Advertisements Gone Haywire Advertisements are a negative influence on today’s society in many ways. They entice buyers to purchase things they don’t need, by doing so many people go into debt and spend money they don’t have. Also advertisements do not only seem bad, but statistically their cons outweigh their pros. Advertisements might look fun, but in the end the consumer might be a victim of false advertisement. One last argument is that advertisements are a constant invasion in people’s lives with the message that they need all those different products to be complete, taking advantage of the consumer’s gullibility or fear. This is why advertisements are a negative influence and is something today’s world would be better without. An example of the negative impact of advertisements is the Roni Deutch advertisements for A Professional Tax Corporation. This was a service that was advertised, and many people trusted, even after extensive research of the Corporation. Instead of “getting the maximum refund you deserve” like the advertisements say, clients money was stolen from them. Something else Roni Deutch addresses in her ad is, “Can you live on half your paycheck? That’s how much the IRS can take when they garnish your wages.” This particular message addressed in the ad plays on the consumer’s fear of not being able to pay their taxes. This is what presses a lot of consumers to purchase products because the advertisement targets their fears and causes them to buy things that will hopefully take those fears away. This helps to prove that advertisements a lot of the time waste people’s money and are a waste of people’s time. In my own experience I have seen many examples where advertisements have been nothing but a hassle. Advertisements often arrive as an inconvenient audio and/or visual assault. Telemarketers call regularly, catchy commercials interrupt TV and pop-up computer ads grab my attention. I have clicked on a side pop-up or two claiming I could win one thing or another, and next thing I know there are a bunch of Spam advertisements appearing in my mailbox. Many like me only click it if the advertisements interest them, and just by being interested the Spam folder fills up and consumers can’t usually get what is advertised without some kind of catch anyways. Advertisements do pull our interest, but they aren’t always what they are cracked up to be. Advertisements do not only seem bad, but statistically their cons outweigh their pros. This includes in year 2009 when the company Apple spent half a billion dollars on advertising their products. (Elmer-Dewitt) Not only is the amount that individual companies spend on advertisements daunting, but the amount spent for advertisements geared towards children is absurd. In 2009 the United States spent $17 billion on advertising for children. (Young) When targeting the younger generation through advertisements they want a lot of the things shown to them through the ads, and becoming very materialistic in that way. These children are the future leaders of the economy and if they are being taught to spend money at a young age, our economy will only be worse than it is now. This occurs with both adults and children, but the long term affects of targeting children are much greater. Many others might say advertisements are a good thing for today’s society. They could have the argument that it stimulates the world’s economy by getting people to buy more things. Also that it portrays information in a different way, that way giving people a different way to learn about new products. These arguments may seem valid at first when just looking at the overview of advertisements, but when going deeper both of these arguments have many consequences that are irreversible. These irreversible consequences include materialistic habits, ongoing debt, and that consumers need to be like or have what is portrayed in the ads.
Advertisements are not only a negative influence on today’s society, but they drag society down. It is hurting and affecting all ages, and especially the younger generation in which the world relies on to make the world a better place. Also even though advertisements might seem intriguing when looked at, a lot of the time what they are selling is faulty and is not what the consumer sees in the original ad. Lastly advertisements are just plain annoying, and waste time and space. If a product or company is actually good, then sooner or later there will be reviews on its excellence and some word of mouth from those who have used and bought the product themselves. Everyone has their own opinions about advertisements, but with all the evidence to show I have to say that they are a negative influence on society.
