Reflective Paper Math 157

...Reflective Paper Math/157 June-22-2014 Evan Schwartz Reflective Paper The course math for elementary teachers has taught me many concepts on how to work with students and to help them achieve success in the classroom. The objective of the course Math for Elementary teachers two is to assist the learner with understanding day to day applications of mathematics, and to give different ideas on how to differentiate learning. There were several ideas covered in this course but there are several of the major mathematical concepts that stand out to me. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics principals and standards was a very big help in guiding me to understand what was required to teach specific grades based on the common core. The major mathematical concepts that are in this course are, data analysis, probability, introduction to geometry, applications of geometry, application of measurement and mathematical connections. In data analysis we used appropriate statistical methods to analyze data such as detecting patterns, developing explanations and testing hypotheses. Teaching the children how to sort the data such as using tally marks for how many people like a certain object over something else. Bar graphs, pie graphs, line graphs and pictographs. Learning data is a very important concept that the students will need for the rest of the educational career. Probability which is the measure of how likely something is was also a concept that was covered in the...

...HIST 1301 11/25/2013 Title: Clark, Victor S. “The Influence of Manufactures Upon Political Sentiment in the United States From 1820 to 1860.” The American Historical Review, 22 (October 1916): 58-64. Purpose: Victor S. Clark outlines the economic influences of the expansion of manufactures upon the political sentiment in America before the Civil War. He discusses the role of political institutions in the shaping of our economic progress, with the intent to show that the rise in manufactures in the United States during this time brought a stronger form of centralized government that would favor an increase in public intervention of the ecomic activities of individuals. Ultimately he encourages us to believe this was one of the main causes for Civil War in the US during this time. Summary: In the few decades before the Civil War, many Americans relied primarily on the household goods they could produce or acquire locally. Without the need for regulation of these small items, sentiment in the United States leaned towards the idea that people could manage these tasks on their own. However, after the revolution these attitudes began to change with the rise in manufactures and the expansion towards the south. Crops such as tobacco, sugar, and cotton were just a few of the commodities that people in the US and overseas desired for. Inevitably, this caused people to rethink where power should lie to maintain the idea that equality existed among the entire population. From start...

Hist 330

...HIST 330 A Woman’s Place Anne Hutchinson lived during the colonial period of American history and during this period Puritan women lived under feme covert. Although women lived under feme covert, Puritans believed that there should be great love and respect in marriages with no domestic abuse. Ideal Puritan women were known as goodwives who were the backbone to their home and marriage, however Puritans did not convey equality among genders. According to historian Ellen Carol DuBois, “In the 1630s, leaders faced a major controversy regarding both religious orthodoxy and gender assumptions”(TWE, 73). This controversy left women like Anne Hutchinson in the middle of gender oppression and silenced opinions since women were not allowed to challenge male authority or offer their own biblical interpretations. Anne Hutchinson was a midwife and the daughter of a preacher, she was was described as “a woman of haughty and fierce carriage, of a nimble wit and active spirit, and a very voluble tongue, more bold than a man…”(Reader, 5). She was a woman who challenged the idea that women were not allowed to voice their opinions about religion. Allegations of heresy were conducted against her after she was convicted of holding formal religious meetings in her home that also contested the status of women. While on trial she asked the court if there was a rule against her teaching since before she arrived there were such meetings previously held. She also gave an example of scripture......

...Women’s Role in Vietnam War: An Annotated Bibliography Thesis: Women played a very significant role during the Vietnam War in the 1950’s and 60’s. Their active voluntary involvement which included mainly nursing was a big help for the United States soldiers as they aided South Vietnam during the war. Source 1: Elshtain, Bethke, Jean. Women and War. New York; Basic Books, Inc., Publishers. 1987. Women who were voluntary nurses during the Vietnam War cared for the soldiers physically but also mentally. Often some soldiers late at night would come to the nurses and talk to them about their families at home or their significant other. These talks would help get the soldiers mind off the war and help them relax as they were stressing over the battles in Vietnam. Sometimes soldiers would ask nurses to even marry them so that they could die as marry men. This relationship between nurses and the soldiers was not perceived well by other people at the time. Many nurses were called “sluts” because of their late night visits with the soldiers. After the war nurses were viewed negatively by the public. It wasn’t until years later where women where seen as heroes during the Vietnam War. In this source of information it tells you more about the personal relationships the nurses had with the soldiers and how they helped the men cope mentally. This is also a pretty reliable source because it states real life situations and relationships that actually happened during the Vietnam War.......

Final Examation Hist 157

...1. The Brown vs. Board of Education trial is one of the most important trials in the 1950s and even in America's history. It is a significant decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court which outlawed racial segregation of public education facilities (schools run by the government). In the 1950s it was common for segregation in public schools even though they were supposed to be equal. In one instance Linda Brown, a third-grader in Topeka, Kansas, had to travel a mile to get to her black elementary school, even though there was a white school only seven blocks away. Linda's father, Oliver, once tried to enlist Linda into the white school but the principal refused. Oliver then contacted William Everett Glenn, Sr., a Topeka attorney and Mckinley Burnett, the head of the Topeka NAACP branch, about his concerns regarding "separate but equal policies" of Topeka schools. The separate but equal doctrine came about in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson which stated that having blacks and whites in separate equal facilities did not violate the Equal Protection Clause. On May 17, 1954 the United States Supreme Court decided unanimously that The Board of Education acted unconstitutionally and that they violated the 14th Amendment by separated children if for no other reason than for their race. Webber, Andrew "Brown v. Board of Education about the case" [online] available http://brownvboard.org/summary/ The unanimous court decision announced by Chief Justice Earl Warren was the turning......
