was a massive 29.1% and since the......

Weir Allison

...A STUDY OF FULVIA by Allison Jean Weir A thesis submitted to the Department of Classics In conformity with the requirements for The degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada December 2007 copyright © Allison Jean Weir 2007 Abstract Who was Fulvia? Was she the politically aggressive and dominating wife of Mark Antony as Cicero and Plutarch describe her? Or was she a loyal mother and wife, as Asconius and Appian suggest? These contrasting accounts in the ancient sources warrant further investigation. This thesis seeks to explore the nature of Fulvia’s role in history to the extent that the evidence permits. Fulvia is most famous for her activities during Antony’s consulship (44 BC) and his brother Lucius Antonius’ struggle against C. Octavian in the Perusine War (41-40 BC). But there is a discrepancy among the authors as to what extent she was actually involved. Cicero, Octavian and Antony, who were all key players in events, provide their own particular versions of what occurred. Later authors, such as Appian and Dio, may have been influenced by these earlier, hostile accounts of Fulvia. This is the first study in English to make use of all the available evidence, both literary and material, pertaining to Fulvia. Modern scholarship has a tendency to concentrate almost exclusively on events towards the end of Fulvia’s life, in particular the Perusine War, about which the evidence is much more abundant in later sources such as Appian......
